An Investigation of Scaling of Zirconium at Elevated Temperatures : Quarterly Status Report No. 10; Sept. 2, 1955 to Dec. 2, 1955

Description: As previously reported, zirconium undergoes large dimensional increases after scaling in air in a critical temperature range, 700 degree-1050 degree C. This finding was observed with specimens of a constant thickness (0;062 in.) To study the thickness effect, a number of specimens ranging in thickness from 0.020 to 0.200 in. were scaled in air at a temperature (900 degree C) where the growth is a maximum for a given time. Both cold rolled iodine sheet and forged iodide bar stock were used. to d… more

Airborne Reconnaissance in the Valley of Fire-Muddy Mountains Region, Nevada

Description: Abstract: The Valley of Fire-Muddy Mountains region, located 20 to 30 miles northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada, was given approximately 25-percent airborne radioactive coverage during the fall of 1954. Rocks in the area range from Cambrian to Miocene in age. Uranium was known to occur at two sedimentary horizons at the time the airborne program began. One new uranium-bearing sedimentary horizon was discovered by the airborne reconnaissance. Of 15 anomolies detected, only 11 were posted as the remai… more

Flight and Preflight Tests of a Ram Jet Burning Magnesium Slurry Fuel and Utilizing a Solid-Propellant Gas Generator for Fuel Expulsion

Description: Data obtained from the first flight test of a ram jet utilizing a magnesium slurry fuel are presented. The ram jet accelerated from a Mach number of 1.75 to a Mach number of 3.48 in 15.5 seconds. During this period a maximum values of air specific impulse and gross thrust coefficient were calculated to be 151 seconds and 0.658, respectively. The rocket gas generator used as a fuel-pumping system operated successfully.

Effect of Pressure on Thermal Conductance of Contact Joints

Description: Technical note presenting tests conducted to determine the factors influencing the thermal conductance across the interface formed between stationary plane surfaces of 75S-T6 aluminum-alloy and AISI Type 416 stainless-steel blocks. The types of joints investigated included bare metal-to-metal contact, contact surfaces separated by a good conductor (brass), and contact surfaces separated by a thin sheet of insulation (asbestos). Results regarding the effect of surface roughness, pressure, mean i… more

Photosynthesis

Description: The overall process of photosynthesis involves a number of interconnected processes. These processes, which are cyclic with respect to both energy and material, are related at some points to well-known respiratory processes. The carbon-reduction cycle in photosynthesis is now known in detail. All enzymes involved in this cycle have been isolated and the sources of energy required for its operation have been identified in terms of reducing agents and 'high-energy' phosphate. These sources of ene… more

The Relation of Quantum Requirement in Photosynthesis toRespiration

Description: 1. The r a t e s of photosynthesis and subsequent respiration of Chlorella pyrenoidosa were measured using an oxygen analyzer (sensitive to paramagnetism). The energy absorbed during the photosynthesis periods was determined and the quantum requirement was calculated. 2. Dark respiration r a t e was found to depend on the r a t e of light absorption during the period of photosynthesis, and increased with increasing photosynthesis rate. 3 . The quantum requirement, corrected for respiration, var… more

Wind-tunnel investigation at Mach 1.9 of multijet-missile base pressures

Description: From Summary: "An experimental wind-tunnel investigation was conducted at Mach 1.9 to determine the pressures acting on the base of a multijet missile using unheated air and carbon dioxide as jet fluids. The variation of base pressure with jet static-pressure ratio was compared with results estimated for an axisymmetric single-jet model and some correlation was observed."

Electrical Precipitator for Aerosol Collection on Electron Microscope Screens

Description: In order to utilize the advantages of the electron microscope for the study of respirable particles, it is desirable to have an instrument capable of sampling from atmospheres having very sparse dispersions of particles at a rate sufficiently high to result in precipitation densities of approximately one particle per 10/u² of microscope screen for a 10 minute sampling period. In order to avoid qualitative or quantitative alteration of the aerosol, it was desired that the instrument collect the … more

Comparison of Flame Photometer and Conductivity Meter for the Determination of NaCl from Respirator Testing

Description: periodically the Industrial Hygiene Unit has the occasion to perform efficiency tests on respiratory protective devices and on filter cartridges used with these units. A study of the relative merits of the flame photometer and conductivity meter was made to determine which is more applicable for the determination of NaCl in filter samples.

Electrodeposition of Aluminum on Uranium

Description: Abstract: "Aluminum electroplating was studied in a search for new methods of cladding uranium fuel elements. Uranium electroclad with 12 mils of aluminum over a 0.5-mil (or nickel plus copper) electroplate resisted corrosion for more than 100 hr in boiling water. This quality of protection was effected by hot pressing the electroclad uranium with 5.1 tons per sq in. for 5 min at 950 F. The electroclad uranium with hot-pressed samples paralleled those of later experiments with hot-pressed wroug… more

Electroplated Metals on Uranium for Aluminum Cladding

Description: Abstract: "Aluminum-clad nickel-plated uranium is corrosion resistant in boiling water. Samples with intentional defects in the aluminum-nickel clodding layers, after testing for more than 300 hr. showed no sign of rapid failure. The study of electroplated metals on uranium for aluminum cladding has defined the effects of several processing variables on the corrosion resistance. The quality of the uranium and the quality of the aluminum-nickel bond were important. Heat treatment and vacuum outg… more

Homogeneous Reactor Test Summary Report for the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards

Description: The Homogeneous Reactor Test (HRT) is the experimental reactor facility (Frontispiece) being designed and constructed at ORNL as the next step in homogeneous reactor development between the 1-Mv HRE and a "full-scale" power station. The HRT will provide an integrated test at 5 to 10 Mv for the flowsheet and equipment designs on which the full-scale effort will be based. Furthermore, its design is such that several homogeneous systems which require essentially the same operating equipment may be… more

The Elimination of Microwave Reflections

Description: Abstract: "The reflections of microwaves from the walls of a plasma-containing vessel are studied. The probable cause of the reflections is discussed, and several suggestions are made for eliminating the reflections from the waveguide in the vessel and particularly from the pyrex vessel wall and copper tubing surrounding the pyrex. Quarter-wave-thick carbon-filled plastics or glasses having a very low vapor pressure room most promising when placed inside the pyrex cylinder. BaTiO3 appears to be… more
