The Absolute Abundance of the Chromium Isotopes in Some Secondary Minerals

Description: From abstract: "Isotopic assays have been made on the chromium in samples from fourteen different chrominiferous minerals from different geographic and meteoritic sources. The results of the assays indicate that it is not possible to unequivocally state that variations in isotopic compositions have been observed."

The Angular Dependence of Thermal Neutron Spectra in Lattices

Description: This technical report discusses techniques that have been developed for "computing the angular thermal flux spectrum emerging from a lattice. These methods are applied to water lattices and it is found that the computed spectra are sensitive to the geometrical description of the lattice, but insensitive to the anisotropic scattering by water. Comparisons with measured spectra indicate that corrections for gradients and the finite size of the experimental lattice are important." -- from abstract… more

Angular Distribution of Relativistic Atomic K-Shell Photoelectrons

Description: From abstract: "Using the high energy limit of the exact Coulomb wave function for the outgoing electron, the differential cross section, correct to three orders in aZ, is calculated for the K-shell photoeffect. An analytic expression, exact in aZ, is obtained for the differential cross section for the special case in which the electron emerges in the forward direction."

Automatic Recording Surface Balance

Description: From introduction: "We have previously described simple modifications of a 'Cenco' hydrophil balance which allowed automatic recording of monolayer compression characteristics. This note describes the torsion balance and trough designed and built in this Laboratory as a result of our experience with the previous instrument."

Bovine Thyroid I 131 in the Absence of Atmospheric Nuclear Weapons Tests

Description: Summary. Cattle in Reno, Nevada, exhibit a constant very low concentration of I 131 in their thyroid glands in the absence of known releases of I 131 to the atmosphere. This concentration is about 1 picocurie per gram of fresh thyroid tissue. ; This I 131 appears to originate below the tropopause

Estimates of Biospheric Contamination and Radiation Dose From Nuclear Explosions up to April 1962

Description: The production and dispersion of fission products and induced radioactivity from nuclear weapon tests are discussed. Estimates are given of the important radionuclides released by the tests conducted up to November 1961. Internal and external doses from fission products are calculated.

Evaluation of Hazards to Population From a Reactor Accident

Description: Consequent to an "accident" during the working of a nuclear reactor there is a possibility that radioactive fission products will get airborne. The airborne activity in the form of cloud will travel with the winds and the size of the cloud will increase as it travels downwind. There are several radiation hazards due to such a cloud and the extent of their hazard depends upon several conditions.

Free Radicals Formed on u.V. Irradiation of o-Nitrobenzaldehyde

Description: This technical report describes the chemistry process of photolysis which was carried out within a Varian 4500 EPR spectrometer. Through this process, it was found that free radicals form both in a powder and in solutions of o-nitrobenzaldehyde. It was found that the formation of free radicals on irradiation of substituted nitrobenzenes was specific for compounds which undergo the photoinduced rearrangement to nitrosocompounds. The report then details the process undertaken to identify the free… more

Graphite Problems in Air-Cooled Reactors

Description: This report discusses problems affecting the long-term use of graphite in air-cooled reactors. The report identifies these problems as oxidation, radiation induced dimensional expansions and accumulation of stored energy. The report finds that "frequent low temperature annealing eliminates these problems and may extend the lifetime of the graphite indefinitely." (From abstract)

Isotope Effects on Intermolecular Interactions and Isotopic Vapor Pressure Differences

Description: From summary: "The isotope effect on the van der Waals interaction resulting from vibrational excitation terms has been discussed in great detail to show that it is a zero-point energy effect. Interaction between rotational, transistional, and vibrational motion in the condensed phase has been also discussed in detail in terms of a very simple model. By use of approximation methods, the order of magnitude of these effects is demonstrated and it is shown that consideration of them is of importan… more
