Tanks test of a model of the hull of the Navy PB-1 flying boat - N.A.C.A. Model 52

Description: A model of the hull of the Navy PB-1 flying boat was tested in the N.A.C.A. tank as part of a program intended to provide information regarding the water performance of hulls of flying boats of earlier design for which hydrodynamic data have heretofore been unavailable. Tests were made according to the general method over the range of practical loadings with the model both fixed in trim and free to trim. A free-to-trim test according to the specific method was also made for the design load and take-off speed corresponding to those of the full-scale flying boat. The resistance obtained from the fixed-trim test was found to be about the same as that of the model of the NC flying-boat hull, and greater at the hump but smaller at high speeds than that of a model of the Sikorsky S-40 flying-boat hull.

Tank tests of models of flying boat hulls having longitudinal steps

Description: Four models with longitudinal steps on the forebody were developed by modification of a model of a conventional hull and were tested in the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) tank. Models with longitudinal steps were found to have smaller resistance at high speed and greater resistance at low speed than the parent model that had the same afterbody but a conventional V-section forebody. The models with a single longitudinal step had better performance at hump speed and as low high-speed resistance except at very light loads. Spray strips at angles from 0 degrees to 45 degrees to the horizontal were fitted at the longitudinal steps and at the chine on one of the two step models having two longitudinal steps. The resistance and the height of the spray were less with each of the spray strips than without; the most favorable angle was found to lie between 15 degrees and 30 degrees.

Description: From abstract: The Monument Valley-Navajo Mountain region is part of the Colorado Plateau and includes about 1,100 square miles in San Juan County, southeastern Utah, lying between the San Juan and Colorado Rivers on the north and the Utah-Arizona State line on the south. Included in the region are Navajo Mountain, the Rainbow Natural Bridge, and a part of the picturesque Monument Valley.

Tank Tests of a Model of the NC Flying-Boat Hull - N.A.C.A. Model 44

Description: "A 1/7.06 full-size model of the NC-type hull was tested in the N.A.C.A. tank by both the general method and the specific or free-to-trim method. The results of the tests are given in curves plotted as non dimensional coefficients and are compared with the test results of N.A.C.A. model 11-A. The NC model (N.A.C.A. model 44) shows higher resistance than model 11-A at hump speed but lower resistance at high speeds. Model 44 has a higher best trim angle at the jump and a lower maximum positive trimming moment than model 11-A. At high speeds the best trim angle and the trimming moments of the two models are approximately the same" (p. 1).

Relative Efficiencies and Design Charts for Various Engine-Propeller Combinations, Special Report

Description: "The relative efficiencies of various engine-propeller combinations were the subject of a study that covered the important flight conditions, particularly the take-off. Design charts that graphically correlate the various propeller parameters were prepared to facilitate the solution of problems and also to clarify the conception of the relationships of the various engine-propeller design factors. It is shown that, among the many methods for improving the take-off thrust, the use of high-pitch, large-diameter controllable propellers turning at low rotational speeds is probably the most generally promising" (p. 1).

Geomorphology of the North Flank of the Uinta Mountains

Description: From introduction: The geologic record of the Tertiary period in the Green River Basin of southwestern Wyoming consists, in a broad way, of two quite different parts. The history of the first part, lasting through the Eocene epoch and perhaps on into the early Oligocene, was recorded in a thick series of sedimentary rocks of fluviatile and lacustrine origin. The history of the second part was recorded chiefly by successive stages of stream planation and stream trenching, but also in part by fluviatile sedimentation and, in certain localities, by glacial deposits. The first part of the record is virtually continuous, though its interpretation is by no means simple and obvious. The second part of the record is distinctly fragmentary, and the evidence the fragments provide is difficult to evaluate and to integrate.

Cooling tests of a single-row radial engine with several NACA cowlings

Description: The cooling of a single-row radial air-cooled engine using several cowling arrangements has been studied in the NACA 20-foot wind tunnel. The results show the effect of the propeller and several cowling arrangements on cooling for various values of the indicated horsepower in the climb condition. A table giving comparative performance of the various cowling arrangements is presented. The dependence of temperature on indicated horsepower and pressure drop across the baffles is shown by charts. Other charts show the limiting indicated horsepower against the pressure drop across the engine and the heat dissipated at various values of the indicated horsepower.

Combustion-engine temperatures by the sodium line-reversal method

Description: The sodium line-reversal method has been used in some preliminary measurements of flame temperature. Improvements in the method involving a photographic recorder and a means of correcting for the dirtiness of the windows are described. The temperatures so obtained are compared with those calculated from pressure diagrams.

Mechanical Properties of Aluminum-Alloy Rivets

Description: "The development of metal construction for aircraft has created a need for accurate and detailed information regarding the strength of riveted joints in aluminum-alloy structures. To obtain this information the National Bureau of Standards in cooperation with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics is investigating the strength of riveted joints in aluminum alloys. The strength of riveted joints may be influenced by the form of the head, the ratio of the rivet diameter to the sheet thickness, the driving stress, and other factors" (p. 1).

Strength of Welded Aircraft Joints

Description: "This investigation is a continuation of work started in 1928 and described in NACA-TR-348 which shows that the insertion of gusset plates was the most satisfactory way of strengthening a joint. Additional tests of the present series show that joints of this type could be improved by cutting out the portion of the plate between the intersecting tubes. T and lattice joints in thin-walled tubing 1 1/2 by 0.020 inch have somewhat lower strengths than joints in tubing of greater wall thickness because of failure by local buckling. In welding the thin-walled tubing, the recently developed "carburizing flux" process was found to be the only method capable of producing joints free from cracks" (p. 177).

Sampling and Examination of Mine Gases and Natural Gas: A Revision of Bulletin 42

Description: Revision of a report by the U.S. Bureau of Mines which described experiments performed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to study mine gases. According to the foreword: "Much of the material is reprinted on the following pages in its original form, and changes have been made only where manifestly necessary. Laboratory methods have been brought up to date. Some types of apparatus described in Bulletin 42 have now become obsolete and newer designs are described instead" (p. 1).

Geology of the Coastal Plain of South Carolina

Description: From abstract: The Coastal Plain of South Carolina extends from the Atlantic Ocean inland a distance ranging from 120 to 150 miles to the Fall Line, where it adjoins the Piedmont province. It includes an area of more than 20,000 square miles, or nearly two-thirds of the State, whose total area is 30,981 square miles, of which 494 square miles is water. The geographic divisions of the Coastal Plain are the marine coastal terraces, or "low country", which stand less than 270 feet above sea level, and the Aiken Plateau, the High Hills of Santee, the Richland red hills, and the Congaree sand hills.
