Development of a piston-compressor type light-gas gun for the launching of free-flight models at high velocity

Description: Report presenting testing of missiles in which temperatures are approximated and aerodynamic heating of the model is representative of that experienced by the missile in high-velocity flight. The paper describes a piston compressor type of light-gas gun, which shows good agreement between predictions of performance charts and experimental data.

Analysis of operational airline data to show the effects of airborne weather radar on the gust loads and operating practices of twin-engine short-haul transport airplanes

Description: From Introduction: "The data for operations both with and without radar installed have been analyzed and the results are presented in this paper. Although these results are of limited extent, they provide a basis for early examination of any trends in the gust loads and associated operating practices which might be attributed to the use of radar."

Uranium Recovery, Uranium Geochemistry, Thermoluminescence and Related Studies. Final Report

Description: The recovery of urantum at the mine with portable equipment was shown to be feasible, using a process which involves grinding the ore, leaching with nitric acid, extracting with tributyl phosphate and kerosene, and precipitation with ammonia gas. The system is more expensive than a stationary plant but couid be used in an emergency or in difficulty accessible locations. The distribution of uranium was studied in various geographical locations and in several different materials including limestones, granites, clays, rivers and underground water, lignites, and volcanic ash and lavas. Geochemical studies, based on thermoluminescence, including stratigraphy, age determinations of limestones, and aragonite-calcite relations in calcium csrbonate are presented along with thermoluminescence studies of lithium fluoride, alkali halides, aluminum oxides, sulfates, and other inorganic salts and minerals. Radiation damage to lithium fluoride and metamixed minerals was studied, and apparatus was developed for measuring thermoluminescence of crystals exposed to gamma radiation, scintillameters for measuring alpha particle activity in materials containing a trace of uranium, and an analytical method for determining less than 1 part per million uranium. Progress Relating to Civilian Applications During October 1957

Description: BS>The creep properties of annealed Zircaloy-2, Zircaloy3, and 15% cold- worked Zircaloy-2 at elevated temperatures were determined. The metallurgical bond formed between electropolished U and Zr cladding by hydrostatic pressing is being evaluated. Oxidation data are given for Nb and Nb alloys in dry air at various temperatures. A study of the phase relationships which occur between the delta phases of the U--Zr and U--Mo systems is nearly complete. The solid-solid reactions of some uranium nitrates and carbides at 1800 deg C are given. The creep properties of Ta at 1200 deg F in a helium atmosphere were investigated. (For preceding period see BMI-1226.) (W.L.H.)

Abnormal grain growth in M-252 and S-816 alloys

Description: Report discussing an experimental investigation was carried out on air- and vacuum-melted M-252 and S-816 alloys to find conditions of heating and hot-working which resulted in abnormal grain growth. The experiments were mainly limited to normal conditions of heating for hot-working and heat treatment and normal temperatures of solution treatment were used to allow grain growth after susceptibility to abnormal grain growth was developed by various experimental conditions. Results indicated that small reductions of essentially strain-free metal were the basic cause of such grain growth.

Investigation of the compressive strength and creep of 7075-T6 aluminum-alloy plates at elevated temperatures

Description: From Summary: "Elevated-temperature compressive-strength test results form room temperature to 600 degrees Fahrenheit and creep test results from 350 degrees Fahrenheit to 500 degrees Fahrenheit are presented for V-groove edge-supported plates of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy. The test data are compared with calculations obtained from procedures for estimating maximum strength from material stress-strain curves and creep-failure stresses from isochronous stress-strain curves. The strength and creep results from this investigation are also compared with similar results from 2024-T3 aluminum-alloy plates."

DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A 1/2-INCH TITANIUM TO STAINLESS FLANGE

Description: The gas lift pump has not been considered here as a prinme mover for circulating coolant through a primary circuit, in view of the complexity which would arise in designing such a pump to overcome the head losses associated with the secondary large volumetric flow rates. The purpose of this investigation was merely to make a preliminary study of the general character of a heavy liquid metal gas-lift, to compare its operation with that of water, and to obtain some idea of the relationship of efficiency to flow rate.
