Technical and economic potentials of shale oil production by nuclear explosives

Description: "In the following report, a new technology is discussed which was first proposed in 1959, but which has been developed mainly since 1964; the in situ production of oil from shale by large underground retorts created by nuclear explosives. The first part of the present report describes this new process; the second part gives an analysis of the United States and the world endowments with crude oil resources and oil shale deposits and finally, the third part deals with expected cost estimates of this new technology as compared with present crude oil prices and potential costs of conventional shale oil production."

Airborne Radiometric Survey in Northern New Jersey and Southeastern New York

Description: Abstract: "An airborne radiometric survey of the pre-Cambrian Highlands of New Jersey and New York, and Triassic Newark Basin located in 14 radiometric anomalies in the Highlands. No commercial deposit of uranium discovered. Ground checks revealed that most anomalies were caused by large masses or residual boulders of slightly radioactive granitoid gneiss."

Approximate Models for Distributed-Parameter Heat-Transfer Systems

Description: Summary: The use of dimensionless-parameter frequency response diagrams to determine accuracies of lumped-parameter approximations is demonstrated by two examples: calculation of the heat flux at the surface of a semi-infinite solid due to temperature fluctuations of an adjacent fluid; and the response of a counterflow heat exchanger to inlet fluid temperature perturbations. Dimensionless system parameters make it possible to use general-purpose plots to find the error in particular approximations as a function of the frequency of perturbation. Such plots are directly applicable to control-system stability problems, where the highest frequency of interest is usually apparent.

Crystal Structure Studies of the System NaF-UF4, NaF-ThF4 and NaF-LaF3

Description: Abstract: In the NaF-UF4 system the following intermediate phases have been found: NaUF5, -Na2UF6, -Na2UF6 and NacUF7. NaLaF4 is the only intermediate phase observed in the system NaF-LaF3. In the course of an incomplete study of the system NaF-ThF4 the phases NaTh2F9, -Na2ThF6, -Na2ThF6 and Na4ThF8 have been observed. Crystal structure data are given for all the phases.

A Study of Efficiencies and Pressure Drop Characteristics of Air-Filtering Media

Description: Removal of particles from air is discussed in terms of three classes of filtering media--air-sampling, respirator, and air-cleaning. Plots of efficiency versus filtering velocity are presented. The pressure drop characteristics of the filters are discussed in terms of initial pressure drops of the clean filters, variations in pressure drop of the individual filters, and comparison of loading rates.

The Use and Calibration of Scintillation Counter--Model Y

Description: Several improvements have been made in the gamma scintillation counter (GSC). The Model V gamma scintillation counter uses a canned thallium activated sodium iodide crystal as a detector. Although the electronic components remain unchanged, a modification of the sample support has been made to improve reproducibility of geometry. To assure comparable results between various counters, they must be operated at the same energy threshold and counting yield. Methods have been developed to assure operation at a preferred energy threshold of 0.1 Mev and an arbitrarily fixed counting yield of 3.36% for Cs-Ba-137. Partial pulse height discrimination against U 237 is also accomplished.

Radioactive Particle Fallout in the Hanford Environs from Nevada Nuclear Explosions Spring-1953

Description: Various organizations in the Biophysics Section of the Radiological Sciences Department participated in evaluating local radioactive particle fallout as influenced by the nuclear explosions at the Nevada Proving Grounds during the early part of 1953. Data collected from approximately 50 air monitoring stations operated by the Regional Survey forces were used to determine the trend of radioactive particle concentrations in the atmosphere between March and June. These measurements were supplemented with the findings of associated organizations in the Biophysics Section during and immediately after the peak influx on May 26.
