Growth of molten core debris pools in concrete. Part II. A. Pool growth in composite beds; B. Effect of overlaying steel layers. Final report, March 1, 1978-September 30, 1979. [LMFBR]

Description: The heat and mass transfer processes taking place in molten core debris/concrete systems have been experimentally investigated. Two types of experiments have been conducted. The first experiment simulates the growth of a molten debris pool in a composite sacrificial bed. This experiment models debris pool growth in an inner, low-melting point, sacrificial material zone followed by a melting attack on the concrete bed. The purpose of the inner zone is to quickly melt and dilute the debris pool s… more

Use of a General Nonlinear Least-Squares Curve Fitting Program With Nonclosed Form Relationships. [GNLS, in FORTRAN for CDC Computers]

Description: A use for GNLS, a general nonlinear least-squares curve fitting program, is presented. In this use GNLS determines a set of best parameters for relationships that cannot be written in closed form. This program can be useful for experimenters who need to determine experimental parameters by fitting nonclosed-form relationships to experimental data. Two examples are given to indicate how GNLS can be used for this type of problem. 11 figures.

Development of a plasma retropulse shutter for Shiva and Nova

Description: A plasma shutter is being developed for a Nd:glass laser fusion system which, at an output spatial filter pinhole, produces a plasma of 10/sup 21/ cm/sup -3/ to block target-reflected light from reentering the laser. A pulser using low-inductance capacitors and elastomer dielectric is switched with uv preilluminated railgaps to resistively heat a wire producing a plasma. The plasma generated within a nozzle and configured in a railgun geometry is projected across the optical beam path at 3.9 cm… more

Feasibility study for a low-head hydroelectric installation at Archusa Creek Dam. Final report to the Pat Harrison Waterway District

Description: The rising cost, uncertain future supply, and environmental problems associated with energy sources have resulted in serious investigation of energy sources that have not previously been considered economically and technically feasible. One such source involves low-head hydroelectric generation. The Department of Energy has funded several feasibility studies for the installation of hydroelectric generators at existing low-head dams. Such a feasibility study for the Archusa Creek Dam near Quitma… more

Seismic safety in nuclear-waste disposal

Description: Seismic safety is one of the factors that must be considered in the disposal of nuclear waste in deep geologic media. This report reviews the data on damage to underground equipment and structures from earthquakes, the record of associated motions, and the conventional methods of seismic safety-analysis and engineering. Safety considerations may be divided into two classes: those during the operational life of a disposal facility, and those pertinent to the post-decommissioning life of the faci… more

Analysis of a flow metering device for low-quality steam-water flows. Final report

Description: The goal of this project is to investigate the potential of the meter configuration consisting of a sharp-edged contraction section followed by an extended length of constant area duct and finally a diffuser section for pressure recovery. This and two other configurations were tested. These configurations and the reasons underlying their selection are described and discussed. It is concluded that Murdock's correlation for steam/water flow through orifices and sudden contraction sections at low … more

Stress analysis of the retaining stud for the ECC rake

Description: A stress analysis of the retaining stud on the ECC Rake has been completed. The analysis considered thermal and mechanical loads that the stud is subjected to during a LOCE. The stud was analyzed to the requirement of Subsection NF of the (1977) ASME Code, Ref. 2. The stud was found to be structurally adequate.

Inference about population attributable risk from cross-sectional studies

Description: The population attributable risk (PAR) is defined as the fraction of all cases of a disease in a population due to exposure to a given risk factor. The data collected in cross-sectional surveys are used to test a formula of standard error of PAR from which a 95% confidence interval for PAR may be deduced.

Imperial Valley environmental project: baseline air quality and meteorological data

Description: The baseline air quality and meteorological data are gathered by the Imperial Valley Environmental Project from December 1976 through April 1978. The air quality data obtained at the six fixed locations are reported in the form of histograms; histograms and wind roses are presented of the meteorological data collected at the six sites. The air quality and meteorological data obtained by the mobile laboratory in the vicinity of the Heber KGRA are listed in a similar format. (MHR)

Fluid inclusions in salt: an annotated bibliography

Description: An annotated bibliography is presented which was compiled while searching the literature for information on fluid inclusions in salt for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's study on the deep-geologic disposal of nuclear waste. The migration of fluid inclusions in a thermal gradient is a potential hazard to the safe disposal of nuclear waste in a salt repository. At the present time, a prediction as to whether this hazard precludes the use of salt for waste disposal can not be made. Limited data… more

Spherical wave propagation in elastic media and its application to energy coupling for tamped and decoupled explosions

Description: The effects of variation in source and medium properties upon near- and far-field spectra for elastic waves are examined theoretically by considering spherical wave propagation in unbounded elastic media. This type of analysis, although idealized, provides insight into the relative effects of the various source and medium parameters on both tamped and decoupled explosions. It also provides a basis for interpreting both field and laboratory experimental data obtained during spherical wave propag… more
