Single Particle Excitation Theory Of The Photonuclear Giant Resonance

Description: Calculations of the photonuclear giant resonance according to the Wilkinson model are presented in this report. In this model the giant resonance in the cross section for absorption of gamma rays by nuclei is ascribed to the excitation of large numbers of nucleons in closed shells. The model generally predicts correctly the integrated cross section for the giant resonance, bu the resonance energy is too low. Results are presented in a series of tables and formulas so that the integrated cross s… more

The Fixation of Caesium on Australian Minerals. Part 2, Zeolite Minerals

Description: Samples from possible zoolite bearing deposits have been tested for cation exchange capacity using batch and column experiments. The best material, Eagleton Quarry pink shale, was given more exhaustive column tests to determine the effect of mineral particle size, influent flowrate, and the presence of competing cations on caseium breakthrough. Diffusion of caesium ions through the mineral particle controls the ion exchange process. At the optimum size of (-30+36) B.S.S. the cation exchange cap… more

The Fixation of Caesium on Australian Minerals. Part 1, Vermiculite Minerals

Description: Samples of vermiculite from Young River, W.A., and Kingaroy, Qld., have tested for cation exchange capacity using batch and column experiments. The better material, Young River vermiculite, was given more exhaustive column tests to determine the optimum particle size and to investigate its selectivity for caesium ions in the presence of higher concentrations of competing ions. At the optimum particle size of (-30+60) B.S.S. the cation exchange capacity of Young River vermiculite was approximate… more

Process Simulation on a Digital Computer Using Analog Methods

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "A system has been developed to program a digital computer in much the same manner as an analog computer is programmed. Properties of a general purpose analog computer and a digital differential analyzer are combined to yield a program which employs, as input, standard data cards prepared from a diagram analogous to an analog computer diagram. The capacity of the system is much greater than that of most analog computers, making it applicable to large simulation… more

Pressure Pulses in Rapid Transient Boiling

Description: Investigation of whether the multi-thousand psi pressure pulses that occurred in the BORAX-I and SPERT-I destructive power excursion could have been generated by thermal mechanisms in the geometries of unmolten reactor cores. These pressure pulses were "at least as high as 6,000 psi, and probably higher than 10,000 psi " in BORAX I, and "between 3,000 and 4,000 lb/in" in SPERT I. An experimental investigation was undertaken of pressure pulse generation by purely thermal means.

Water Spectra and Energy Exchange Kernels

Description: Many measurement of neutron spectra have been made in water assemblies. In these system a large part of the spectrum is given by an essentially Maxwellian distribution at the moderator temperature which is insensitive to the scattering model. Hence, the test of the energy exchange scattering kernel is in the difference of the spectrum and the fundamental or Maxwellian component. The figure shows the spectrum for the Nelkin model. Once the fundamental has been subtracted neither theoretical mode… more

Residual and Fission Gas Release from Uranium Dioxide

Description: Abstract: Residual and fission gas release from UO2 were studied in the laboratory and in in-reactor experiments. Arc-fused powder and sintered pellets were used to determine the rate of evolution and types of residual gases as a function of temperature. Fission gas release was related to the average UO2 temperature and fission gas release calculations were made using the latest thermal conductivity values, isotopic half lives, and branching ratios available in the literature. The results obtai… more

Specific Zirconium Alloy Design Program Quarterly Progress Report: Fifth Quarter, April - June, 1963

Description: A program is in progress for the design of a zirconium base alloy for steam service as nuclear fuel cladding. Thirty-one alloys selected for study of corrosion rate, hydriding rate and hydrogen embrittlement are in test. The corrosion testing of 1800 coupons to 3000 hours at at 300, 400, and 500 degrees C in refreshed steam has been completed. Statistical data analysis of the corrosion results are reported and alloys showing better corrosion performance at all test temperatures than that for Zi… more

Description: Activities in a program to develop techniques in the use of pulsed neutron sources to measure shutdown parameters related to large thermal power reactors are reported. The development of pulsed neutron source techniques for large power reactors has led to a new theoretical model recently developed by E. Garelis and J.L. Russell, Jr. The theory is presently based on a bare, one-group model with m-delayed precursors and takes all spatial modes into account. Results indicate, however, that the app… more
