Comparison of flutter calculations using various aerodynamic coefficients with experimental results for some rectangular cantilever wings at Mach number 1.3

Description: Report presenting a general Rayleigh analysis in order to develop four methods of flutter analysis that are applied to twelve low-aspect-ratio wings. The four methods of flutter analysis used are section coefficients for harmonically pitching and translating rectangular wings in a Rayleigh type of analysis, two-dimensional coefficients in a Rayleigh type of analysis, total coefficients for harmonically pitching and translating rectangular wings in a representative-section analysis, and two-dime… more

Description and preliminary flight investigation of an instrument for detecting subnormal acceleration during take-off

Description: Report presenting an evaluation of a prototype instrument designed to give an immediate indication of loss in airplane acceleration due to power deficiency or increased resistance at any time during take-off when the pilot has a choice of continuing or stopping. Proper functioning of the instrument requires that the attitude angle of the airplane should not vary substantially during the part of take-off of interest. The instrument was tested in three types of airplanes and was found to be satis… more

Design considerations regarding slug ruptures in the intermediate power level reactor

Description: The minimum shutdown time, to permit accessibility, for the Intermediate Power Reactor is estimated to be 38 hours. In case the reactor were shutdown following each rupture this long shutdown period would have serious disadvantages. The desirability of being able to make firm power commitments (independent of slug ruptures) has led to a study of the possibility of continuous operation following a rupture. There is evidence to indicate that, at the proposed water temperature, the rate of corrosi… more

Design Study of Small Boiling Reactors for Power and Heat Production

Description: A design study has been made of a small "Package" nuclear power plant for the production of electric power and heat in remotely located, inaccessible areas devoid of natural fuels. The design utilizes a horizontal boiling reactor as a steam generator consistent with safe and simple equipment and a minimum building height. A reactor design of 51/2 Mw capacity, with a combined net electric power output of 750 kw and a heat plant output of 4500 kw, was studied in detail. Tertative cost estimates a… more

Determination of the Elastic Constants of Airplane Tires

Description: For determination of the elastic constants of airplane tires which are required for the numerical calculations of the shimmy properties of nose and tail wheels, deformation measurements were carried out on four different tires. For this purpose, the tires were loaded in each case with a normal load and then with a lateral force, a tangential force, and a moment. Moreover, the weight and the mass moment of inertia about a vertical axis were determined for the various tires.

Dr. Johnson's Lectures to the ARC Research Group

Description: Abstract: "These notes were written from recordings of a series of lectures which Dr. Montgomery H. Johnson presented to the ARC Research Group of the University of California Radiation Laboratory, Livermore, during January, February and March of 1954. In the lectures he discussed plasma oscillations and the penetration of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields into plasmas. Dr. Johnson plainly did not attempt rigorous or exhaustive treatments of these subjects but rather contented himself for t… more

Effects of Certain Variables Upon the Reactions for Preparation, by the Dry Method, of UF4 from U3O8

Description: The effects of certain process variables on the production of uranium tetrafluoride from U3O8 on the 250 g. (uranium) scale, and smaller scales in a few cases, have been studied. It was found that the initial step (reduction of U3O8 to UO2 by hydrogen) is essentially complete in 15 minutes at 700 degree C. The rate of conversion was shown to be temperature dependent, the greatest increase in rate of conversion occurring in the vicinity of 500 degree C. In the conversion of UO2 to UF4 by hydroge… more

Electrodecontamination of Stainless Steel

Description: Abstract: "In experimental studies, decontamination factors of 1000 to 3000 were obtained by electrostripping deposited radioactivity from stainless steel surfaces, used as the anode, in 2% sulfuric acid at current densities as low as 0.01 amp/in.-2. Stainless steel cathodes were used. The method was successfully applied to contaminated equipment."

Experimental data for four full-scale conical cooling-air ejectors

Description: Report presenting an experimental investigation to determine the pumping and thrust characteristics of four full-scale conical air ejectors over a range of primary gas temperature. The spacing ratio was found to influence both ejector pumping and thrust performance. Results regarding the ejector performance and ejector-shroud wall pressure distribution are also provided.

Flight measurements of drag and base pressure of a fin-stabilized parabolic body of revolution (NACA RM-10) at different Reynolds numbers and at Mach numbers from 0.9 to 3.3

Description: From Summary: "Free-flight tests have been made to investigate the total drag and base drag at different Reynolds numbers of full-scale and half-scale models of an NACA research model designated the RM-10. The general shape of the body was a parabola of revolution of fineness ratio 12.2 with a blunt base to provide space for the rocket jet. The models were stabilized by four 60 degree sweptback fins mounted at the base of the bodies."

A General Purpose Log Counting Rate Meter Model B

Description: Abstract: This report is a brief description of a general purpose logarithmic counting rate meter developed at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory. The theory of operation and the circuit design are discussed. The use of a diode as a logarithmic element in the integrating circuit allows extremely accurate counting rate determinations over a five decade range.
