ABCC-NIH Adult Health Study Hiroshima 1958-60. Cardiovascular Project Report Number 6, Heart Size Norm

Description: Data on 13,000 person 15 yr of age or older obtained during detailed clinical examinations, including radiological recorded heart size, were correlated with sex, age, height, and weight of subjects to arrive at a standard heart size for Hiroshima residents This information will be used in investigations cardiovascular disease in the population.

The Active Center in Enzyme Action

Description: It is now apparent that a biological system synthesizes an enzyme molecule that is larger than is necessary for it catalytic function. Biological necessities other than catalysis or the evolutional history of protein synthesis may have required these large molecules. Whatever the reasons it is clear that major portions of the protein can be removed or modified without affecting the enzyme activity. Moreover, simple geometric considerations indicate that the substrate can only be in direct conta… more

Adult Health Study : Review of Substudies, June 1962, Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Description: Data are summarized from a series of studies to determine the late effects of radiation in adult populations of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Results ae reported from studies on skin aging, hair greying, cardiovascular findings, neuromuscular response, antibody levels, ocular aging, auditory aging, and miscellaneous aging characteristics in persons exposed to radiation from the atomic bombs as adults; growth and development studies on exposed persons born between 1935 and 1945; the incidence of neopl… more

Analysis and Design Significance of A-11 Flow-Induced Vibration Test, Phases I and III

Description: Comparisons of the experimental data on seal pressure distributions obtained from the A-11 Flow Induced Vibration Test, Phases I and III, with analytical results including porous flow through the unimpregnated inner reflector cylinder for the same operating conditions show generally very good agreement. The principal deviations between analysis and experiment occurs when high pressure ratios exist across the last seal. Additional investigation, both in the relationship used in the analytical … more

Biomedical Reactor Investigations

Description: Biomedical work with reactors falls into four main categories; activation analysis; the use of isotopes produced in the reactor particularly, short lived isotopes; radiobiological investigations using the reactor beams; and approaches to the therapy of neoplasia using neutron radiations from the reactor. The first two, activation analysis and short lived isotopes, are adequately covered by other speakers. With respect to radiobiological research the possibilities are extensive and are limited o… more

Calculation of the Shock Wave From an Underground Nuclear Explosion in Granite

Description: The capability of calculating the close-in effects of the shock wave from an underground nuclear explosion has been demonstrated. Agreement was obtained between calculation and measurements using a spherically symmetric, hydrodynamic, elastic-plastic code called SCC for the Hardhat event, a 5-kiloton nuclear detonation in granite. This capability is dependent upon having a more or less complete description of the elastic and dynamic properties of the materials involved. When this information is… more
