Chemiluminescence assay for the detection of biological warfare agents

Description: A chemiluminescent homogeneous immunoassay and a hand-size multiassay reader are described that could be used for detecting biological materials. The special feature of the assay is that it employs two different antibodies that each bind to a unique epitope on the same antigen. Each group of epitope-specific antibodies has linked to it an enzyme of a proximal-enzyme pair. One enzyme of the pair utilizes a substrate in high concentration to produce a second substrate required by the second enzym… more

IGPP-LLNL 1998 annual report

Description: The Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) is a Multicampus Research Unit of the University of California (UC). IGPP was founded in 1946 at UC Los Angeles with a charter to further research in the earth and planetary sciences and related fields. The Institute now has branches at UC campuses in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Riverside, and at Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories. The University-wide IGPP has played an important role in establishing interdisciplinary… more

Report on phase 2 of task 1.1: single phase synthesis to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for contract B345772

Description: Near single phase pyrochlores and zirconolites (with Hf substituted for Zr) of the following compositions have been prepared. The results obtained are summarized in Table 1. Details of the fabrication method and the results are given: (1) Mg-doped zirconolite (Ca{sub 0.4}Gd{sub 0.6}HfMg{sub 0.3}Ti{sub 1.7}O{sub 7}), Al-doped zirconolite (Ca{sub 0.5}Gd{sub 0.5}HfAl{sub 0.5}Ti{sub 1.5}O{sub 7}), Ta-doped pyrochlore (CaGdTaTiO{sub 7}), Pu-pyrochlore (CaPuTi{sub 2}O{sub 7}), and 4M zirconolite from… more

Materials research institute annual report FY98

Description: The Materials Research Institute (MRI) is the newest of the University/LLNL Institutes and began operating in March 1997. The MRI is one of five Institutes reporting to the LLNL University Relations Program (URP), all of which have as their primary goal to facilitate university interactions at LLNL. This report covers the period from the opening of the MRI through the end of FY98 (September 30, 1998). The purpose of this report is to emphasize both the science that has been accomplished, as wel… more

Imaging the Universe in Three Dimensions: Astrophysics with Advanced Multi-Wavelength Imaging Devices

Description: This conference demonstrated the coming of age of 3-D astronomy as a standard tool, rather than as a technological niche. In particular, several integral field spectrometers are now in use, and many more are now in development for the new ground-based 6-10 meter class telescopes, and in study for space use, and are described in the papers of this conference. The astronomical roles of various forms of 3-D technologies are summarized.

Microstructure evolution in irradiated materials

Description: Study the interaction of defects produced during irradiation or deformation of a metal with the microstructure of that particular material, such as dislocations and grain boundaries. In particular we will study the interaction of dislocation with interstitial loops and stacking fault tetrahedral, and the production of displacement cascades close to dislocations and grain boundaries. The data obtained from these simulations will be used as input to diffusion models and dislocation dynamics model… more

Long-Range Neutron Detection

Description: A neutron detector designed for detecting neutron sources at distances of 50 to 100 m has been constructed and tested. This detector has a large surface area (1 m^2) to enhance detection efficiency, and it contains a collimator and shielding to achieve direction sensitivity and reduce background. An unusual feature of the detector is that it contains no added moderator, such as polyethylene, to moderate fast neutrons before they reach the 3He detector. As a result, the detector is sensitive mai… more

Acceleration amplifications in nif structures subjected to earthquake base motions

Description: NIF technical staff have questioned the possibility of obtaining acceleration amplifications (i.e. amplification of the ground acceleration values) in a structure which are significantly higher than the acceleration amplification exhibited across the period range in the input response spectrum. This note utilizes a simple example to illustrate that the acceleration amplification resulting from the dynamic response of a structural system can indeed be significantly higher than the amplifications… more

Accumulator 4-8 GHz Cooling Pickups Impedance Measurements

Description: Impedance measurements for the Accumulator 4-8 GHz cooling pickups are presented for both sum and delta modes. At the low end of the band, the impedance is approximately 4.7 {Omega} (2.3 {Omega}) in sum (difference) mode, falling to approximately 0.75 {Omega} (0.5 {Omega}) in sum (difference) mode at the high end of the band.

Procedures for Deceleration Studies

Description: The purpose of deceleration studies is to construct the deceleration ramp files that are used to decelerate antiproton beam for experiment E835. A deceleration ramp file is a set of ramp tables that are downloaded to PAUX (a part of the Pbar front end) prior to a deceleration. There is a ramp table for each device that is changed during a deceleration. These tables determine how PAUX changes each device setting during a deceleration. Appendix 1 gives a table of all ramped devices. Presently a d… more

EQ6 Calculations for Chemical Degradation of Navy Waste Packages

Description: The Monitored Geologic Repository Waste Package Operations of the Civilian Radioactive Waste Management System Management & Operating Contractor (CRWMS M&O) performed calculations to provide input for disposal of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) from the Navy (Refs. 1 and 2). The Navy SNF has been considered for disposal at the potential Yucca Mountain site. For some waste packages, the containment may breach (Ref. 3), allowing the influx of water. Water in the waste package may moderate neutrons, … more
