Preliminary Leaching Tests for the Extraction of Uranium From Various Monticello Stockpile Ores

Description: In a section of the area occupied by the Atomic Energy Commission in Grand Junction, Colorado, a pilot plant is being erected to test a resin-in-pulp process. The process is based on the adsorption of uranium by resin from acid pulps. The first ores to be treated at this plant will be Monticello Stockpile Material. Samples of the various stockpiles sere subjected to a series of leaching, filtering and settling tests, the results of which are presented in this report.

Filters in P-10 production hoods

Description: This paper addresses the reported problem of insufficient air flow through the Fiberglas filters for the air inlets in P-10 production hoods. Since it appears that the replacement of the contemplated filters with either louvers or grilles will not impose any forseen difficulties and will definitely assist in the ventilation design, this substitution has been accepted. Air flow through the grilles or louvers is to be designed to attain a minimum lineal velocity of 200 fpm through the openings.

Report of initial urinalyses on Bio-Assay personnel for the evaluation of benzol exposures

Description: In November, 1949, an industrial hygiene study was made of the operations conducted in the Bio-Assay Laboratory, 706 Building, 700 Area. This study was conducted by W.E. Gill and reported in HW-15654. One of the potential health hazards investigated was the use of benzol in laboratory procedures. An evaluation of this problem where the solvent was employed for cleaning glassware indicated that the solvent vapor was present in the workers` breathing zone in concentrations occasionally as high as… more

Slug cocking and column bowing experiments

Description: A large number of ``hot spot`` slug failures characterized by intergranular corrosion of the aluminum can have occurred in the past year. The cause of this type of failure may be vertical displacement of one or more slugs in the slug columns. To determine if such displacement may reasonably be expected and to determine the cause and cure of the displacement a set of experiments have been performed in the 189-D laboratory. This document presents data which has been thus far collected. (1) Slugs … more

Analytical results on leachings from Nutsche Filters

Description: This report describes results of an investigation to determine whether plutonium nitrates and lanthanum compounds were being entrained on the filter aid and filter block of the Nutsche Filters in Cell 2 of Bldg. 231. Leach samples were analyzed for La, Pu, phosphate, fluoride, Pu{sup 240}, and Am. From the data the authors concluded that the holdup on the Nutsche Filter is due to insoluble plutonium compounds either filtered from solution, or more likely, formed on the filter. These compounds w… more

Accelerator Development Department Internal Report

Description: In this report we present solutions of the design problem in which a system of quadruple lenses is required to carry a particle beam from given focal lines in the x and y planes to other given focal lines. Particular attention will be given to the case of the anastigmatic lens system which takes a beam from one focal point to another focal point. Since the general problem is almost impossibly complicated a simplification is introduced by breaking the lens system into two parts. The first part o… more

Experimental results of an investigation of two methods of inflight thrust measurement applicable to afterburning turbojet engines with ejectors

Description: Report presenting an investigation in an altitude test chamber using a turbojet engine equipped with an afterburner and ejector to compare directly two techniques of determining thrust that are both applicable to flight installations. One method uses a swinging uncooled rake at the ejector outlet while the other requires extensive instrumentation to measure the momentum forces of systems and the force on the internal surface of the ejector nozzle. Results regarding the swinging-rake technique a… more

Pressure Rise in HRT Shield Due to Reactor and Replacement heat Exchanger Rupture

Description: .Recalculations were made of HRT cell pressures in the event of a simultaneous rupture of the reactor core vessel and the fuel and blanket heat exchangers. These calculations will be applicable after the replacement fuel heat exchanger is installed. The pressure rise in the cell is plotted as a function of time. A maximum cell pressure of 34 psig is achieved ~7 sec after rupture.

K Reactor graphite distortion data

Description: Recent observations and measurements of the K Reactor stacks have revealed that horizontal shifting of the graphite has occurred. This shifting has caused the stack sides to bow outward as much as three inches. In addition, gaps large enough to admit 3X balls have been observed between blocks in certain regions of the stack. The term ``distortion`` as used in this report refers to this horizontal shifting and the resulting formation of gaps. The vertical growth and contraction that have been ob… more

183 B-C cross tie justification and scope

Description: After the present solid slugs are replaced with the new I&E elements` in the 105-B reactor, the friction loss for the reactor cooling water will be decreased with a resulting opportunity for increase in flow through the reactor. The amount that this flow could be increased is limited by the capacity of the B water plant as well as the reactor itself. It is possible that there will be a shortage of filtered water at 183-B during the critical periods of each year. To overcome this possible shorta… more

Cloud-droplet ingestion in engine inlets with inlet velocity ratios of 1.0 and 0.7

Description: From Summary: "The paths of cloud droplets into two engine inlets have been calculated for a wide range of meteorological and flight conditions. The amount of water in droplet form ingested by the inlets and the amount and distribution of water impinging on the inlet walls are obtained from these droplet-trajectory calculations. In both types of inlet, a prolate ellipsoid of revolution represents either part or all of the forebody at the center of an annular inlet to an engine. The configuratio… more

The Solubility of Tributyl Phosphate in Aqueous Solutions

Description: Report describing a study regarding the solubility and related properties of tributyl phosphate (TBP), which has lower solubility in water than most uranium solvents. Pure TBP and TBP in an inert diluent were tested for solubility in water, several nitric acid solutions of varying concentrations, and other solutions typical of process streams. For TBP-diluent-water system tests, equilibrium water content in organic phase was found.
