The Scandium-Yttrium and Scandium-Zirconium System

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "The scandium-yttrium and scandium-zirconium were studied by thermal and x-ray methods. Both systems are characterized by complete solid solubility in the low temperature hexagonal form and in the high temperature bcc form. In the Sc-Y system, there is a minimum in the solidus at 50 at. pct and 1365°C, while the solidus in the Sc-Zr system follows a nearly straight line relationship between the melting point of scandium and zirconium. There is a minimum in the … more

The Sn Method and the SNG and SNK Codes

Description: The neutron transport equation may be solved numerically, under quite general conditions, by the angular segmentation (Sn) method, which was first described in LA-1599. In the present report we apply the Sn method to one-dimensional problems of the stationary type, the end product being a program for machine commutation, specifically, the SNG Code, written for the IBM Type 704 calculator. We precede the details of the code by a brief discussion of the differential equations, which define the ab… more

Measurement of Weak Neutron Intensities by Szilard-Chalmers Reaction in Calcium Permanganate Solution

Description: From abstract: "A sensitive method for measuring the intensity of weak neutron sources by measuring induced Mn56 beta activity after concentration by a Szilard-Chalmers process has been developed. The practical detection efficiency for Ra-Be neutron is 7.8%; the procedure is capable of detecting a neutron intensity of about one neutron per second."

The Reaction Of Nitrogen With Thorium And The Diffusion Of Nitrogen In Thorium

Description: At elevated temperatures both oxygen and nitrogen react with thorium. In its fabrication, such operations as melting, forging, roiling, swaging, and the like are commonly employed. We would like to know the precautions that must be preserved to prevent contamination of the metal during the various operations.

The Surface Reaction Between Oxygen and Thorium

Description: Abstract: The rate of reaction of oxygen with arc-melted and rolled iodide thorium has been found to obey the parabolic rate law in the temperature range of 850 to 1415 C at 1 atmosphere pressure. The rate constant can be expressed as k = 6 x 10⁷ x e⁻⁶³³⁰⁰/RT cm²/sec. The energy of activation, 63,300 cal/mole, has a probable error of 2,100 cal/mole.

The Grüneisen Parameter for an Einstein Solid and Under Finite Strain

Description: The Grüneisen constant, as evaluated from the equation of state, is obtained for an Einstein solid. the presence of a state of finite hydrostatic pressure is taken into account explicitly by means of Murnaghan's theory of finite strain, to obtain the Grüneisen parameter's on the Debye and Einstein models. Results are identical in the two cases with the corresponding values obtained without use of the formal theory of finite strain.

The Inference of Adsorption from Differential Double Layer Capacitance Measurements

Description: From Abstract : "Dependence of boundary tension and capacitance at the mercury-aqueous 0.1 N HClO4 interface on polarization and organic solute concentration were determined for the colutes n-amyl alcohol and phenol. ... An earlier treatment proposed by this Laboratory based on a (non-thermodynamic) assumption of linear variation of surface charge density with coverage appears adequately justified for inference of fractional surface coverages near the electrocapillary maximum, but must be consi… more

Studies in Beta and Gamma Ray Spectroscopy

Description: The study of artificial radioactive isotopes is at the present time one of the most important topics in nuclear research. It involves the establishment of a detailed term scheme for the disintegration in question. Not only are the energies of the components of the different beta and gamma radiations of interest, but also their intensities. These data give information concerning the probabilities of transitions between the different nuclear energy levels. From them it is possible to draw con… more

Emission Rate of Fission Products from a Hole in the Cladding of a Reactor Fuel Element

Description: It is assumed that when a hole appears in the cladding of a reactor fuel tube the fission products in the space between the fuel and the cladding will diffuse towards the hole. There they are swept away by the flow of steam past the hole. The process of diffusion is assumed to be governed by the ordinary diffusion equation with the boundary condition that the density of the fission products is zero at the surface of the hole. The diffusion equation is solved for the case of steady-state emissio… more
