Preliminary Report on a Colorimetric Method for the Determination of Microgram Quantities of Thorium : Experiments in the Dissolution of O2 Metal [UO2]

Description: Abstract. thorium can be precipitated as a salt of p-dimethylaminoazophenylarsonic acid at a pH of about 1.5. the precipitate, collected on a sintered glass filter is washed with dilute ammonium hydroxide to dissolve the dye. the amount of thorium is determined by measuring the concentration of the dye spectrophotometrically at a wavelength of 450 millimicrons. Zirconium, which interferes, can be separated and determined using the same reagent in strong hydrochloric. the behavior of thorium… more

A Study of Thorium Peroxide Sulfate

Description: Abstract. Thorium peroxide was precipitated from thorium nitrate solutions containing varying amounts of sulfate ion and of hydrogen ion. The washed solids were analyzed both wet and dry. Analyses were made for thorium, peroxide oxygen, sulfate, nitrate, and water contents. X-ray powder photographs of the dried samples by W.H. Zachariasen showed the presence of only two phases. When precipitated from high sulfuric acid, the solid phase was isomorphous with Th(OO)SO4.3H20. More weakly acid … more

The Determination of Tuballoy in the Presence of Thorium in Peroxide Effluents and Cakes

Description: Abstract: "A polarographic method for the determination of tuballoy in thorium peroxide cakes in all sold medium was found to give satisfactory results. Fluorescent analyses on effluents containing thorium gave good results if the thorium content was kept below 1 mg/liter."

The Uranium-Cobalt System

Description: Abstract: "A phase diagram for the uranium-cobalt system has been constructed, based on thermal, microscopic, X-ray and chemical data. The results indicate the existence of three compounds and two eutectics, one of which shows a lowering of the melting point of uranium by approximately 400 C."

The Detection of Small Amounts of Fluorine in Large Amounts of Chlorine

Description: Abstract: "Tests have been developed for both the qualitative detection and quantitative determination of fluorine in chlorine. The qualitative test is made by passing the gas through manganous chloride. If the pink solid tubes brown there is greater than 0.5 percent of fluorine in the gas. The quantitative test is a modification of the Steiger and Marvin Test with oxidized titanium solution."

Mound Laboratory Liquid Waste Disposal Research Quarterly Report for April - June, 1950

Description: The following report is a quarterly report conducted by the Monsanto Chemical Company for liquid waste disposal research, covering the period April through June, 1950. This report discusses experiments that were carried out with both neutralized second-cycle wastes and pure isotope which show that, in general, the presence of fluoride ion does not interfere with the removal of fission products from waste solutions.

An Influence Function for the Beta Activity of Uranium(235) Fission Products

Description: Abstract: "Computations have been made of the total beta activity of the fission products arising from the slow neutron fission of U-235. A curve is given exhibiting the activity the activity per unit fission, for time intervals after fission ranging from 0.01 second to 10 years. This influence function is compared with some published experimental data and with the statistical curve of Way and Wigner. A curve facilitates estimation of the activity in the particular case where the fission rate h… more

Engineering Study of Evaporation for Concentrating Radioactive Liquid Wastes : Engineering Research Final Report

Description: Summary: "The problem of evaporation of secondary radioactive wastes resulting from waste disposal studies at Mound Laboratoy has been studied experimentally to determine the fundamental design characteristics of a plant size unit. Emphasis, of course, was on decontamination, but the factors affecting foaming and scaling also had to be investigated and evaluated. Generally speaking, the final design is a standard type of evaporator, the only unique feature being the relation of the two effects.… more

Special Report of Problem on AEC Contract AT(30-1)-1024: Measurement of the Dielectric Constant of Molten Slag

Description: Two methods of measuring the dielectric constant of molten slag are described and investigated. The conventional standing wave method is shown to be impractical for the range of conductivities expected. The second method utilizes the attenuation of the electromagnetic energy as it propagates into the slag. This method appears to offer a reasonable chance of success if extreme accuracy is not expected. It suffers from the limitation that the conductivity must be known from some other source.

Oak Ridge Static Autoclave Water Decomposition Test

Description: Abstract: "Steady states decomposition product partial pressures of water exposed to an epithermal neutron flux of about 2 x 10-11, at 235F, were 0.4 to 0.65 psi. Recombination studies were made by adding hydrogen and oxygen gases to water under irradiation at different temperature and flux levels. The data show a significant effect of temperature on the rate of pressure drop of the added hydrogen and oxygen. In operating at two flux levels, 1.2 x 10-11 and 2.0 x 10-11, no difference in the rat… more

Determination of half life of polonium-210 by counting: final report

Description: Introduction: "A number of determination have been made of the half life of polonium-210 by calorimetry. Counting affords an entirely different method of determining half lives and requires only a small amount of activity. Therefore for comparison a half-life determination by counting was undertaken with a sample of approximately 0.5 millicurie of polonium."

The Creation of Sexual Isolation by Artificial Selection

Description: Two laboratory strains of D. melanogaster - Ore R marked with the recessive stw and Florida marked with the recessive se -- were carried in a mixed population through 33 generations. In each generation the percentage of stw, se, and wild-type flies was determined; the wild-type flies were discarded, and the next generation set up with equal numbers virgins of the two recessive strains. In spite of a contamination which brought in double recessive phenotypes from generation 16 on, the percentage… more
