Altitude-Wind-Tunnel Investigation of a 3000-Pound-Thrust Axial-Flow Turbojet Engine 6 - Analysis of Effects of Inlet Pressure Losses

Description: The losses in the inlet air ducts, the diffusers, and the de-icing equipment associated with turbojet engine installations cause a reduction in the total pressure at the inlet of the engine and result in reduced thrust and increased specific fuel consumption. An analytical evaluation of the effects of inlet losses on the net thrust and the fuel economy of a 3000-pound-thrust axial flow turbojet engine with a two-stage turbine is presented. The analysis is based on engine performance characteristics that were determined from experiments in the NACA Cleveland altitude wind tunnel.

Aluminous Lateritic Soil of the Republic of Haiti, W.I.

Description: From abstract: Aluminous lateritic soil containing as much as 50 percent of alumina (A120) Is found in several places in the Republic of Haiti. The largest deposits are on the Rochelois Plateau southwest of Miragoane on the Southern Peninsula. Mapping and drilling of the deposits indicate fifteen million long tons in place (dried basis). It is estimated that a minimum of 10 million long tons of this reserve is recoverable. The average chemical composition of this material is as follows: A1203, 46.8 percent; SiO2, 3.4 percent; T1O2, 2.8 percent; Fe20, 21.9 percent ; P206, 0.6 percent ; MnO5, 0.5 percent ; and loss on ignition, 24.1 percent. Other localities in which similar lateritic soil occurs are Beaumont in the Massif de la Hotte ; the vicinity of Savane Zombi in the Massif de la Selle ; and Savane Terre Rouge on the plateau northwest of Gonaives. In none of these regions were large deposits found.

Coals of Chile

Description: From Introduction: "The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the coal from beds mined in the Schwager and Lota mines will produce metallurgical coke suitable for use in the blast furnaces at the proposed steel plant at Conception, and whether the quality of the lower-rank coals from other areas in Chile, especially those in Magallanes, where the large coal reserves of Chile appear to exist; can be improved by processing."

Determination of Stresses in Gas-turbine Disks Subjected to Plastic Flow and Creep

Description: From Summary: "A finite-difference method previously presented for computing elastic stresses in rotating disks is extended to include the computation of the disk stresses when plastic flow and creep are considered. A finite-difference method is employed to eliminate numerical integration and to permit nontechnical personnel to make the calculations with a minimum of engineering supervision. Illustrative examples are included to facilitated explanation of the procedure by carrying out the computations on a typical gas-turbine disk through a complete running cycle."

The Determination of Uranium in K-65 (Gangue Lead Cake)

Description: The major problems in this determination are the extraction of X from the sample and the isolation of the extracted X. The application of various analytical methods to these two problems indicates that the current method of analysis yields values which may be as much as 15% high. The current method of analysis is subject to positive and negative errors. The magnitude of these errors varies with techniques and with sample composition. The recommend method, although longer, is believed to be free of these errors, but a radical change, say 100 fold, in the composition of the sample would certainly require further investigation.

Description: "Tests were made of a 1/10-scale dynamically similar model of the North American XFJ-1 airplane to study its behavior when ditched. The model was landed in calm water at the Langley tank no. 2 monorail. Various landing attitudes, speeds, and conditions of damage were simulated. The behavior of the model was determined from visual observations, by recording the accelerations, and by taking motion pictures of the ditchings" (p. 1).

Effect of centrifugal force on the elastic curve of a vibrating cantilever beam

Description: From Summary: "A study was made to determine the effect of rotation on the dynamic-stress distribution in vibrating cantilever beams. The results of a mathematical analysis are presented together with experimental results obtained by means of stroboscopic photographs and strain gages. The theoretical analysis was confined to uniform cantilever beams; the experimental work was extended to include a tapered cantilever beam to simulate an aircraft propeller blade. Calculations were made on nondimensional basis for second and third mode vibration; the experiments were conducted on beams of various lengths, materials, and cross sections for second-mode vibration."
