Description of Core from Atomic Energy Commission Drill Hole Number 1, Project Gnome, Eddy County, New Mexico

Description: From abstract: Drilling at the Project GNOME site, which is in the approximate center of sec. 34, T. 23 S., R. 30 E., NMPM, was undertaken in August and September 1958 by the W-W Drilling Company. The purpose of drilling this hole, which is at the precise location of the proposed shaft, was to determine (1) the lithologic and water-bearing characteristics of the rocks of Cenozoic, Mesozoic, and Paleozoic age that lie above the salt-bearing sequence in the Salado formation; (2) the depth to the top of the unleached salt and associated evaporites in the Salado formation; and (3) the local details of the salt-bearing sequence in the Salado formation.

Reconnaissance for Uranium in the Coal of São Paulo, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Description: Abstract: Uranium-bearing coal and carbonaceous shale .of the Rio Bonito formation of Pennsylvanian age have been found in the States of Sao Paulo, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The uranium oxide content of the samples collected in the State of Sao Paulo ranges from 0.001 percent to 0.082 percent. The samples collected in Santa Catarina averaged about 0.002 percent uranium oxide; those collected in Rio Grande do Sul, about 0.003 percent uranium oxide. Since the field and laboratory investigations are still in their initial stages, only raw data on the radioactivity and uranium content of Brazilian coals are given in this report.

Engineering Geology Bearing on Harbor Site Selection Along the Northwest Coast of Alaska from Nome to Point Barrow

Description: From abstract: This report describes geologic and oceanographic factors relevant to the selection of a site in northwestern Alaska, at which an experimental harbor can be created by the explosion of a nuclear device. Part I describes the results of a preliminary survey of the entire coastal and offshore region between Nome and Point Barrow: Part II consists of a more detailed evaluation of the Cape Thompson-Cape Seppings area; and Part III is a theoretical consideration of the effect of the ocean upon the temperature and distribution of permafrost. The report is based entirely upon the study of published and unpublished reports, field notes, and maps, interviews with the few geologists who have visited the region, and the interpretation of aerial photographs.

Preliminary report on Bureau of Mines Yellow Creek corehole no. 1, Rio Blanco County, Colorado

Description: Analysis of geologic, hydrologic, and geophysical data obtained in and around Yellow Creek core hole No. 1, Rio Blanco County, Colorado, indicate a 1,615-foot section of oil shale was penetrated by the hole. Geophysical log data indicate the presence of 25 gallons per ton shale for a thickness of 500 feet may be marginal. The richest section of oil shale is indicated to be centered around a depth of 2,260 feet. Within the oil shale the interval 1,182 to 1,737 feet is indicated to be relatively structurally incompetent and probably permeable. Extension of available regional hydrologic data indicate the oil shale section is probably water bearing and may yield as much as 1,000 gallons per minute. Hydrologic testing in the hole is recommended.
