Separation of Tuballoy From Tantalum by Chlorination Distillation Process

Description: Abstract: Tuballoy can be effectively separated from tantalum filaments by chlorination of the filaments and subsequent distillation and condensation of tantalum chloride. Apparatus for chlorination of filaments and distillation separation in one unit is under consideration. Chemical methods of separation of tuballoy from distillation residues are being tested.

Calculation of k-o in a Uranium-Graphite Lattice

Description: Since the 25 content of the uranium to be used in a MTA multiplying lattice is quite uncertain at present, it is necessary to assume various degrees of depletion in order to estimate the multiplication constant K-o and the production of 49 in an infinite uranium-graphite lattice

Intermediate Heat Exchanger Preliminary Design. Vol. 1, IHX Preliminary Design

Description: Preface: The intermediate heat exchanger is designed for operation in a nuclear power plant using liquid sodium as the primary and secondary coolant. Since the primary fluid coming from the reactor is radioactive, the purpose of the IHX is to transfer heat to a nonradioactive fluid which then goes to a steam generator. Because of this activity the until will be enclosed in a concrete pit and will not be accessible during periods of operation. Immediately after shut down it will be necessary … more

Evaluation of Kanigen, Electroless Nickel Plating for Steam Side of a Sodium Component Steam Generator

Description: Introduction: This is a final report on the evaluation of Kanigen electroless nickel plating for surfaces in contact with water and steam i a sodium heated AISI Type 316 stainless steel steam generator. The purpose of the coasting was to afford protection from stress corrosion cracking originating on the water-steam side of the unit. It has been concluded that the kanigen coating does not afford adequate protection for the services condition intended. This work was performed as part of the r… more

Reactor Automatic Control and Load Swing Tests. Test Results DL-S-144 (T-554924). Section I

Description: The purpose of this test was to determine the controlling ability of the Reactor Power and Temperature Control System and to determine the operational characteristics of the station during load swings. The Reactor Power and Temperature Control System satisfactorily controlled rod movements to maintain all primary plant parameters within their individual limits during steady state operation, ramp functions load changes and a peak xenon burnout transient. The operational characteristics of the st… more

Carnotite Deposits near Edgemont, South Dakota

Description: From introduction: This report describes briefly the deposits of uranium ore discovered in June 1951 near Edgemont, Fall River County, South Dakota. It is a preliminary report, based upon rapid reconnaissance of a small area around the original discovery. It is intended for those who may be interested in further prospecting a large potential area and in developing and mining the deposits.

New Developments in the Theory of Pressure Broadening

Description: An investigation was made into various branches of the theory of pressure broadening by solving two problems: that of treating the motion of the perturbers quantum mechanically and that of overlapping lines. Both problems are solved only in the impact approximation, but this is adequate when the perturbers are electrons, which is the practical case. In addition, the validity conditions of this approximation are examined. (auth)

A Rapid Method for Determination of Water in TO₃

Description: Summary: A set of conditions is described for a ten minute determination of water in TO₃ by ignition and absorption of the evolved water in magnesium perchlorate. Complete conversion to T₃O₃ is obtained under these conditions, so that total loss on ignition and total T (plus non-volatile impurity) content may also be obtained. It has been found unnecessary to employ Cu foil to prevent interference by nitrates, which may be present with a nitrate/water ratio as high as 5, and in an amount that d… more

The Surface Tension of Aqueous Uranyl Sulfate Solutions Between 20' And 75'C

Description: The surface tension of aqueous uranyl sulfate solutions, ranging in concentration from 0.175 molal to 2.340 molal, has been measured at 20', 30', 45', 60' and 75'C. The surface tension increases continually with increasing temperature, becoming in the most concentrated solutions about six percent greater than that for water at the same temperature.

Progress letter No. 11 for January 1, 1960 through January 31, 1960

Description: A stainless steel autoclave for superheated water corrosion test was installed and "conditioned". Tests were begun to investigate the feasibility of densifying slip cast stainless steel by means of liquid phase sintering. Attempts to prepare tubular fuel elements by vacuum forming were resumed. Although thick-walled vacuum formed casting have been sintered on the aluminum mandrels without cracking, this has not yet been accomplished with the think sections of interest.
