1. K+ Charge Exchange - Search For K+ Charge Exchange

Description: An experiment was designed utilizing a charge-exchange reaction to study the decay and interactions of the neutral K mesons produced. The experiment produced no events that could be interpreted as either the decay or interaction of neutral K mesons. The nature of the experiment and the possible explanations of this unexpected result are presented in this paper.

A Regulated Power Supply for a High Current Magnet

Description: Current regulation of a Bitter type electromagnet powered by a 10 kw. motor-generator set has been achieved by control of the generator exciting field. An error signal, obtained by comparing the voltage drop across a series resistor in the magnet circuit with a reference voltage, is fed back with appropriate amplification to the grids of series tubes in the generator field supply. Magnetic fields from 400 gauss to 10 kilogauss in a fixed gap (1.5 in. width and 3.5 in. diameter) are obtainable w… more

The Operation and Maintenance of an Alpha Energy Analyzing System

Description: The measurement of a alpha-particle energy has been used by many radiochemical laboratories for the identification and analysis of alpha-active radio nuclides. The use of the total-ionization method for alpha-active radio-nuclides. The use of the total-ionization method for alpha energy in ionization chamber in which the alpha particle loses all its energy in ionization of the chamber gas. Collection of the electrons thus formed generates a voltage pulse across the chamber capacity which is pro… more

A Remote Phase Separation Bulb for Highly Radioactive Sample Analyses

Description: Extraction systems involving chelating agents are widely used in radiochemical separations on a control basis due to the economy in time and equipment. In the case of waste streams, the element of interest is, by definition, at a very low concentration in the presence of gross fission product activities. The resultant large sample size necessary for a reliable analytical results creates a marked radiation hazard to laboratory personnel.

Zirconium Diboride, Boron Nitride, And Boron Carbide Compatibility with Austenitic Stainless Steel

Description: The compatibility of zirconium diboride, boron carbide, and boron nitride with type 304 stainless steel was evaluated as a function of temperature (1000-1200°C), time (1-3 hr). Appropriate loadings of the boron compounds and stainless steel powder were blended and fashioned into a compact powder metallurgically. Each compact was roll clad into a plate and subsequently heat treated at a temperature equal to the initial sintering temperature. Metallographic examination of the fabricated and heat-… more

Eurochemic Assistance Program: Comments by FMPC, dated July 6, 1959, on Eurochemic Technical Documents

Description: The nuclear safety portion of this report is inclined to ignore the factors by which safety limits can be increased. It makes no mention of the control that can be exercised by limiting the assay of the U-235 being processed in the plant. From some of the previous reports, it is apparent that this plant is not anticipating processing U-235 of assay greater than approximately 20%. At this value, many of the numbers that are presented in the tables could be increased markedly. Rough examination i… more
