Ion-Chamber Water Monitor
Description:
From abstract: "An instrument capable of detecting fission-product contamination in the moderator has been developed. It consists of a thin-walled ion chamber and associated electronic equipment for automatically detecting deviations from normal moderator decay rate. Indication of fission-product activity is independent of power level, flowrate, and other ambient conditions. Tests show the sensitivity and long-term stability to be good."

Decontamination Program Task II. Volume 1, Contamination and Decontamination in Nuclear Power Reactors
Description:
Abstract: A survey of the problem of reactor system contamination by radioactive material and methods that have been employed to remove the material was carried out. Following this survey, an investigation of chemical solutions was undertaken to find one which might be successfully employed in the decontamination of a stainless steel steam generator. From a preliminary screening, the most promising chemical method from the view point of minimum corrosion and maximum decontamination is a caustic permanganate treatment followed by and acid rinse.

Decontamination Program Task II. Volume III, Recommended Procedure for Decontamination of a Stainless Steel Steam Generator
Description:
Abstract: A decontamination procedure for a stainless steel steam generator similar to the APPR-1 using a fill-flush application of a caustic permanganate-citrate combination solution is recommended. The isolation of the steam generator is to be accomplished by means of specially designed plugs at the reactor vessel outlet and at the primary coolant pumps. Anticipated results, including corrosion rates and decontamination factors, are presented.

High Frequency Induction Heating
Description:
Abstract: Equations are given to calculate at least approximately the heating in solid and hollow cylinders, slabs and spheres. Short and long cylinders are treated as well as short and long solenoids. The complicated mathematics used to derive the equations given will be omitted as they may be found in the original references. Heating with a spark gap converter is covered. Equations are given which together with some experimental data should enable the reader to predict the efficiency, heating, or temperature to be expected as the charge or coil is changed. Units and conversion factors are mentioned briefly.

Elastic Analysis of Stress Conditions in a Reduction Bomb (Task III Replacement Pressure Vessel Model-1302)
Description:
Several failures have occurred in reduction bombs used in metal production operations. A test program is being initiated to evaluate new metals for the construction of the bomb. In the test program, a tensile specimen is cycled through temperatures simulating operating temperatures, and the time to rupture is recorded in order to estimate the life in operation of a reduction bomb made with the candidate metal. In order to find the worst stress condition, the compressive, hoop, and bending stresses must be considered.

Gamma Ray Efficiencies for Well Type Scintillation Crystals
Description:
From Abstract : "Gamma ray efficiencies for various sized well type NaI(Ti) crystals have been calculated using an IBM 704 digital computer. The adjustable parameters in the program are the gamma ray energy, the heights and diameters of the crystal and the well, the thickness of the well lining, and the positions of the (point) source inside the well. The Strontium-Strontium Hydride Phase System
Description:
Technical report. From Abstract : "The Sr-SrH2 phase diagram was studied by thermal analysis, chemical analysis of equilibrated phases and X-ray diffraction. The maximum solubility of SrH2 in strontium metal is 38 mole % at the peritectic temperature of 880°C. Strontium metal undergoes an allotropic transformation at 555°C and melts at 768°C. A second transformation was found, at about 240°C, in samples containing hydrogen. Strontium hydride was found to have an allotropic transformation at 855°C."

High Pressure Research at Low Temperatures
Description:
Two principle reasons exist for the extension of high pressure research to temperatures near absolute zero. First, the comparison of certain data with theory (such as the pressure-volume relationship) is more meaningful if the effects of thermal vibrations can be ignored. Second, there are phenomena which can be studied only at low temperatures. These include superconductivity, the properties of solid helium and other inert gases, some electronic phenomena, etc.

Description:
Technical report. From Abstract : "Ascorbic and isoascorbic acids, used in conjunction with sulfamic acid, reduced Pu(IV) rapidly and completely to Pu(III) in solutions of nitric acid. The solutions of Pu(III) were stable. Aminoguanidine sulfate also retarded the oxidation of Pu(III) but did not reduce Pu(IV)."

Recovery of Neptunium From Purex Waste by an Agitated Bed of Anion Exchange Resin
Description:
Technical report. From Abstract: "Data are presented for the absorption of thorium and neptunium from synthetic waste concentrate of the "Purex" process by a miniature agitated bed of anion exchange resin. The behavior of neptunium indicated that efficient recovery should be obtained from Purex high activity waste concentrate by this technique. A method was developed for calculating absorption losses from agitation beds of resin. The predicted losses were in excellent agreement with experimental results."

Physics Data From a Mockup of the HWCTR Lattice in the PDP
Description:
Technical report. From Abstract: "Experiments were performed in the Process Development Pile (PDP) with a critical mockup of the Heavy Water Components Test Reactor (HWCTR) lattice. Reactivity measurements served to determine control rod worths, the temperature coefficient of the reactor at low temperatures, the dependence of keff on concentrations of U235 and poisons in the "driver" region of the reactor, and the changes in keff that occur in certain conceivable accidents in the HWCTR. Flux distribution measurements were made to determine over-all flux shapes, local flux variations around individual components, azimuthal flux variations due to asymmetrical combinations of control rods, and vertical flux variations obtainable through the use of control rods of partial length. Sufficiently detailed flux measurements were made to permit the calculation of neutron economy tables and to determine the neutron leakage from the reactor. Suitable adjustments in the input parameters made it possible to fit the experimental results with a two-group calculation."

The Y-Nd and Sc-Nd Phase Systems
Description:
Technical report. From Introduction : "In a recent study by Spedding, et al. on some rare earth alloy systems, an intermediate phase was found to form when a light rare earth (ABAC stacking) was alloyed with a heavy rare earth (ABAC stacking). This intermediate phase was found to have the structure of samarium metal with the stacking ABABCBCAC and was designated "delta". Since the cause of this rather unusual structure occurring in either samarium metal or these alloys is not known the study of these phases as some of their properties is continuing in the Ames Laboratory. It was the purpose of the present study to extend our knowledge of the composition and more of formation of these phases."

An Experimental Approach to a Simplified Band Structure of the Rare Earth Metals
Description:
Technical report. From Abstract : "A number of the physical properties from which we can obtain both direct and indirect information concerning the band structures of metals, have been measured for most of the rare earth metals. It was thought that it would be desirable to review ans examine these data and try to tie them together. For this purpose the very low and room temperature heat capacities, Hall coefficients, magnetic susceptibilities, spectral data and electrical resistivities were examined."

Comparative Effectiveness and Additivity of Fission Neutrons Gamma Rays and Beta Rays of Drosphila Eggs
Description:
From abstract: "Some investigations have been made to ascertain the similarity of the mechanism of action of radiation which are different in their specific ionization. A suggested approach was to determine if the energies absorbed from the different types of radiation are additive in their lethal effects on biological objects. In an attempt to determine the additivity of ionizing radiation various dose combinations of fast neutrons, gamma rays and beta rays were administered to Drosophila eggs. These test objects were chosen because their dimensions are such that they tend to absorb these three radiations uniformly throughout their volume. Although the three radiations were found to vary in their biological effectiveness, per unit energy absorbed, all three were shown to be completely additive in their lethal effect on these organisms."
