DENSJT: statistical shell-model level density computer code description and user's manual. [In FORTRAN for CDC Cyber-70 computer]

Description: The FORTRAN code DENSJT described here is constructed to calculate the appropriate moments and dimensions needed in describing the Gaussian level density for fixed values of the total angular momentum (J) and isobaric spin (T = T/sub 0/). The input for this code is the same as in the usual shell-model codes, namely, the single-particle orbital properties and the antisymmetric two-body matrix elements. To calculate the moments for fixed values of the angular momentum (J) a method described by Gi… more

Evaluation of environmental data relating to selected nuclear power plant sites: the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Site

Description: Environmental monitoring data for the years 1973 and 1974 pertaining to the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Unit 1, which began operation in early 1974, were analyzed by the most practical qualitative and quantitative methods. Terrestrial biotic resources were considered for this plant. The effects of the operation of Unit 1 on the local terrestrial organisms were found to be undetectable. Although the plant has not operated long enough to reveal long-term deleterious effects, the present ind… more

Confinement of airborne radioactivity. Progress report: January--December 1976

Description: Service aging studies conducted at the Savannah River Laboratory (SRL) show that Type GX-176 carbon has a useful life of at least 30 months as a halogen absorbent in the airborne-activity confinement system for the Savannah River production reactors. The studies also show that elemental iodine retention by this carbon at high temperature (180/sup 0/C) is more a function of the pH of the service-aged carbon than of the length of time in service. Type GX-176 carbon is a 10 x 16 mesh coconut shell… more

Laser fusion hybrid reactor systems study

Description: The work was performed in three phases. The first phase included a review of the many possible laser-reactor-blanket combinations and resulted in the selection of a ''demonstration size'' 500 MWe plant for further study. A number of fast fission blankets using uranium metal, uranium-molybdenum alloy, and uranium carbide as fuel were investigated. The second phase included design of the reactor vessel and internals, heat transfer system, tritium processing system, and the balance of plant, exclu… more

Stability of trapped-particle modes in lower-hybrid pump

Description: The stability of dissipative trapped-particle modes in the presence of a self-consistent lower-hybrid pump is analyzed theoretically. The pump can either be a single coherent wave or a spectrum of turbulent waves. Corresponding dispersion relations modified by the pump are derived and conditions for excitation and suppression of the modes are also discussed.

Comprehensive examination of silicone membrane materials from W68. Period covered: January--March 1976. Normal process development endeavor No. 223

Description: Proper performance of the W68 depends, among other factors, upon a functional silicone membrane. It is known that the LX-09 releases deleterious products which may be incompatible with other components of the system. If the chemistry of decomposition of the membranes can be clearly elucidated, preventive measures may be taken in system construction to optimize shelf lives of the units. Therefore, a project was initiated to examine this decomposition. Initially, several key tests were performed.… more

Observation of the forbidden magnetic dipole transition 6/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/. -->. 7/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ in atomic thallium. [Interference, M1 and E1 amplitudes, polarization, fluorescence, hyperfine structure]

Description: A measurement of the 6/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ ..-->.. 7/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ forbidden magnetic dipole matrix element in atomic thallium is described. A pulsed, linearly polarized dye laser tuned to the transition frequency is used to excite the thallium vapor from the 6/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ ground state to the 7/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ excited state. Interference between the magnetic dipole M1 amplitude and a static electric field induced E1 amplitude results in an atomic polarization of the 7/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ sta… more

Some effects of magnetic walls on the transverse motion of an intense beam of charged particles

Description: The focusing properties of a magnetic medium surrounding a beam of relativistic particles were examined. The magnitude of the magnetic forces generated by the wall is proportional to the beam current. For a current of the order of 10 kA, significant magnetic field gradients are obtained. It was concluded that the series of structures studied is not satisfactory for providing focusing of an intense beam of particles. However, the characteristics of the transverse forces suggest a method of const… more

Tritium effluent control project progress report, July--September 1975. [Tritiated liquid waste decontamination by molecular excitation, electrolysis of high-level tritiated water, and catalytic exchange detritiation studies]

Description: In the Tritiated Liquid Waste Decontamination (Molecular Excitation) program, it was found that a 1/4'' Nd:YAG amplifier and a Faraday rotator isolator must be added to the oscillator to obtain the required power for the laser excitation experiments. The isotopic selectivity of the two-photon dissociation process was examined in more detail. The selectivity or ratio of HTO to H/sub 2/O molecules that are photodissociated was found to be on the order of 25, which is inadequate for application to… more

Coalescence instability of magnetic islands

Description: The stability of a periodic magnetic island structure was studied using the ideal MHD equations. An instability is found which describes the tendency toward coalescence of parallel currents in the neighboring islands. It is expected that this instability will proceed at a fast MHD rate as long as the forces driving the instability can overcome the stabilizing forces due to the compression of the magnetic field between the islands. Beyond that phase, resistivity is expected to dominate the tende… more
