Dry Fluoride Process Status Report

Description: Technical report outlining how uranium hexaflouride was prepared be the direct combination of irradiated uranium metal with elemental fluorine and subsequently decontaminated by adsorption, filtration, and sublimation on a laboratory scale. Report proposes a survey of other methods of preparing UF6 from uranium metal, a study of adsorption techniques for removing plutonium from UF6, and an investigation of fractional distillation for removing the volatile fission product fluorides from UF6. The Effect of Fluoride on the Corrosion of Stainless Steel in the Presence of Excess Al+3 Ion

Description: Technical report detailing corrosion tests of Type 347 stainless steel for two weeks in boiling uranyl nitrate, sulfuric acid media, with and without additions of Al+3 and F-1 in a 2:1 mole ratio. The results of these tests show that although the presence of aluminum greatly reduces the deleterious effect of fluoride, the corrosion rates are still three to four times greater than when no fluoride is present. Products Produced in Batch Neutron Irradiation of Thorium

Description: Calculated data and graphs describing the effects of batch thermal-neutron irradiation of thorium, the usual method of operation of heterogeneous reactors, are presented. The buildup and decay of U233, Pa233, other heavy isotopes, and fission products are considered on the basis of best available cross-section and fission-yield data. The effects of these irradiation products on the Thorex chemical separation process are indicated briefly.

Analytical Chemistry Division Semiannual Progress Report For Period Ending October 20, 1955

Description: The development of ionic methods for the determination of corrosive products in the highly radioactive Homogeneous Reactor (HR) fuels has been of major interest in the work of the Ionic Analyses Laboratory. Methods for the spectrophotometric determination of aluminum and for the polarographic determination of iron in HR fuels have been developed. The polarographic determination of molybdenum in uranyl sulfate solutions was studied. A polarographic method for the determination of zinc was develo… more

Multiplication Measurements with Highly Enriched Uranium Metal Slabs

Description: A series of neutron multiplication measurements with arrays of 1 by 8 by 10 in. slabs of 93.4% U235-enirched uranium metal have been made to provide data from which safety criteria for the storage of these fissile units can be established. Each slab contained 22.9 kg of U235. A maximum of 125 unites was assembled. The arrays studied were cubic lattices of the units and were usually parallelepipedal in shape.

Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report September 1960

Description: Measurements of the interfacial tension between water and tributyl phosphate solutions were made for application to the analysis of Marengoni effect in solvent extraction. A 24 hr flame calcination run to product Th02 particles yielded 40% as product and 54% collected from the furnace walls and from a coarse particle trap. The elution rates of uranyl ion from Dowex 21K using sodium nitrate could be approximated by assuming apparent diffusion coefficients of 1.67 x 10^-7 and 1.18 x 10 ^-7 cm^2/s… more

Analysis of Uranium Fuel-Element Wafers from Atomics International for Uranium, Plutonium and Samarium

Description: Five irradiated and five unirradiated wafers were analyzed. Each wafer was analyzed for samarium by emission spectrography. The unirradiated wafers were analyzed for uranium by coulometric and potentiometric methods and for uranium isotopes by mass spectrometry. The irradiated wafers were analyzed for uranium and plutonium by coulometric methods, for plutonium isotopes by the 256-channel alpha pulse analyzer, and for the isotopes of uranium and of plutonium by mass spectrometry. The methods of … more

Dispersion Strengthening of Iron-Aluminum Base Alloys: A Feasibility Study

Description: The feasibility of improving the mechanical properties at 1700-1800°F of oxidation-resistant Fe-Al-Cr alloys by means of a refractory dispersion has been explored. A literature search was conducted, preliminary experimental determinations of properties of the alloy and its oxides were carried out, and certain mathematical relations between dispersion characteristics and metallurgical variables were derived. The results indicate that the alloys can be strengthened sufficiently by using a dispers… more
