Brief Review of Heat Transfer Problems Encountered in the Production of Magnetic Fields

Description: The design of internally cooled electrical coils for the production of high frequency intensity magnetic fields presents many new aspects and combinations of the familiar modes of heat transfer. However, the customary methodology appears to be sufficient for preliminary analysis and understanding of those problems. This methodology comprises the derivation of a qualitative, approximate equation expressing the relative performance of the various parts of a system, followed by an examination of … more

A Study of the Motion and Aerodynamic Heating of Missiles Entering the Earth's Atmosphere at High Supersonic Speeds

Description: From Summary: "A simplified analysis is made of the velocity and deceleration history of missiles entering the earth's atmosphere at high supersonic speeds. It is found that, in general, the gravity force is negligible compared to the aerodynamic drag force and, hence, that the trajectory is essentially a straight line. A constant drag coefficient and an exponential variation of density with altitude are assumed and generalized curves for the variation of missile speed and deceleration with alt… more

The [Sigma/Alpha] Branching Ratio Of [Y*1]

Description: Recently a T=1 resonance in the [Alpha w] system called [Y*1] has been observed with a mass of 1385 Mev. Two types of resonances have been predicted that might relate this observation to other elementary-particle interactions: (1) P 3/2 resonances in the Alpha w and Sigma w systems predicted by global symmetry corresponding to the (3/2, 3/2) resonance of the wN system, (2) a spin-1/2 Y-w resonance resulting from a bound state in the KN system. The position and width of the observed [Y*1] resona… more

An Isochronal Differential Microcalorimeter

Description: An isochronal differential-type microcalorimeter has been designed and constructed. As a result of its simple design it is very easy to handle the samples and assemble the calorimeter. Important to the operation of the calorimeter is a program, also working on the differential principle, that provides linear temperature rise of the samples. This calorimeter is used to measure very small energy releases such as those found in precipitation, stored energy, etc. It is demonstrated that the calorim… more

Bromine Exchange in Graphite-Bromine Lamellar Compounds

Description: A kinetic study of the exchange of normal and radioactive bromine in graphite-bromine lamellar compounds has been made at temperatures of 30° to 50°C. Natural and synthetic graphite powders were investigated. Two alternative mechanisms for the exchange, volume diffusion and surface exchange, were considered. The data were in better agreement with the diffusion mechanism. Diffusion coefficients of 10 -9 to 10 -8 cm2/sec and an activation energy of 11 to 14 kcal/mole were calculated for the natur… more

N. S. Savannah Fuel Design and Development Program: Fuel Rod Vibration (Preliminary Report)

Description: This is a preliminary report on the investigation of the N.S. Savannah replacement fuel rod vibration amplitude when excited by water flowing parallel to the axis of the fuel rod. Methods of calculating the fuel rod frequency in air were verified by experiment. Work is continuing to establish the validity of methods of calculating natural frequencies in water and to confirm the correlation of flow induced vibration amplitude found in reference (1).

Pumping capacities of over 400 gpm and efficiencies of over 50 percent were obtained. NaK alloy at temperatures up to 400 C was used in the test. The large currents required were obtained from rectifiers or from a homopolar generator constructed for the purpose."
