Research on the Basic Nature of Stress Corrosion for Various Structural Alloys at Room and Elevated Temperatures, Part 2

Description: Report discussing research on the basic nature of stress corrosion for various structural alloys at room and elevated temperatures. Program objectives were: (1) to study the effect of microstructure on susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking in the short-transverse direction of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy; and (2) to study the kinetics of stress-corrosion cracking at elevated temperature of candidate materials for structural applications in the trisonic transport in the presence of sea salt. Str… more

Investigation of a Method for the Prediction of Vibratory Response and Stress in Typical Flight Vehicle Structure

Description: Report discussing the outcomes of a program to predict the vibratory response of a complex structure such as an aircraft fuselage or missile to a random external forcing function. The various needs for better handling of new phenomena in structural dynamics are given. A dynamically similar structural model is presented along with a demonstration which includes design, construction, and test of such a model.

Two-Phase Pressure Losses: Fourth Quarterly Progress Report November 12, 1962 - February 12, 1963

Description: This is the fourth quarterly report on the work done under Contract AT(04-3)-189. The results reported here have to do primarily with single-phase loss and two-phase pressure drop in the 1/4" x 1-3/4" rectangular channel in the flow up and flow horizontal orientations, and two-phase pressure loss across two contraction-expansion inserts in the 1/2" x 1-3/4" channel.

Molecular Geometry and the Vapor Pressures of Isotopic Ethylenes: Chemical and Structural Isomers

Description: The theory of isotope effects on vapor pressures for systems with large quantum effects, as manifested by the cross-over phenomenon and deviation from the rule of the mean, is illustrated by the large body of experimental data on the isotopic ethylenes which has recently become available. An effect of molecular geometry was found, viz. a difference in vapor pressures of cis-, trans- . and gemdideuteroethylenes. This was shown to be related to the hindered rotation about the C=C axis in the liqu… more

The Ultraviolet Sensitivity of Frozen Phage

Description: Recent reports (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) suggest that the crystalline structure of ice permits unusual forms of energy relationships and that the structured state of water may be of importance in the whole cell. A number of biologically interesting compounds show significantly altered responses to the excitation energy of ultraviolet light in ice as compared to the liquid state. This paper describes the effect of a change in phase state on a biologically active nucleoprotein, a bacteriophage particle. Ph… more
