Survey of Piledriver results and preliminary interpretation of three postshot cores in and near the cavity

Description: A summary of measured data collected by numerous agencies cooperating in the Piledriver event, is presented together with calculations based on empirical relations deduced from past events in comparable media. Of 9 relations that have been proposed to predict cavity radius, 5 result in radii accurate to <3.5%. The remainder are off by about 10 to 18%. Three postshot recovered cores (U-15.01 PS-1, -2, -3) were examined on a gross scale prior to extensive detailed sampling for laboratory tests. The positions of injected glass seams, radioactivity, and shear zones were recorded. The orientation of several thousand core fractures was measured with respect to the core axes and distance from the shot point. Taking all observations into account, phenomena related to failure of rock is the Piledriver event are closely related to pre-existing weaknesses and inhomogeneities. (Longer abstract available)

Creep Behavior of Refractory Alloys in Ultrahigh Vacuum.

Description: Several Cb, Ta, Mo, and W base alloys have been creep tested with both constant and continuously increasing loads in a vacuum environment of < 1x10$sup -8$ torr at temperatures and stresses chosen to provide between 1/2 and 1 percent creep in times up to 20,000 hours. Isostatic design data are presented in the form of a Larson-Miller plot 1/2 or 1 percent creep life for each of these refractory alloys. Elevated temperature tension test data from he tantalum base alloy T-111 showed a strain aging reaction in the 1400° to 2200°F (760° to 1204°C) range which produced an unusual transient creep behavior. Analysis of the isostatic steady state creep data for this material showed that the minimum creep rate can be described by the expression.

Core Periphery Model, Test 64DT-211. Final Report
