INCONEL 690 CORROSION IN WTP (WASTE TREATMENT PLANT) HLW (HIGH LEVEL WASTE) GLASS MELTS RICH IN ALUMINUM & BISMUTH & CHROMIUM OR ALUMINUM/SODIUM

Description: Metal corrosion tests were conducted with four high waste loading non-Fe-limited HLW glass compositions. The results at 1150 C (the WTP nominal melter operating temperature) show corrosion performance for all four glasses that is comparable to that of other typical borosilicate waste glasses, including HLW glass compositions that have been developed for iron-limited WTP streams. Of the four glasses tested, the Bi-limited composition shows the greatest extent of corrosion, which may be related t… more

Spectroscopic Detection of Pathogens

Description: The goal of this LDRD Research project was to provide a preliminary examination of the use of infrared spectroscopy as a tool to detect the changes in cell cultures upon activation by an infectious agent. Due to a late arrival of funding, only 5 months were available to transfer and setup equipment at UTTM,develop cell culture lines, test methods of in-situ activation and collect kinetic data from activated cells. Using attenuated total reflectance (ATR) as a sampling method, live cell cultures… more

Hanford Dose Overview Program. Comparison of AIRDOS-EPA and Hanford Site Dose Codes

Description: Radiation dose commitments for persons in the Hanford environs calculated using AIRDOS-EPA were compared with those calculated using a suite of Hanford codes: FOOD, PABLM, DACRIN, and KRONIC. Dose commitments to the population and to the maximally exposed individual (MI) based on annual releases of eight radionuclides from the N-Reactor, were calculated by these codes. Dose commitments from each pathway to the total body, lung, thyroid, and lower large intestine (LLI) are given for the populati… more

An application of robust parameter design using an alternative to Taguchi methods

Description: The factors of interest in designing a product or process can generally be classified into two categories, controllable and uncontrollable. Controllable (or control) factors represent those factors which can be regulated. Examples of control factors include: the choice of material, flow rates, processing pressures, times and temperatures. Uncontrollable (noise) factors are those that are either difficult, impossible or too expensive to control during actual production or use. Examples of noise … more

Higgs-photon associated production at hadron colliders

Description: The authors present cross sections for the reactions p{anti p} {yields} H{gamma} and pp {yields} H{gamma} arising from the subprocess q{anti q} {yields} H{gamma}. The calculation includes the complete one-loop contribution from all light quarks and is the main source of Higgs-photon associated production in hadron colliders. At Tevatron energies, the cross section is typically 0.1 fb or less, while at LHC energies it can exceed 1.0fb.

Cost Effective Machining and Inspection of Structural Ceramic Components for Advanced High Temperature Application. Final CRADA Report for CRADA Number Y-1292-0151

Description: This Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) was a mutual research and development (R and D) effort among the participants to investigate a range of advanced manufacturing technologies for two silicon nitride (Si{sub 3}N{sub 4}) ceramic materials. The general objective was to identify the most cost-effective part manufacturing processes for the ceramic materials of interest. The focus was determining the relationship between material removal rates, surface quality, and the struct… more

Water-related planning and design at energy firms

Description: Water related planning and design at energy firms are examined. By identifying production alternatives and specifying the cost of these alternatives under a variety of conditions, one gains insight into the future pattern of water use in the energy industry and the response of industry to water-related regulation. In Part II, the three principal decisions of industry that affect water allocation are reviewed: where to build plants, where to get water, and how much water to use. The cost of wate… more

Lift and drag data for 30 pusher-propeller shaft housings on an NACA 65,3-018 airfoil section

Description: Report presenting tests in the two-dimensional low-turbulence pressure tunnel to study the interference effects of various pusher-propeller shaft-housing combinations on a low-drag airfoil. Thirty different combinations were tested, variations being made in shaft size, shape, angle, and fillet.

Interference effects of longitudinal flat plates on low-drag airfoils

Description: Three airfoils were tested with an intersecting flat plate normal to the span as a preliminary study of interference effects on airfoils. Small interference effects were noted on the first two airfoils, while larger effects were noted on the NACA 66,2-422 section, which had previously been shown to be unconservative with respect to separation. Airfoils known to be conservative should be used for inboard sections subject to nacelle and fuselage interference.

Roles and Delegation of Authority (R/DA) System

Description: The processes of defining managerial roles and providing for delegation of authority are essential to any enterprise. At most large organizations, these processes are defined in policy manuals and through sets of standard operating procedures for many, if not all, business and administrative functions. Many of these staff-initiated, administrative functions require the routing of documents for approval to one or more levels of management. These employee-oriented, back office types of workflows … more

Fast reactor analytical shielding progress report for July and August 1973. 189a No. 10318, activity No. HN 04 01 01 1

Description: Analytical shielding work performed for the fast reactor program during the months of July and August included calculations for both the FFTF and the Demo plant, computer code development, analyses of TSF experiments, and a cross- section sensitivity study of a TSF experiment. Most of the FFTF studies were aimed at determining the effect of various design changes on the dose rates at the maintenance deck during reactor operation, in particular, the effects of penetrations through the radial cav… more

Continued Development of the Rotary Combustor for Refiring Pulverized Coal Boilers

Description: The Rotary Combustor is a novel concept for burning coal with low SO{sub 2} and NO{sub x} emissions. It burns crushed coal in a fluid bed where the bed is maintained in a rotating drum by centripetal force. Since this force may be varied, the combustor may be very compact, and thus be a direct replacement for a p.c. burner on existing boilers. The primary objective of this project is to demonstrate that a typical industrial boiler can be refired with the modified prototype Rotary Combustor to b… more

The calculation of satellite line structures in highly stripped plasmas

Description: This is the final report of a three-year, Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Recently developed high-resolution x-ray spectrographs have made it possible to measure satellite structures from various plasma sources with great detail. These lines are weak optically thin lines caused by the decay of dielectronic states and generally accompany the resonance lines of H-like and He-like ions. The Los Alamos atomic physics and kine… more

Growth of molten core debris pools in concrete. Progress report, March 1, 1977--November 30, 1977. [LMFBR]

Description: Experiments have been conducted using a volumetrically-heated pool with noncondensable gas injection at the boundaries to simulate the heat transfer processes taking place in molten core debris/concrete systems. Measurements of the upward, downward, and sideward heat transfer rates have been made over wide ranges of internal Rayleigh number (6.0 x 10/sup 5/ < Ra < 2.7 x 10/sup 9/), superficial gas velocity (0 < V/sub g/ < 2.5 cm/min), and pool aspect ratio (1.32 < W/L < 5.16).… more
