Plan for the Future of Neutron Research on Condensed Matter : An Argonne National Laboratory Report Prepared in Response to the "Report of the Review Panel on Neutron Scattering"

Description: The Review Panel on Neutron Scattering has recommended an expanded budget to allow systematic development of the field. An alternative plan for the future of neutron research on condensed matter is presented here, in case it is not possible to fund the expanded budget. This plan leads, in a rational and logical way, to a world-class neutron source that will ensure the vitality of the field and exploit the many benefits that state-of-the-art neutron facilities can bring to programs in the materi… more

Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report September 1960

Description: Measurements of the interfacial tension between water and tributyl phosphate solutions were made for application to the analysis of Marengoni effect in solvent extraction. A 24 hr flame calcination run to product Th02 particles yielded 40% as product and 54% collected from the furnace walls and from a coarse particle trap. The elution rates of uranyl ion from Dowex 21K using sodium nitrate could be approximated by assuming apparent diffusion coefficients of 1.67 x 10^-7 and 1.18 x 10 ^-7 cm^2/s… more

Injection of Electrons into the Astron Reactor

Description: "The injection of the E-layer electrons into the Astron reactor is described by following the electrons as they emerge from the anode of the 1-Mev electron gun through the various steps up to their injection in the reactor volume. Several problems are imposed by this injection process and their solutions are discussed briefly. The detailed mathematical theory and calculations will be presented in a separate paper now in preparation."

Preliminary investigation of an annular turbojet combustor having a catalytic-coated liner

Description: From Summary: "The performance of an experimental annular turbojet combustor was investigated at a low-pressure operating condition with an uncoated liner, with an identical liner having a ceramic coating on the inner walls, and with this same liner having a catalytic coating added onto the ceramic coating. The combustion efficiency was approximately the same for all three liners, thus indicating no gain in performance through the use of the catalytic coating."

An experimental investigation of the applicability of the hypersonic similarity law to bodies of revolution

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the hypersonic similarity law for steady flow about bodies of revolution by correlating the forces and moments from tests at a range of Mach numbers and angles of attack. The data for the lifting cones and ogives are correlated by the hypersonic similarity law. Results regarding the similitude for lift and pitching moment and similitude for drag are provided.

Reflection of a Weak Shock Wave From a Boundary Layer Along a Flat Plate 1: Interaction of Weak Shock Waves With Laminar and Turbulent Boundary Layers Analyzed by Momentum-Integral Method

Description: Note presenting an investigation of the phenomena encountered when a plane oblique shock wave is incident upon the boundary layer of a flat plate. The flow field was divided into a viscous layer near the wall and a supersonic potential outer flow. With the outer flow determined, boundary-layer growth and pressure distribution were computed and results for the laminar cases were obtained and provided.

Alkyl Phosphoric Acids as Extraction Agents for Uranium

Description: The recent interest in tributyl phosphate as an extracting solvent for uranium indicated that consideration of n-butyl phosphoric acid for this application might be of interest if some way could be devised to overcome the manipulation and miscibility difficulties. It was found that if the material was placed in any one of a number of carrier solvents, it had a remarkably strong extractive effect on uranyl ion out of acid solutions without a salting agent present.

The Separation of Trace Amounts of Radioactive Cs From Macro Quanitites of Sodium and Potassium Salts

Description: Summary: A method for the separation of cesium from macro quantities of sodium and potassium using an ion exchange resin, Dowex 50, has been developed. A 95% recovery of cesium with a reduction of the solid content of 95% was found possible. Curves illustrating the effect of acidity, column length, and flow rate are presented in the report. The sodium form, hydrogen form and ammonium form of Dowex 50 were investigated; the hydrogen form was found to give the best separation.

Description: From Summary: "Flight tests of a P-51H airplane with two different vertical-tail assemblies were made to determine lateral and directional stability and control characteristics. The airplane had satisfactory directional stability in the landing, approach, and wave-off conditions with either tail. In the power-on clean and glide conditions, however, the airplane had weak directional stability with the original tail. The production tail, which had a 7-inch fin extension and a shorter span rudder,… more
