Analysis of Radiation From Hnpf Cold Traps and Primary Sodium Pumps During Removal and Shipping

Description: The expected maximum contamination of the HNPF cold traps and primary sodium pumps was determined along with the maximum dose rates from these components during removal and shipping. Suitable shielding for casks to be used in the removal operation and for shipping these components away from the reactor site is specified. Access to an unshielded cold trap is limited by high dose rates, i.e., 100 mr/hr at 120 ft, after 180 days decay time. A handling cask providing a radial shield of 3 in. of lea… more

Casting Development for Uranium-Molybdenum Alloy Shapes

Description: The casting of shapes of uranium--molybdenum metal of varying sizes and thicknesses from a molten charge has been successfally accomplished with specificially designed graphite distributors and molds. Solid cylinders, hollow cylinders, and flat plate shapes were cast in gang molds. As many as 35 solid cylinders have been cast simultaneously. All castings had smooth surfaces, and solid shapes were cast to 0.006-in. tolerance on all dimensions except length. (auth)

COATING OF GRAPHITE WITH SILICON CARBIDE BY REACTION WITH VAPOR OF CONTROLLED SILICON ACTIVITY

Description: In the reaction of silicon halides with graphite to form silicon carbide, thermodynamic conditions were determined for the formation of SiC, free of elemental silicon. The use of these conditions was designed to limit the rate of coating formation by the rate of diffusion of carbon through the coating, and render the operation independent of the vapor-flow factors which normally limit the uniformity of vapor-deposited coatings. Although a wide range of pressure- temperaturecomposition condition… more

Comments on Engineering Review of PRTR by Atomic Power Equipment Department

Description: On a project of the magnitude and complexity of the Plutonium Recycle Test Reactor is was considered prudent engineering practice to obtain an independant design review by a competent off-site group that had not participated in any way in the development of the design. Accordingly, the Atomic Power Equipment Department of the General Electric Company was requested to make such an engineering review, and an Assistance to Hanford contract authorizing this work was approved by the Atomic Energy Co… more

Decontamination Program Task II. Volume II, Evaluation of Chemical Agents for Nuclear Reactor Decontamination

Description: Abstract: The caustic permanganate-rinse decontamination treatment was investigated. Loop and metallurgical studies were performed to determine optimum operating conditions as well as the metallurgical effects of the treatment. A treatment with 10 percent sodium hydroxide and 5 percent potassium permanganate solution followed by a rinse with a 5 percent ammonium citrate, 2 percent citric acid and 1/2 percent Versene solution was chosen for the decontamination of a stainless steel steam generat… more

DETECTION OF ThO$sub 2$ CONTAMINATION IN SIMULATED CUTS AND ABRASIONS

Description: Tests have been made to determine the sensitivity of various radiation detection instruments for known amounts of ThO/sub 2/ contained in simulated cuts and abrasions. A shielded Geiger-Mueller counter tube can be expected to detect at least 0.1 mg ThO/sub 2/ when counting for a reasonable length of time provided the ThO/sub 2/ deposit is on the surface of the subject being counted. A shielded gamma-spectrometer-crystal, set at a 50-kev cutoff, can be expected to detect at least 0.5 mg ThO/sub … more

Determination of Chemical Characteristics of the 1B Boiler. Section II. Test Results DL-S-209.

Description: The purpose of the test was to determine the extent of mixing when chemicals are added to an idle boiler. The conclusion was that the chemicals added to the 1B boiler in a hot, idle condition did not become evident in any of three sampling locations tested within a period of two hours after the chemical injection. It is concluded that circulation in idle boilers is inadequate to promote the mixing necessary to distribute chemicals throughout the unit in a two hour period.

Determination of Oxygen in Oxide Films by Neutron Activation Analysis

Description: Preliminary experiments have been conducted to evaluate the use of the nuclear reactions Li6 (n,α)H3 and O16(H13,n)F18 to determine the thickness of oxide films on metals. Sheets of thin paper and of aluminum, imbedded in powdered LiF, were irradiated with pile neutrons at a flux of 6 x 10^11 n/cm^2/sec and counted with an end-window proportional counter. A saturation activity of 1.87 hr F18 of 150 dis/min per microgram of oxygen was observed in the paper, but radioactivity due to impurities ma… more
