An Experimental Study Of The Direct And Indirect Effects Produced By X-Ray Irradiation And By Radioactive Isotopes, With Special Reference To The Protective Role Of The Spleen : Final Report, SRI Project No. R-338

Description: Because of unanswered questions involved in half-body radiation, experimental results were inconclusive as to whether the spleen affords any protection to an x-irradiated rat, although there is some suggestion that the rat's spleen does not give the protection found in mice. The series of experiments on other possible protective mechanisms did not reveal results bearing on the effects of x-irradiation.

The Creation of Sexual Isolation by Artificial Selection

Description: Two laboratory strains of D. melanogaster - Ore R marked with the recessive stw and Florida marked with the recessive se -- were carried in a mixed population through 33 generations. In each generation the percentage of stw, se, and wild-type flies was determined; the wild-type flies were discarded, and the next generation set up with equal numbers virgins of the two recessive strains. In spite of a contamination which brought in double recessive phenotypes from generation 16 on, the percentage… more

Upper Atmosphere Monitoring Program. Progress Report No. 6 Covering period November 1, 1958 to January 31, 1959. Report No. 1903

Description: Programs of research into the physical parameters involved in the collection of airborne radioactive particles and the development, fabrication, and calibration of balloon-borne particle sampling equipment to implement the precise determination of stratospheric particle concentration and particle size distribution are reported. A two-stage rectangular jet impactor which collects airborne particles by impingement on a flat plate and is designed to obtain data on size distribution was fabricated.… more

Supplement No. 2. Supplemental Data for Nuclear-Conventional Power Plant Cost Study. Conventional Coal Fired Power Plants : 25,000 KW to 325,000 KW for Evaluation and Planning Branch, Division of Reactor Development, Atomic Energy Commission

Description: In order to establish a basis for comparing the estimated cost of nuclear power plant designs, a set of general and detailed design considerations for conventional coal-fired power plants was established. Five preliminary designs of conventional coal-fired power plants ranging in size from 25to 325 mw were selected, and cost estimates were prepared. Supplement No. 2 furnishes the following requested information.: (1) Projected investments costs, 1959-1975 for each of the five unites sizes; (2) … more

The Cobalt Transformation

Description: The fcc hcp transformation in cobalt powder (equilibrium temperature = 417 C) was studied by x-ray methods and correlated with the density of stacking faults in both phases. Only the hcp phase is present in the cold-worked powder. The line broadening due to local strains and small particle sizes can be essentially removed by annealing at 300 C, leaving a residual broadening that permits a quantitative determination of the density of random growth and deformation faults. The latter are present i… more

Grain-Boundary Energies in Gold-Copper Alloys. Report No. 35

Description: The ratio of grain-boundary to surface energy has been determined as a function of composition in the gold-copper system. From interferometric measurements of the boundary groove angles in specimens thermally etched at 850°C, the following average grain-boundary to surface-energy ratios were obtained: 0.25, 0.28, 0.34, 0.42, 0.37, and 0.36 at 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 at. % copper, respectively. Existing data for the surface energies yield 370, 320, 310, 390, 430 and 590 erg cm−2, respectively… more

Dispersion in Tidal Estuaries

Description: A number of experiments were conducted at Northwestern University with methylene blue tracer to study the influence on the diffusion process of the periodic variations of flow which are characteristic of tidal estuaries. The oscillatory movement of pollutant was also closely studied with an instantaneous injection of radioactive tritium water in the model of the Savannah Harbor. (W.D.M.)

Dispersion of Fluid Flow in Porous Media

Description: This technical report presents the results of an investigation concerned with the phenomenon of dispersion in porous media flow. In the work, major emphasis has been placed on the problem of one-dimensional, longitudinal flow in porous media, from both theoretical and experimental viewpoints. To date, only limited work has been done on the corresponding radial flow problem. The governing differential equation for the dispersion of a fluid transporting a solute as it flows through porous media c… more

An Investigation of the Fate of Fission Products in the Illinois Waterway System

Description: The project was principally directed towards a consideration of the fate of nuclear fission products if such products were discharged into the Illinois River System. The investigation included theoretical work on flow dispersion and the performance and analysis of field experiments on radionuclide dispersion. The main dispersion experiments were conducted in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, with preliminary experiments being run in Prairie Creek, a small stream located in the Joliet Arsenal… more

Field Emission from Metal Whiskers

Description: Vapor grown single crystal whiskers were produced from Al, Cu, Fe, Ni, Si, Mo, and C. The technique is described, and it is pointed out that it enlarges the scope of field and ion microscopy. Involatile imparities can be eliminated making it possible to grow clean emitters of almost any material in high vacuum.

The Proton Component of the Primary Cosmic Radiation

Description: The proton component has been extensively studied at high altitudes on a series of 6 Skyhook balloon flights at various latitudes using the Čerenkov-scintillation counter technique. The intensity of primary protons has been measured at 4°, 41°, 53°, and 55° geomagnetic latitude. The proton differential energy spectrum has been measured directly in the region 250-750 Mev. It is observed that primary alphas and protons have the same form of rigidity spectrum from 1 Bv to 17 Bv. A series of cutoff… more

On the Existences of a Magnetic and Focusing Length in a Synchrotron

Description: Measurements of S and s values indicate that existence of two different effective lengths in the azimuthal direction. We call them equivalent magnetic length and equivalent focusing length respectively. We demonstrate that the first one is the length to be used for the calculation of the radius and the second one in the calculation of the field gradient values. The formulas for the structure of the Cambridge Electron Accelerator are derived on this basis.

Theory of the Thermal Breakaway of a Pinned Dislocation Line with Application to Damping Phenomena

Description: An investigation is made of the model of a pinned dislocation line under stress. The model used is that originally given by Koehler and later employed by Granato and Lücke in their theory of mechanical damping due to dislocations. By taking into account thermal fluctuations the probability of the thermal unpinning (breakaway) of such a dislocation line is calculated. The effect of the breakaway on the decrement and apparent modulus change felt by a stress wave traveling though a solid is also c… more
