On the Existences of a Magnetic and Focusing Length in a Synchrotron

Description: Measurements of S and s values indicate that existence of two different effective lengths in the azimuthal direction. We call them equivalent magnetic length and equivalent focusing length respectively. We demonstrate that the first one is the length to be used for the calculation of the radius and the second one in the calculation of the field gradient values. The formulas for the structure of the Cambridge Electron Accelerator are derived on this basis.

Sodium Boiling -- Explanation of Section IV.4 of my July 2, 1957 memorandum on "Sodium Boiling Calculations

Description: I have prepared an explanation of Section IV.4 of my July 2 memorandum on sodium boiling. The derivation of equation (5) is tricky because of the slip between vapor and liquid. There should be other approaches to this problem that will give the same result. I will outline the only method I could think of that didn't get fouled up along the way because of slip.

Fission Fragment Ionization and Electrical Power Production

Description: "A reactor concept is discussed consisting of parallel plates, spaced with a gap equal to plate thickness with a 2.0 v potential available across the gap. Fissions are assumed to take place in a mixture of U and Ar gas between the plates. The operating scheme is as follows: U fissions in the gas; the fission fragment energy is almost all absorbed by ionization of the gas, leading to a high ion pair density in the gas; positive and negative particles are swept out of the gas by the 2.0 v field, … more

Radiochemical Separation and Activation Analysis

Description: "The present facilities at the University of Michigan for research in nuclear chemistry are described. The determination of the cross sections of various (d, alpha ) reactions induced by the 7.78 plus or minus 0.05 Mev deuterons from the University of Michigan cyclotron is presented. The work on the absolute (d, alpha ) reaction cross sections has been aimed at surveying the reaction yields as a function of atomic number with the hope of establishing the presence or absence of closed shell effe… more

Precise Vapor Pressure Measurement At High Temperature

Description: "An apparatus using a silica Bourdon gage is described for the measurement of vapor pressures or dissociation pressures with an accuracy of 0.1 mm and 0.1 deg C up to maximum pressures of atmospheric or beyond and maximum temperatures of 650 to 1250 deg C. The method is applicable to corrosive substances, to substances whose vapor pressure is sensitive to slight changes in composition, and to substances difficult to purify of volatile contaminants which affect the vapor pressure."

Fundamentals of Glass-to-Metal Bonding VII. Studies of Wettability of Platinum by Molten Sodium Silicate Seventh Technical Progress Report

Description: This paper describes further studies of the basic phenomena involved in glass-to-metal wetting and bonding, which are underway in this laboratory. The current objective was to determine more exactly the effect of the nature and pressure of the gas phase upon wetting in a relatively non-reacting liquid glass-solid metal system.

Progress Report and Publication List: Diffusion in Metals

Description: This is the progress report and publication list for diffusion in metals. It lists the progress made on studying the diffusion in pure noble metals, the isotope effect in metallic diffusion, diffusion in binary alloys, self-diffusion in alpha silver-cadmium and alpha silver-indium. Additionally, it looks into the effects of pressure on diffusion.

The Probability Distribution of Fallout Patterns Due to Wind Variability

Description: In this paper is presented a method of computing the probability distribution of the error between Dp and Do due to random changes in the winds from the predicted winds. The method is accurate for single-wind fallout models with a circular Gaussian distribution of wind errors. Also, it may be useful when the best forecast of post-shot winds is a persistence forecast, which is often the case or a climatic forecast, as when shot time is unknown.

A Comparison of Some Piezoelectric Ceramics

Description: This memorandum summarizes some of the basic physical properties of barium titanate, lead-zirconate titanate, and lead metaniobate which are of importance to the use of these materials as piezoelectric transducers. Emphasis is placed on the advantages of lead metaniobate due to its extended temperature range of operation and on the importance of further work to improve the quality of this material.

A Study of the Carrier Distillation Excitation of Iron in U3O8

Description: Abstract: "A radioactive tracer, Fe^59, was used to determine the disposition of iron as a result of the excitation of a U3O8 matrix in a d - c arc. Two different spectrographic procedures, both using carrier distillation excitation techniques, were compared as to the percent of iron volatilized, the percent of iron diffused into the electrode and the percent of iron remaining in the residual charge."
