Experimental Drifts of Juvenile Chinook Salmon Through Effluent Discharges at Hanford in 1968

Description: Young chinook salmon held in live boxes were drifted through Hanford reactor discharges in the central Columbia River, with the objective of evaluating the affect of heated effluents on fish survival. No significant mortalities of fish were recorded from 12 drifts during the spring (March--April) when base river temperatures were low, ranging from 4 to 7.6 C. Some mortalities occurred, however, in 3 of 24 drifts conducted in late summer (August--September) when base river temperatures extended … more

A Study of the Defect Structure of Nonstoichiometric CeO2

Description: The electrical conductivity of arc cast specimens of Ce1+yOx have been measured as a function of temperature and oxygen pressure. These preliminary results indicate that although the absolute value of the conductivity for arc cast Ce1+yO2 specimens differs from the sintered specimens the temperature and oxygen pressure behavior is similar. The electron mobility in Ce1+yO2 was calculated from the electrical conductivity and thermodynamic data and the assumption that the atomic defects exist pred… more

THE MOUNTAIN IRON DIFFUSION PROGRAM: PHASE II SOUTH VANDENVERG: VOLUME 3

Description: A series of field diffusion experiments conducted at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California are discussed. These tests were designed to provide the necessary data from which an empirical equation, derived by multiple regression analysis, has been developed. This equation is to be used as a range safety tool in support of missile activities on the Air Force Western Test Range at the Sudden Ranch Launch Complex, SLC-6. The field experiments utilized a fluorescent pigment, zinc sulfide, U. S. Radiu… more

Effect of ground motion from nuclear excavation: interim canal studies

Description: The effect of ground motion due to nuclear excavation of a sea-level canal at two alternative routes, 17A and 25E, are discussed from the aspects of motion prediction and structural response. The importance of the high-rise building problem is stressed because of its complexity. Several damage criteria are summarized for advance planning of excavation and operation. The 1964 shot schedule and the latest revised schedule are included for comparison.

Comment on Temperature-Pressure Equilibrium Between Dispersed and Continuous Phases of a Material

Description: This memo calls attention to the fact that the relationship between equilibrium temperature and the pressures in two phases of a material is {Delta}sdT = {Delta}(vdP) , and not, as now routinely assumed by bubble investigators, the Clausius-Clapeyron equation {Delta}sdT = {Delta}vdP . If one phase is discontinuous (subscript "d") and consists of spheres of radius r in a continuous phase (subscript "c") whose pressure is held constant, then the equilibrium temperature will be… more

Sensitivity to VSR failure: K pipe break accident

Description: Reactor effects of failure of a safety rod to scram can be considered in two major respects: The reduction in total safety system strength which will affect the amount of ``prompt drop`` and subsequent flux decay rate of the average neutron flux-level; and the change in local flux distribution due to the absence of the particular rod which fails to enter the reactor. The purpose of this memorandum is to describe the physical effects involved and to indicate the approximate magnitude of both rea… more

Review of Existing and Potential Test Sites in Areas 18, 19, and 20, Pahute Mesa, Nevada Test Site

Description: Abstract: "Recent request for new sites has prompted an overall review of the Pahute Mesa area. The criteria used in this review are that the geology must be favorable and that horizontal spacing of emplacement holes being developed should be 2.5 to 3 times hole depth. The review shows that current emplacement requirements have exhausted available explored sites and have effectively eliminated 90 percent of the blocks of ground geologically favorable for chambered sites."
