An Integral Design Technique for Wideband Multistage Transistor Amplifiers

Description: Presented herein is a philosophy for designing wideband multistage transistor amplifiers. The amplifier is visualized as an integral unit, the interstage networks constituting the elements of the amplifier unit. By designing the amplifier as a unit and adjusting the overall response (gain and bandwidth) with the interstage time constants, an increase in gain-bandwidth product is realized over the iteratively designed amplifiers. The resulting increase in gain-bandwidth product results from abse… more

Neutron Dosimetry in and Around Human Phantoms By Use of Nuclear Track Emulsion

Description: The validity of the nuclear track emulsion technique for fast-neutron dosimetry is examined in the exposure of a human phantom to PuBe neutrons, Semiautomatic track scanning and high-speed data analysis obviate the major disadvantages of emulsion dosimetry, and allow the absolute differential proton track energy spectrum at various locations in the phantom to be obtained without a serious cost in time. From this are calculated the total absorbed local tissue dose due to proton recoils and the l… more

Crystal Structure Of B 'Cu0.75Al0.25

Description: The problem of crystal structure of the martensitic B1 phase of the eutectic alloy in the Cu-Al system still requires a more accurate clarification (Hun ger and Dienst 1960, Tarora 1949). Martensitic phases in general are formed through small thrust (shear) deformations of the original lattice. On this basis the results of Hunger and Dienst (1960) are doubtful, since the lattice constants found by them have required a considerable reclassification. From the known lattice constants of the B1 pha… more

A Revised Version Of A Review Of Nuclear Fission. Part One - Fission Phenomena At Low Energy

Description: This revised version contains material published in the two years since the original report was issued in January 1960. The report covers the history of the discovery of fission, fission theory, and the probability of fission. It discusses the distribution of mass in fission, the distribution of nuclear charge in fission, kinetic energy of fission fragments, and the role of neutrons and gamma rays in fission.

Cobalt (II) Halides as Electrolytes in Acentonitrile

Description: "The electrical conductance of CoCl2 and CoBr2 from 10−4 to 10−1 mol/l over the temperature range 0–35°C is reported. The effects of water as trace impurity, and the halide common ion effect on conductance are examined. The properties of these solutes are also examined using spectrophotometry and transport numbers. Crystalline “solvated” compounds, of empirical formulae [CoX2(CH3CN)3]x can be separated from the saturated solutions. The magnetic susceptibilities of the crystalline substrates are… more

Linearized Three Component Magneto-Hydrodynamics

Description: "A linearized three component MHD theory is given. The three components are two oppositely charged species and a neutral species. Linearized macroscopic equations are presented which in the limit of vanishing magnet field reduce to fluid dynamical equations, and in the limit of vanishing neutral components is frictional. In addition the sound speed that enters is a function of three equilibrium densities. These equations yield a dispersion relation which is tenth order in the wave speed. The d… more

A Relocatable Assembly System for the I.B.M. 1620 Computer

Description: The indirect addressing feature of the I.B.M.1620 computer has been used to overcome the difficulty of cross—referencing separately assembled subroutines within a computer programme. A relocatable assembler has been devised which permits the separate assembly and testing of such subroutines. The concept of a "next subroutine" has been introduced, and its applications to interpretive systems such as Fortran shown.

Purification of Carbon Dioxide for Reactor Purposes. Part III, Drying

Description: Comparison of the adsorption characteristics of the desiccants silica gel, alumina, and molecular sieves has shown that molecular sieves have by far the greatest capacity of the desiccants at the low partial pressures considered. Equilibrium data in the form of isotherms were established over the range of variables expected in the coolant circuit of a proposed Australian H.T.G.C. reactor. The mass transfer from the gas phase to molecular sieves is such that no correlation could be attempted for… more

The Application of Wax Laps to Vibratory Polishers

Description: From introduction: "In this paper the adaptation of the wax lab surface vibratory polisher is described. The wax lap requires little maintenance during the life of the lap. It is not necessary to remove any of the holding devices on the bowl to clean and recondition the lap. The bowl is merely washed out, recharged and placed in operation. The wax lap will not wrinkle or tear, nor is it necessary to change it each day such as the silk or nylon cloths."

The Mass Spectra of the α-Amino Acids

Description: From abstract: "The mass spectra of the α-amino acids have been obtained in a mass spectrometer equipped with a heated crucible ion source. Correlations of these data have been made with the molecular formulae of the ion fragments, and mechanisms leading to these fragments are proposed. Comparisons of these data have been made with the mass spectra of the ethyl esters of the amino acids and with other carboxylic acids and their esters."

Formation Constants of the Complex Species Formed by Interaction of Rare-Earth Nitrilotriacetate Complexes with an Equivalent Amount of Base

Description: From abstract: "The formation constants of the RChOH- species, formed by interaction of individual rare-earth nitrilotriacetate species and KOH at 25°C and an ionic strength of 0.1, have been determined by the potentiometric method, i.e., computed from the pH values of equilibrium mixtures containing varying proportions of rare-earth complex and base. The relationship of these constants to the ion-exchange separation of rare earths at high pH has been discussed."

Progress in Sintering

Description: From abstract: "Sintering is broadly defined as all aspects of the adhesion, densification, shrinkage, and consolidation which accompanies the reduction in surface energy of a powder compact which occurs upon application of heat and/or pressure. The process of sintering is then further divided into the initiation, material transport, and grain growth-recrystallization stages. A general review is made of each of these stages, noting typical work which has contributed to progress in each area inv… more

The Adsorption and Surface Reactions of Hydrocarbons on Clean Iridium

Description: From abstract: "The adsorption of ethane, ethylene and acetylene on clean iridium in a field emission microscope has been found to cause characteristic changes in the work function of the iridium surface. Further changes, which are time and temperature dependent, result when such surfaces are heated. Flash filament experiments have shown that the changes in work function upon heating are due to desorption reactions and that the desorbed product consists principally of hydrogen. By assuming a li… more

Separation of Neptunium and Plutonium by Anion Exchange

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "The separation of neptunium and plutonium by anion exchange in nitrate solutions was studied under a wide variety of experimental conditions. A method of separation was developed that is adaptable to remote operation in the plant. In the method, Np(IV) and Pu(IV) are absorbed on an anion exchange resin from 8M nitrate solution. The column is washed with 8M HNO3 to remove contaminants; then the Pu is removed as Pu(III) by washing the column with HNO3 containing… more
