Mass Balance Results for Pricetown I Underground Coal Gasification

Description: A mass balance model was applied to the Pricetown I test data. This model gave the values of various parameters such as water influx, percent devolatilization, percent gasification, amount of coal affected, thermal efficiency, etc., for the various phases of the test. Both hourly and daily values of the test data were used. At certain times, there was air loss to the coal seam or air gain from the coal seam as related to the underground reactor. Mass balances are modified accordingly. Realistic… more

Development of methods of producing large areas of silicon sheet by the slicing of silicon ingots using inside diameter (ID) saws. First quarterly report

Description: An STC 16 inch automated ID slicing machine (Model SMA-4401) is being used for this effort. The saw has been modified to accept an STC Programmable Electric Feed System, STC Crystal Rotating System and an STC Dyna-Track Blade Monitoring and Control System. The saw and accessories will be used to slice 100 mm diameter single crystal silicon ingots while rotating them. The automated saw will automatically recover the wafers and load them into a cassette. The amount of material lost during slicing… more

Direct determination of radiation damage profiles in the order-disorder alloys Ni/sub 4/Mo and Pt/sub 3/Co irradiated with 500 to 2500 eV Ne/sup +/ ions

Description: Radiation damage produced in the order-disorder alloys Ni/sub 4/Mo and Pt/sub 3/Co by low-energy (500-2500 eV) Ne/sup +/ ions has been observed directly, on an atomic scale, employing the field-ion microscope (FIM) technique. A new approach was developed to determine the radiation damage distribution in these alloys. In the case of the alloy Ni/sub 4/Mo the measurements were based on the contrast differences between the FIM images of an ordered alloy, which were completely regular, and a disord… more

Seismological investigation of crack formation in hydraulic rock fracturing experiments and in natural geothermal environments. Progress report, September 1, 1978-August 31, 1979

Description: An interpretation theory based on the fluid-filled crack model of geothermal systems is being developed and tested against a variety of data from various geothermal areas. Progress is reported on the following subjects: (1) analysis and interpretation of seismic data obtained from the bore holes at the LASL Hot Dry Rock geothermal site. (2) Collection, analysis and interpretation of data on deep volcanic tremors at the USGS Hawaii Volcano Observatory. (3) Development of a new method for determi… more

Environmental Control Technology for Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide. Final Report

Description: The impact of fossil fuel use in the United States on worldwide CO/sub 2/ emissions and the impact of increased coal utilization on CO/sub 2/ emission rates are assessed. The aspects of CO/sub 2/ control are discussed as well as the available CO/sub 2/ control points (CO/sub 2/ removal sites). The primary factor affecting the practicability of a CO/sub 2/ control system is the energy required by the control system. Of the three potential CO/sub 2/ control points, removal from the stacks of foss… more

Polarized proton-neutron total cross sections from proton-deuteron data

Description: Simple expressions are derived for the polarized proton-deuteron total cross sections. Possibilities of extraction of the polarized proton-neutron cross sections from the proton-deuteron data are discussed. 19 references.

Introduction to two-temperature equations of state

Description: A brief introduction to two-temperature equations of state is presented. Current capabilities of T-4 in this area as well as plans for future development are discussed. In addition, we point out various conceptual and practical difficulties in implementing a two-temperature approximation.

Temporal aspects of tumorigenic response to individual and mixed carcinogens. Progress report, October 1, 1978-September 30, 1979

Description: The research proposed here is designed to obtain a better understanding of the temporal kinetics of tumor induction when one or more carcinogens are present simultaneously or sequentially for prolonged periods of time. Studies done to date under this contract have shown that carcinogenesis in mouse skin by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon carcinogens is consistent with the induction of dependent and autonomous cell transformations by the carcinogen followed by the conversion of autonomous tumor … more

Production of sugarcane and tropical grasses as a renewable energy source. Second quarterly report; year 2, 1978-1979

Description: Research centered on greenhouse screening of candidate grasses coupled with field-plot studies on varieties, optimal nitrogen and seeding rates, variable row spacing, and frequency of harvest. Candidate grasses were identified for short-rotation crops having potentially greater versatility than Sordan 70A (earlier maturatoon greater tolerance to moisture stress). Field-plot studies were performed on the optimization of N-fertilization and seeding rates for Sordan 70A. Field-plot data were recor… more

Coal feeder survey for Illinois coal gasification group. [Lockhopper, Fuller Kinyon screw, Foster Miller pocket feeder]

Description: An evaluation of three coal feeder concepts (lockhopper, Fuller Kinyon screw and Foster Miller pocket feeder) for use in the ICGG first stage gasifier was made. For the sake of consistency, all feed concepts were evaluated on the same basis, that is, feeding a nominal 100 Tons per hour (TPH) against a back pressure of 50 psig. Also, all feed systems were assumed to have similar atmospheric storage hoppers and final injection systems. Accordingly, no further consideration of these support system… more

Equipment for collecting sludge samples from Savannah River Plant waste tanks

Description: A sampler was developed to take 25-L samples of sludge from Savannah River Plant waste tanks. The cylindrical sample vessel has a retractable nose section. Sludge enters an annular space at the nose section as the sampler is forced through the sludge layer with rigid drive pipes. Two samples have been taken and transported in a special cask to a waste processing research facility at the Savannah River Laboratory. 7 figures.

Nondestructive fissile isotopic measurement technique for /sup 233/U--/sup 235/U fuels using prompt and delayed fission--neutron counting

Description: Assay and analysis procedures were developed for nondestructive fissile isotopic measurement of mixed /sup 233/U--/sup 235/U fuel samples. For /sup 233/U much fewer delayed neutrons are released per fission than for /sup 235/U, although the number of prompt neutrons is approximately the same. By separately counting prompt and delayed neutrons released by a sample exposed to neutron irradiation, the amounts of /sup 233/U and /sup 235/U present in the sample can be estimated. Equations of delayed… more
