Spectrographic Analysis of Normal Human Tissue From Richmond, Virginia

Description: As a part of the Internal Dose Program, normal human tissues are analyzed spectrographically for approximately 40 minor and trace elements. This study is performed by the Health Physics Division and the Physics Department, University of Tennessee, under Subcontract 380. Because the amount of data is large, central files reports have been issued which include the data on all tissues received from a city. This is the sixth report in the series, and all tissues here reported upon were received fro… more

Reactor Automatic Control and Load Swing Test. Test Results DL-S-144 (T-554924). Section I. Second Performance

Description: The purpose of this test was to determine the controlling ability of the Reactor Power and Temperature Control System and to determine the operational characteristics of the station during load swings after change of operating conditions from 523 F, 2000 psi, to 500 F, 1800 psi. The Reactor Power and Temperature Control System satisfactorily controlled rod movements to maintain all primary plant parameters within their individual limits during steady state operation and during ramp function loa… more

Reactor Plant Container Air Cooling System. Section III. Second Performance. Test Results DL-S-136 (T-550090)

Description: The purpose of this test was to determine the performance of the Reactor Plant Container Air Cooling System with four reactor coolant loops at operating temperature. Due to the fact that the test was performed with the chamber door open, no significant conclusion can be arrived at concerning the efficiency of the Air Cool System. The 1B supply fan circulated approximately 20 per cent less air than the 1A fan during the test. Later investigation revealed that the turning vanes above the 1B dampe… more

Thermoelectric Properties of the Plasma Diode

Description: It is well known that thermionic emission into vacuum is accompanied by a Peltier cooling of the vacuum metal interface. The interface may be thought of as a junction between two conductors: the metal, and an electron gas whose distribution is determined primarily by space charge. The addition of a small amount of easily ionized gas to the vacuum region does not affect the Peltier cooling of the interface, but is does squeeze the space charge region to about one micron and replaces most of the … more

Analysis of UN Solutions for Na

Description: A comparison is presented of results obtained by flame-photometric procedure and spectrographic analysis of samples of UO3 dissolved in HNO3 with various known amounts of NaCl solution added. Results were calculated on the basis of parts per million of U. Results indicate flame-photometric procedures are probably satisfactory for analysis for Na but results obtained using the spectrograph were found low.

Phenomenological Theory of the Attenuation of Neutrons by Air Ducts in Shields

Description: Experiments on the attenuation of neutrons by air ducts in water can be understood on a simple phenomenological picture. First the attenuation of neutrons in a long thin straight section is shown to be a function of (1/l)2, where l is the length of the duct. These neutrons are primarily the uncollided neutrons which have traveled directly in air from one end of the duct to the other. Next the attenuation due to a duct which consists of two straight sections joined at an angle o is considered. F… more

A Study of Location Times for Positions Arranged on a Panel in a Random and an Ordered Manner

Description: The results of an experimental pilot study on the location time, for a sequence of N specified positions on a panel, are given for 1 <_ N <_ 30. The positions to be located were randomly arranged on one set of panels and arranged according to an ordering scheme on a second set of panels. Th location time for N positions randomly arranged on a panel varies approximately as N(2). In the case of an order arrangement the location time is essentially proportional to N. Even for as few as 30 position… more

Vapor Traps for Handling Liquid Sodium

Description: An active program is a present underway to develop equipment to handle liquid metals. Among the metals being studied are sodium and sodium--potassium alloy (the latter commonly referred to as NaK). In many of the systems being studied this liquid metal is pressurized by inert gas in the lines. At times it is necessary to bleed off some of this gas from the system. Although the gas is allowed to escape at a temperature at which the vapor pressure of sodium is extremely small, it has been found t… more

Studies on the Experimental Pathology and Biochemistry of the Pulmonary Granulomatosis of Beryllium Workers. Section II, Consolidated Progress Report. Supplement: a Review of the Physical Chemistry of Beryllium

Description: The status of research is reviewed in a study of pulmonary granulomatosis in beryllium workers. Equipment for use in dust exposure studies is described. Preliminary results are reported from studies on the tissue distribution and pathological effects of beryllium dust in rats; the physical chemistry of solutions of beryllium salts; the effects of beryllium on enzyme systems, and the effects of ascorbic acid on beryllium excretion.

Brief Review of Heat Transfer Problems Encountered in the Production of Magnetic Fields

Description: The design of internally cooled electrical coils for the production of high frequency intensity magnetic fields presents many new aspects and combinations of the familiar modes of heat transfer. However, the customary methodology appears to be sufficient for preliminary analysis and understanding of those problems. This methodology comprises the derivation of a qualitative, approximate equation expressing the relative performance of the various parts of a system, followed by an examination of … more

Design Criteria for a Pile Oscillator

Description: In the use of a reactor as a device to measure neutron cross sections, the pile oscillator is often employed because of its much higher sensitivity compared to that available in static reactivity measurements. The factor limiting the available in static reactivity measurements. The factor limiting the available sensitivity is the generation of random noise, which originates in the statistical nature of the chain reaction. In other words, the nuclear reactions which maintain the chain reaction d… more

Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report May 1959

Description: The measured diffusivity of uranyl nitrate in water at 25ºC was 0.7*10^e cm^2/sec with about 40% average deviation. A program was started to develop nonnuclear uses for depleted uranium. Two continuous DRUHM reaction tuns were terminate due to erratic operation of the sodium metering system. In the second Fluorox run with crude UF, which lasted for 29 hr, a total material balance of 94.8% was obtained and 17.9& of the theoretical amount of UF was collected in cold traps and chemical traps.

Comparison of Two Colorimetric Methods for Uranium

Description: In order to establish the feasibility of using two colorimetric methods for the determination of uranium interchangeably, according to the interferences encountered in a particular sample. Results were obtained by each of the methods and compared. The dibenzoyl methane method and the ethyl acetate-ammonium thiocyanate procedure were compared on the basis of values secured on the same day, on different days, on an analysis of the variance, and on an analysis of the residual error for the methods… more

Effects of Fuel Burn-Up on the Dissolution Process-I

Description: Data on the effects of nuclear fuel burnup on dissolution rates and U losses of a few fuel types are summarized. Burnup to the 40% level produced very little effect on the rate of solution of stainless steel-UO/sub 2/ fuel elements in solutions of the Darex type. Beyond passivation, burnup to the 250 Mwd/T level did not produce a large effect on the rate of decladding nor on the U losses in the Sulfex process. Burnup to the 15% or 4300 Mwd/T level produced little or no effect on the rate of dec… more

Analysis of Neutron Pulses in a Godiva-Type Reactor

Description: Some calculations have been made to estimate the characteristics of a neutron-burst type fast reactor similar to Godiva but made up of relatively small component parts--the so-called "layered assembly." One spherical and three cylindrical assemblies have been considered. Critical masses, assuming 5% voids, range from 58 to 65 kg of 93.4% enriched U/sup 235/. For a reactivity addition of 0.33 dollars above prompt critical bursts between 2 x 10/sup 17/ and 6.7 x 10/ sup 17/ fissions were computed… more
