Angular Distribution of Fragments from the Photofission of U238

Description: Ilford D1 and Eastman NTC nuclear emulsions have been loaded with a solution of uranium acetate and them exposed to the X-ray beam of the Case betatron operated at 18 Mev. The developed plates have been searched wit a Zeiss type microscope. A total number of 1062 fission tracks have been measured and analyzed and the angular distribution of the fission fragments in center of mas system has been obtained.

Automatic Thermogravimetric Analysis in Ceramics

Description: Ceramic investigators often find it desirable to know the weight of reactants either immediately after a given heating period or while the specimen is still at the elevated reacting temperature. The conventional gravimetric methods render either of these goals difficult if not actually impossible. Specimens often gain weight through adsorption of water or other reactions upon cooling to room temperature. Desiccators are employed but are not completely satisfactory. Repeated heating and weighing… more

Beta Gage for Localized Measurements on Thin Films

Description: A gage employing a narrow "pencil" of beta-rays has been developed to determine the thickness of films used a cyclotron targets. The instrument, pictured in Figure 1, allows an estimate of the evenness of films a few mg/cm thick by reproducibly scanning the sample with a collimated beta-ray beam 3/32 in. in diameter.

Bonding of uranium to uranium

Description: From abstract: "Some mechanical properties of uranium joined to uranium by means of sinter welding described. The types of uranium investigated were powdered and cast material. Comparison of results obtained by the testing of the whole and joined material are presented. Although the joined material to date does not possess strength of the whole material, the results are promising. Work is continuing."

Carcinogenesis by Radioactive Substances

Description: Knowledge of the potential dangers of exposure to radioactive substances and the institution of proper safety precautions have helped to reduce accidental exposures to radioactive substances. In the following technical report we shall review briefly carcinogenesis in man by naturally occurring and artificially produced radioactive substances, the lung cancer problem in miners, the development of bone tumors in luminous dial painters and in patients treated with radium-containing nostrums, and t… more

Decay Scheme of In107

Description: The gamma radiations of In107 have been investigated with a scintillation spectrometer . The In107 was produced in a cyclotron by a (d,n) reaction on electromagnetically enriched Cd106. Beta-gamma and y-y coincidence experiments showed in addition to the annihilation radiation, only one y ray of 0.22 Mev associated with the 2.2 Mev positron.

The Decomposition of Solid Barium Nitrate by Gamma Rays

Description: There was considerable disagreement between results obtained by early investigators who studied the interaction of ionizing radiations with solid nitrates. It was thought worthwhile, therefore, to extend their work and to make certain that reproducible results were being obtained. It was expected that the nitrite ion and oxygen would be found in equivalent amounts in the irradiated samples. Four measurements of nitrite ion and oxygen indicate that the decomposition of barium nitrate by gamma r… more

Denitration Loss of Ruthenium from Uranyl Nitrate Beta Mounts

Description: Abstract: "During the preparation of beta-gamma mounts of uranyl nitrate it is possible to affect a denitration loss of approximately 80% of the ruthenium. By adding hydroxylamine sulfate and sulfuric acid, the ruthenium is stabilized and the denitration loss is eliminated. The standard determination of ruthenium by calculation, utilizing a differential counting technique has been found to be approximately the same as the standard denitration of radiochemical assays."

Development of a Furnace for Melting and Casting Uranium Metal

Description: Introduction: "At the start of the uranium project, it became necessary to design and construct a furnace suitable for melting and casting uranium powder into massive form. Early experiments showed that pressed and sintered compacts of uranium powder were inferior to the cast metal. Since the metal powder is quite phrophoric, such casting would have to be done in an inert atmosphere or in vacuum. Preliminary investigations indicated that the powder could be melted in vacuum induction furnace. F… more

Effects of X-Irradiation on the Plasmas of Chickens as Revealed by Serological Analysis. Part I, Whole Plasma Comparisons. Part II, Alteration of Proteins of the Liver (a Preliminary Report). Part III, Autoantibody Formation (a Preliminary Report)

Description: Irradiation of a living animal with X-rays induces alternation in the proteins of cells in which ionization events occur. Systematic end-products such as the proteins of plasma would, by changes in quality and quantity divulge modification of their synthetic pathways, or compensatory responses of the hematopoietic systems to stresses caused by irradiation in other organs. Serological identification of proteins, a sensitive means of biochemical characterizations was chosen to reveal variations i… more

Genetic Resistance to X-Irradiation in Mice

Description: A comparison was made of the effects of X-irradiation on mice of the high leucocyte (LCH) count strain and low leucocyte count strains. Among 30-day old mice, the LCH strain had a significantly lower mortality after irradiation, but in five-month old mice there was no difference between strains. Weight changes after irradiation do not differ between strains, in either age group. Leucocyte counts of both strains drop to the same level several days after irradiation. Mortality, changes in leucocy… more

The Iodine Pentafluoride-Hydrogen Fluoride System. Solid-Liquid Equilibria, Vapor Pressures, Molar Volumes and Specific Conductances

Description: Some properties of the iodine pentafluoride-hydrogen fluoride system have been investigated. The solid-liquid phase diagram show a eutectic point at -83.49 degree C. and 99.5 mole% hydrogen fluoride. The vapor pressures at 15 degree C show positives deviations from Raoult's law but no maximum vapor pressure was observed. There is a small decrease in volume on mixing, the maximum deviation from ideality being 6.6% at 90 mole% hydrogen fluoride. The specific conductance of pure iodine pentafluori… more

Kinetics of Reactions Between Two Liquid Phases

Description: Reactions of particular metallurgical interest are those which take place between two immiscible liquid phases. The common slag, metal reactions, in both smelting and refining processes, are typical examples. May other refining systems use salts instead of slags, such as fused salt processing to remove fission products from liquid metal fuels. If the two phases are immiscible and it is not possible for a solute in one phase to exist in the same molecular form n the other phase, reactions betwee… more

Measurement of Respiratory C14O2 Activities

Description: We describe in this technical report a reasonably simple, easily constructed, system that allows the collection of time-course information regarding respiratory C14O2 with little special effort on the part of the investigator. The method described is centered around a small metabolism cage for the animal and a novel technique for counting C14O2. In essence, an air steam containing C14O2 is brought part the window of a think end window G.M. tube contained in a lead shield. activity detected by t… more
