Metallurgy Division Quarterly Report [for] October, November, and December 1955

Description: A total of nine clad plates, containing uranium -5 w/o zirconium 1.5 w/o niobium alloy cores and clad with Zircaloy-II, were rolled in plain carbon steel jackets, heat treated, physically evaluated, and corrosion tested. All these plates were found to be within predetermined dimensional tolerance in width, thickness, length, cladding thickness, and core distribution. Improved control of wielding variables and of the length of the seal pin projecting above the end plugs resulted in the eliminati… more

Geothermal energy

Description: The following subjects are discussed: areas of ''normal'' geothermal gradient, large areas of higher-than-''normal'' geothermal gradient, hot spring areas, hydrothermal systems of composite type, general problems of utilization, and domestic and world resources of geothermal energy. Almost all estimates and measurements of total heat flow published through 1962 for hot spring areas of the world are tabulated. (MHR)

Neutron absorption lithium detector

Description: It is planned to manufacture ceramic target elements for use in N-Reactor. The potential exists for overdilution of the lithium-aluminate with aluminum powder. One method of nondestructively determining the target element type is by neutron absorption. This technique makes use of the different thermal neutron cross sections of aluminum and lithium. The target element to be tested is placed between a neutron counter and a neutron source--the neutron count with the unknown sample is then compared… more

Neutron and fission yields from high-energy deuterons in infinite /sup 238/U targets

Description: Early work on the interaction of high energy deuterons with large /sup 238/U targets is reexamined and current theoretical study is discussed. Results of fission and neutron yield calculations are compared with experiment. (SDF)

Foaming agents for removing problem liquids from gas wells

Description: The Bureau of Mines determined agents that are effective in foaming heavy brines and oil from gas wells in severe concentrations of sodium chloride, in severe concentrations of calcium chloride, or in moderate oil-brine mixtures. Dynamic tests were designed to select the more effective foaming agents. Numerous foaming agents were tested in concentrated simulated brines, in oilfield brines having varied concentrations of ions, in heavy natural brines, and in a commercial brine generally used as … more

Creep in model pillars. [Salt, trona, and potash ore]

Description: A study was made of the deformational behavior (creep) of pillars made from three quasi-plastic rock--salt, trona, and potash ore. The first phase of this study considers the design of a model pillar suitable for creep tests; in the second phase, six model pillars were prepared from salt from two sources, from trona, and from potash ore. The pillars in each group were subjected to a different but constant axial stress, and the axial strain was measured for 1,000 hours. An analysis of the data s… more

Thermo-physics technical note No. 53: thermal and hydraulic analysis of the Tower Shield Facility experiment heat rejection system

Description: The analysis of the thermal and hydraulic characteristics of the heat rejection system of the Tower Shield Facility (TSF) experiment is presented. Among the subjects discussed here in considerable detail are the convective and radiative heat rejection capability of the heat exchanger, NaK circulation around the system loop or driven by a SNAP 2 thermoelectric pump or natural circulation, and temperature distribution throughout the system both in transient and steady-state conditions.

Thorium processing nuclear safety review

Description: A review of the nuclear safety aspects of a proposal to process about 150 to 250 tons of thorium containing about one kilogram U-233 per ton has been made. The review was made at the request of the Chemical Processing Department in whose Purex plant the thorium processing will be carried out. The review group finds that the proposed operation can be conducted with no more risk of criticality than attends the standard plutonium processing in Purex, provided the safeguards planned by the Departme… more

DATA SET FOR LOW-SPEED REMOTE TERMINALS

Description: Data transmission over telephone lines involves the acceptance of serialized binary data, modulation of the data to a signal suitable to the bandwidth of the telephone. channel, transmission of the signal over the line, reception at the receiving end and demodulation of the signal to reproduce the original binary data. One typical application of data communication is between a low-speed terminal and a computer. In such a case, full-duplex operation is often desirable (i,e., transmission of info… more

Supplement to "Studies on the Equilibrium Temperature for the Plutonium Alpha-Beta Transformation"

Description: The cited paper presents data which establishes the equilibrium temperature for the alpha-beta transformation of Pu at 117.0 ±0.5°C. This was observed by following the electrical resistance change in thin, high purity, mixed-phase specimens as they were thermally cycled near the transformation temperature. As expected the time required for small phase changes near the equilibrium temperature was long. Data regarding the mechanisms of the alpha-beta and beta-alpha transformations or rates as a f… more

The Use of Non-Linear Regression Methods for Analysing Sensitivity and Quantal Response Data

Description: A great many special methods for the statistical analysis of sensitivity or quantal response data have been developed during the past century. This paper demonstrates that many of these techniques can be considered in the light of non-linear regression methods which have been made more tolerable in recent years with the prevalence of high-speed computers.
