2D radiative transfer schemes

Description: In a study of three 2D radiative transfer methods, equilibrium diffusion, nonequilibrium diffusion, and S/sub n/, as applied to the interaction of the reflected shock with a fireball near the surface, the following results were obtained. The equilibrium diffusion method requires modifications to transfer energy through optically thin zones. The present S/sub n/ method, as included in YAQUI-SN, i.e., the TWOTRAN code, has troubles in the treatment of a thick/thin interface. Improvements are poss… more

Acoustically induced vibration of circular cylindrical rods. [LMFBR]

Description: An analysis is presented for the steady-state response of a circular cylindrical rod subjected to a plane wave; rod displacement natural frequency including fluid inertia effect, and radiation damping, are obtained in closed form. It is shown that the added mass coefficient depends only on the nondimensional wave number ..cap alpha.. and the radiation damping zeta/sub r/ depends on ..cap alpha.. and mass ratio ..beta... The rod displacement is proportional to wave amplitude and rod radius, and … more

Analysis of the reliability of the shutdown heat removal system for the CRBR

Description: An analysis of the reliability of the Shutdown Heat Removal System (SHRS) for the Clinch River Breeder Reactor (CRBR) was performed using Markov analysis models. Seven initiating events were considered. The system description and the failure and repair data were based on the Preliminary Safety Analysis Report of the CRBR. The study identified several areas to which the reliability of the SHRS is sensitive. To achieve high reliability shutdown heat removal, improvements in these areas or verific… more

Application of robust/resistant techniques to crystal structure refinement

Description: The least squares technique commonly used for refining crystal structures is neither robust (min variance with errors in experimental data) nor resistant (not highly dependent on any small subset of data). Other methods of fitting are being developed which are more robust/resistant, and this paper endeavors to apply these methods to crystal structure refinement. The Tukey biweight W-function succeeds in minimizing the influence of poor data. (DLC)

Beam lead device temperature testing

Description: The ability to perform 100-percent electrical probe testing of beam lead devices (BLD) at temperatures from 0 to 50/sup 0/C was developed. Correlation of probe test results to bonded sample test results from --55 to 100/sup 0/C was established for some parameters on transistors, diodes, and Zener diodes. The tests performed on transistors included collector-to-emitter leakage, collector-to-base leakage, current gain, and collector-emitter saturation voltages. Reverse leakage current tests were … more

Behavior of tributyl phosphate in A-line processes

Description: The chemical and physical properties of uranyl nitrate--tributyl phosphate adduct (UO/sub 2/) (NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/(TBP)/sub 2/ were studied to define optimum, safe operating conditions for denitration of uranyl nitrate (UN) solutions containing low concentrations of adduct. The distribution of TBP between aqueous UN solutions and organic phases (TBP pure or diluted in n-paraffin) was measured. Specific gravity measurements confirmed published data for aqueous UN solutions, but disagreed with lite… more

Borehole plugging by compaction process. Final report

Description: The requirements of an overall program to preserve the integrity of a repository formation are documented. The repository is intended to be in stable earth stratum used as a safe and permanent storage area for nuclear waste material. These wastes represent an environmental hazard for a period of up to 200,000 years. An engineering analysis, a reliability and quality-assurance program, and a development program for borehole plugging by compaction process, using natural earthen materials, are pre… more

Burrs produced by drilling

Description: Component parts of small precision mechanisms typically require nearly sharp edges to assure reliable operation. A burr-free condition also is needed to minimize a possible jamming of the mechanism because of burrs breaking loose. Small burrs are easily removed by many deburring processes. Increasing the feedrate resulted in longer exit burrs from 303Se stainless steel and 1018 steel. Drill geometry, workpiece materials, and workpiece thickness also affected the exit-burr length. Radial-lip dri… more

Burrs produced by grinding

Description: An investigation was conducted to determine the influence of variables in controlling the size and repeatability of grinding burrs to minimize burr-removal costs and improve the quality and reliability of parts for small precision mechanisms. Each of the three types of burrs produced by surface-grinding a rectangular block responds differently to changes in cutting conditions. Reducing the downfeed rate generally produces shorter burrs. Although the size of the abrasive grain affected the thick… more

Calculated pressure-broadened linewidths of H/sub 2/S

Description: Self-broadened and foreign-gas (N/sub 2/ and O/sub 2/) broadened linewidths of H/sub 2/S at 300/sup 0/K for a wide range of quantum numbers J and K/sub a/, for both type A and type B bands, have been calculated using the Anderson-Tsao-Curnutte theory of line broadening. In the case of H/sub 2/S-H/sub 2/S collisions, dipole-dipole, dipole-quadrupole, quadrupole-dipole, and quadrupole-quadrupole interactions have been included. For H/sub 2/S-N/sub 2/ and H/sub 2/S-O/sub 2/ collisions, dipole-quad… more

Calculation of isotopic mass and energy production by a matrix operator method. [Volterra method of the multiplicative integral]

Description: The Volterra method of the multiplicative integral is used to determine the isotopic density, mass, and energy production in linear systems. The solution method, assumptions, and limitations are discussed. The method allows a rapid accurate calculation of the change in isotopic density, mass, and energy production independent of the magnitude of the time steps, production or decay rates, or flux levels.

Casting warpage study

Description: Because of a need to reduce warpage in investment castings, and because of reported success in the use of aqueous polyalkylene glycol solutions for reducing warpage in heat-treated sheet-metal parts, particularly for aluminum alloys, an experiment was designed to include these solutions along with polyethylene glycol solutions in a study of quenching parameters. At the time of the study, the cost of polyethylene glycol was approximately one-third that of polyalkylene glycol. A total of 1032 cas… more

Chromatographic determination of the relative retention of isotopic species of oxygen in methanol and methan-d/sup 3/-ol

Description: A high-precision gas chromatograph was used in conjunction with a quadrupole mass filter and an on-line computer to study the fractionation of oxygen isotopes by Porapak T and glycerol in CH/sub 3/OH and CD/sub 3/OH as a function of temperature. Values of relative retention on the order of 1.002 compared favorably with results for the vapor pressure ratio obtained by classical means. Differences from unity were much smaller for the activity-coefficient ratio than for the vapor-pressure ratio. D… more
