Atmospheric Contamination Associated with Inert-Gas-Shielded, Consumable Electrode Welding

Description: Apparent excessive concentrations of atmospheric contamination which were reported to be associated with an inert-gas-shielded consumable electrode arc wielding operation were studied to evaluate the potential health hazards. A study was made of the concentrations of metal fume and gaseous products of the operation as well as the spectrum of ultraviolet radiation. Recommendations for necessary controls were made.

The Theories of Turbulence

Description: "The theory of turbulence reached its full growth at the end of the 19th century as a result of the work by Boussinesq and Reynolds. It then underwent a long period of stagnation which ended under the impulse given to it by the development of wind tunnels caused by the needs of aviation. Numerous researchers, attempted to put Reynolds' elementary statistical theory into a more precise form. During the war, some isolated scientists - von Weizsacker and Heisenberg in Germany, Kolmogoroff in Russi… more

Analysis of the Horizontal-Tail Loads Measured in Flight on a Multiengine Jet Bomber

Description: "The primary objectives of the present paper are to report the horizontal-tail-loads measurements for configuration B which have not previously been reported and to summarize the horizontal-tail-loads results obtained with both configurations. The manner in which the aerodynamic-loads data were analyzed to include structural temperature effects and fuselage flexibility effects constitutes an important part of the present paper" (p. 1).

Effects of Wing-Fuselage Flow Fields on Missile Loads at Subsonic Speeds

Description: "The flow-field characteristics around a swept-wing airplane model at low subsonic speed are described, and the loads induced on a typical missile model while operating within these flow fields are presented. In addition, theoretical flow fields are compared with experiment and are used in first-order estimations of the resulting induced missile loads" (p. 1).

Experimental Static Aerodynamic Forces and Moments at Low Speed on a Canard Missle During Simulated Launching From the Midsemispan and Wing-Tip Locations of a 45 Degree Sweptback Wing-Fuselage Combination

Description: Report presenting an investigation at low speed to determine the static aerodynamic forces and moments on a canard missile model during launching from the midsemispan and wing-tip locations of a wing-fuselage combination with a 45 degree sweptback wing. When the missile was mounted under the wing at the midsemispan location, changes in chordwise position produced large changes in missile forces and moments.

Experimental Static Aerodynamic Forces and Moments at Low Speed on a Missile Model During Simulated Launching From the 25-Percent-Semispan and Wing-Tip Location of a 45 Degree Sweptback Wing-Fuselage Combination

Description: Report presenting an investigation at low speed in the 300 mph tunnel to determine the static aerodynamic forces and moments on a missile model during simulated launching from 25-percent-semispan and wing-tip locations of a wing-fuselage combination. Results regarding the differences in location and effects induced by the fuselage are provided.

A method for the analysis of compounds containing boron, carbon, and hydrogen

Description: Report presenting a method for analyzing each of the elements, boron, carbon, and hydrogen from the quantitative analysis of a single sample of an organoboron compound. The method is helpful for the analysis of volatile hydrocarbons and polynuclear aromatic compounds.

Visualization study of secondary flows in turbine rotor tip regions

Description: Report presenting a visualization study using smoke to see the secondary-flow phenomena in the rotor-blade tip region of a low-speed turbine. Measurements of the factors affecting the flow patterns were recorded from visual observations. Results regarding a general description of the smoke patterns, shroud boundary-layer considerations, transition rotor tip speed, and high-speed-turbine operating conditions are provided.

Preliminary investigation of effect on performance of dividing conical-spike nose inlets into halves at Mach numbers 1.5 to 2.0

Description: Inserting a splitter plate in the subsonic diffuser caused a pressure-recovery loss of about 1 percent for an inlet with a long nearly constant-area throat section. The loss was due to the increased surface area. Another inlet, which had a comparatively rapid area increase immediately after the throat, experienced pressure-recovery losses of 5 and 6 percent at Mach numbers of 1.8 and 2.0, respectively, and about 1 percent at Mach 1.5.

Calculated Heats of Formation and Combustion of Boron Compounds (Boron, Hydrogen, Carbon, Silicon)

Description: Memorandum presenting the calculation of the heats of formation and combustion for liquid and gaseous alkyl- and silyl-substituted boron compounds by a semitheoretical method. The results indicated that alkylation and more especially silylation reduce the heat of combustion. Results regarding alkyl- and silyldecaboranes, diborylmethane, diborylethane, and their alkyl derivatives, bipentaboranyl and bideocaboranyl, dipentaboranyl- and didecaboranylalkanes, and heats of combustion of isomers are … more

Some Dielectric Properties of Suspensions of Boron Powders in Mineral Oil

Description: Memorandum presenting measurements of the dielectric constant for suspensions of two types of boron powder in mineral oil as a function of concentration of boron particles, moisture content, temperature, and frequency of oscillation. Also investigated were the effects of boron-powder concentration and moisture content on the dielectric losses of mineral-oil suspensions of the two boron powders.

Carnotite Resources of San Miguel Bench, Montrose County, Colorado

Description: Abstract: San Miguel bench includes about 4 square miles in the southern part of T. 48 N., R. 17 W., New Mexico principal meridian, Montrose County, Colorado. Production of carnotite ore from the area has been about 15, 000 short tons having an estimated average graderof 0. 31 percent U3O8,and 1. 6 percent V2 05 Nearly all of the carnotite deposits occur in a single-continuous sandstone bed near the top of the Salt Wash member of the Jurassic Morrison formation. These deposits consist chiefly o… more

Regeneration of Silver Reactors

Description: A study of the variables involved in regeneration was undertaken to determine means of improving the regeneration efficiency and increasing the useful life of a reactor. Information gained from regeneration studies on a 4-inch-diameter by 8-foot-high column indicates that the present regeneration procedure is optimum as to quantity, concentration, and rate of addition of regenerant solution. It appears feasible to restore a plugged reactor by washing off all the silver nitrate from the packing … more

Potential Nitrate Decomposition High Level Waste Storage

Description: It is recommended that self-concentration of Purex wastes should not be started until much more complete knowledge is obtained of the conditions and reactions in these wastes. The presently planned tests in the Semi-Works will be a practical demonstration of the problems but will be of little value on the initial Purex wastes as these tests are being run almost concurrent with the filling of the first Purex storage tank.
