Statistical Analysis of the Frequency and Severity of Accidents to Potential Highway Carriers of Highly Radioactive Materials

Description: The probability of accidents to tractor semitrailers is developed through analysis of accident frequency data in relation to season; geographical factors; road type, traffic and populatlon density; and type of carrier business. Maximum likelihood rates are developed for the potential carriers of radioactivity. Impact characteristics of accidents are studied through the analysis of mass, speed, and energy relations and the effect of these on vehicle and cargo damages is explored. (auth)

Ground Water Test Well A, Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada: A Summary of Lithologic Data, Aquifer

Description: Abstract: "ground-water test well A was drilled to a depth of 1,870 feet with rotary and cable-tool equipment. Only alluvial materials were penetrated. These were saturated below 1,605 feet. Pumping and bailing tests indicate that the minimum transmissibility of the alluvium is about 800 gallons per day per foot. The specific capacity was 1.9 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown after 1 hours of pumping at rates of both 41 and 60 gallons per minute. A suite of geophysical logs, a summary of contract costs, and a detailed description of drilling equipment and casing record are presented."

Equations Representing Reactor System with Emphasis on KIB Digital Program

Description: "This report is written as a supplement to LAMS 2539. It is hoped that one will be able to read LAMS 2539, with emphasis on the fourth part (Memorandum N-4-79OU by 0. Farmer), with this memorandum to bridge the gaps and understand more about the model used and what the KIB Program can be used for. The system is defined by subsystems or subprograms: Thrust System, Heat Exchanger, Neutron Dynamics, Rod Actuator Dynamics, and Thermocouple Dynamics. The original Kiwi-B Flow System is included in the first part of LAMS 2539. This has been replaced by the newer system which includes a turbo-pump (per R, Bohl & E. Wheatley). This system will not be included here. Recommendations are made for improvement and more work in certain areas."

Preliminary Studies of Scavenging Systems Related to Radioactive Fallout : Summary Report, May 1, 1960 to March 31, 1961

Description: Abstract: "Experimental investigation of aerosol particle capture by evaporating and condensing water drops has shown that capture is a function of the rate of water drop growth and aerosol particle diameter. Capture was found to be proportional to the rate of water vapor condensation and inversely proportional to aerosol particle diameter. The influence of water vapor gradient and particle size on aerosol particle capture during evaporation is insignificant. The experimental results are explained on the basis of particle penetration through the boundary layer of a water drop. An analysis of previous research on radioactivity of dry particulate matter in an urban atmosphere is included."
