Seaplanes for Commerce

Description: The advantages of using seaplanes for commercial purposes is discussed. The three primary advantages described include their superior speeds over existing means of transport on the same routes, the available landing fields when flying over the water, and the reduction of distance from the airport to the city is serves due to the seaplane's ability to land in water.

The Law Relating to Air Currents

Description: In the subdivided wing section profile, the diagram of the current is entirely changed and the harmful formation of eddies is avoided through premature deflection. Pressure equalization does not occur between the upper and under sides. This report presents a discussion of the various laws relating to wing design with the conclusion being that lift increases with more acute angles of attack.

Abacus Giving the Variation of the Mean Pressure of an Aviation Engine as a Function of its Speed of Rotation

Description: Comparing the results of the calculations for computing the mean pressure of an aviation engine for any number of revolutions, with those of experiment, the writer, by numerous examples, shows the perfect agreement between them. This report will show that, by means of a special abacus, an engineer can instantly plot the characteristics of an engine.

The influence of inlet air temperature and jacket water temperature on initiating combustion in a high speed compression ignition engine

Description: Report presenting some tests to determine the influence on initiating combustion in a one-cylinder compression ignition engine of inlet air temperature and jacket water temperature. The results show that the engine is very sensitive to changes in final compression pressure, induced by a change in the initial compression pressure, and that some way of providing compensating means for conditions that tend to lower section pressure is necessary.

Calculation of Wing Spars of Variable Cross-Section and Linear Load

Description: "The calculation of wing spars of constant cross-section and load has been thoroughly treated by a large number of authors. Such is not the case, however, regarding the calculation of wing spars whose section and linear load diminish toward the ends, as in wings of trapezoidal contour and decreasing section" (p. 1).

Preliminary investigation of the effect of a rotating cylinder in a wing

Description: Into the leading edge of a wing with arbitrary cross-section, there is introduced a cylinder, which can be rotated by an electric motor by means of a cord. Observations were made in the wind tunnel on how the lift at different wind velocities was affected by rotating this cylinder.

A Few More Mechanical-Flight Formulas Without the Aid of Polar Diagrams

Description: The reliability of the assumption of a parabolic shape of the polar curve is investigated and found satisfactory for all practical purposes. It is further shown that the aerodynamically best possible or "ideal" airplane is produced on this assumption. Lastly, detailed suggestions are given on the possibilities of application of this method of calculation. It especially simplifies the design and evaluation of structural changes and the determination of the limits of technical possibilities. The present report deals only with the relations of the airfoils. The mutual action of the airfoils, engine and propeller will be treated in a subsequent report.

Spontaneous Combustion of Hydrogen

Description: It is shown by the author's experiments that hydrogen which escapes to the atmosphere through openings in the system may burn spontaneously if it contains dust. Purely thermal reasoning can not account for the combustion. It seems to be rather an electrical ignition. In order to determine whether the cause of the spontaneous ignition was thermo-chemical, thermo-mechanical, or thermo-electrical, the experiments in this paper were performed.
