Thermal Spikes and Uranium Instability

Description: Thermal spikes occurring during the life of a slug in a pile cause a momentary destruction of the original configuration of atoms in the metal. This process occurs at such a rate that in a thermal neutron flux of 10(13) neutrons per square centimeter per second each atom in the metal will be subject to temperatures above the melting point of uranium every 40 minutes.

RDA DC-6 -- Design criteria for reactor water plant at Coyote Rapids site. Instruction letter number 1

Description: The design will be based on one reactor with a potential capacity of 1,300 megawatts. For the time being this reactor will be designated ``X``. The water plant will be designed to supply 100,000 gpm initially. The design shall provide, however, for the ultimate capacity of 140,000 gpm; i.e., underground process piping, space in river pump house, and other items which would be difficult to enlarge after initial construction, will be sized for the ultimate capacity and provision shall be made for… more

Weighting Factors for Radically Flattened Piles

Description: The following report calculates pile reactivity changes that result from different pile loadings where it is desirable to have available values of (flux)2 d(volume) for various flat zone radii. This information was found for a cylindrical pile having circular flat zones and an effective radius of 598 cm., by integrating over a cross sectional volume of one cm. thickness.

Heat and Free Energy of the Reaction AmCl₃s + H₂O(g) = AmOCl(s) + 2HCl(g)

Description: In a previous paper a method of measuring the equilibrium constants at various temperatures for the titular reaction has been described. This report applies the method to an investigation of the corresponding reaction of americium, representing a part of a systematic program of investigation of the thermodynamic properties of analogous reactions of lanthanide and actinide elements.

Occurrence of the 4n + 1 Series in Nature

Description: "A small quantity of a Np-237, the long-lived ancestor of the 4n + 1 series, has been isolated from a natural source. The Th-229 content of the Th-230 obtained from Belgian Congo pitchblende concentrate and of Th-232 obtained from Brazilian monazite has been determined indirectly through isolation of the Ac-225 daughter. The mass ratio of Np-237 to U-238 in the Belgian Congo pitchblende concentrate has been determined as (1.8 +/- 0.4) x 10-(-12). The mass ratio of U-233 to U-238 in the same ore… more

First Quarterly Report on the Reductions of Uranium Oxides

Description: The preliminary results of a program designed to evaluate methods for preparing uranium hydride from the various oxides of uranium are presented. The apparatus has been designed and constructed for the purpose of carrying out batch reductions under a variety of conditions employing calcium hydride, calcium metal and magnesium metal as the reducing agents. Since the separation of the alkaline earth oxides, present as by-products in the furnace products, promises to be the most difficult problem … more

Geology of Horse Mesa, Arizona - New Mexico, with Recommendations for Wagon Drilling

Description: Abstract: Horse Mesa is in the Navajo Indian Reservation directly on the Arizona-New Mexico state line. Uranium-vanadium deposits in the Salt Wash sandstone which caps the Mesa are fairly widespread and small tonngges have been shipped from two mines. The deposits lie 60 to 75 feet above the base of the Salt Wash formation and possibly trend northwest parallel to ore trends on King Tutt Mesa, a mile northeast. Carnotite and vanoxite are the principal ore minerals. About 6,000 feet of wagon dril… more
