Vibrational Analysis of Unfired Horizontal Bayonet Tubes in a Fluidized Bed Calciner

Description: The heat exchanger of the calciner consists of a vessel into which unfired, horizontal, bayonet tubes extend in a fluidized bed. Strain measurements were taken on several of the tubes under simulated operating conditions and the associated dynamic stresses were calculated. Vibrations greater than design limitations for indefinite operation were found to exist. To restrict these vibrations and prevent further tube fatigue cracking, a tube support was installed. Since the installation of the supp… more

Time behavior of a critical reactor pulsed with a large square wave source

Description: In a previous Naval Application memorandum, a discussion was given of what happens to the power level of a reactor when an instantaneous, very large neutron source is introduced. The motivation for the problem arises from the question of what happens when a nuclear bomb is detonated near a reactor powered missile. This present memorandum looks at the same problem as that which is discussed in the previous memorandum but in slightly more detail. The results obtained are essentially the same as t… more

The Scandium-Yttrium and Scandium-Zirconium System

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "The scandium-yttrium and scandium-zirconium were studied by thermal and x-ray methods. Both systems are characterized by complete solid solubility in the low temperature hexagonal form and in the high temperature bcc form. In the Sc-Y system, there is a minimum in the solidus at 50 at. pct and 1365°C, while the solidus in the Sc-Zr system follows a nearly straight line relationship between the melting point of scandium and zirconium. There is a minimum in the … more

Description: Instrumented, temperature-controlled irradiation capsules are being operated in the vertical fuel tubes of the CP-5 test reactor. The fuel tubes were modified in order to divert reactor coolant into the tubes to cool the capsules, and the shield plugs were revised to accommodate the capsule assemblies. Fuel materials and structural materials were successfully irradinted for periods in excess of one year. A description is included of the present capsule and assembly, the method of temperature co… more

Process Development and Fabrication of PbTe Thermoelectric Elements

Description: The development and fabrication of Pb-Te pellets, contacted to Fe end caps, for use as elements in thermoelectric converters for the SNAP 10A program, is described. The method adopted consists of contacting, by hot pressing in a controlled atmosphere, 24 pellets simultaneously, using q-layer, 8-cavity graphite dies. The optimum hot pressing parameters were found to be 5000 psi at 1550 deg F for 30 min. Several thousand elements were produced by this relatively high-volume process, modifying the… more

FEASIBILITY STUDY ON THE DIFFUSION BONDING OF URANIUM

Description: Studies were made on the feasibility of effecting diffusion bonding in U, using pure Au as a catalyst, and by solid state diffusion without the use of a catalyst. It was found that the Au appeared to have promising characteristics for catalyzing the diffusion bonding reaction in joining uranium to itself. Phase diagrams are given U-Au, U--Cr, U--Co, U--Cu, U--Fe, U--Mn, and U--Ni alloys. (P.C.H.)

ORR Operations for Period April 1961 to April 1962

Description: A summary of the activities in the 4th operational year is presented for the ORR. On-stream time at 30 Mw was relatively steady with 75.4 and 83.7% representing the lowest and highest quarters. Modification of the ball-latch mechanism of the shim-rod-drives is in progress. The primary cooling system bypass control valve was modified and a d-c pony motor was added at the No. 3 primary pump. This addition was made to increase the reliability of adequate water flow for afterheat cooling. A study o… more

A STUDY OF URANIUM-FISSIUM ALLOYS CONTAINING TECHNETIUM. Addendum to Final Report--Metallurgy Program 4.1.23

Description: The equilibrium microstructures and the kinetics of gamma decomposition of uranium-fissium alloys containing technetium were studied and compared with the characteristics of similar alloys which did not contain technetium. The technetium concentration in the fissium was 12.5 wt% and the uranium-fissium alloys that were examined contained from 3 to 10 wt% fissium. The presence of technetium did not result in the presence of any new phases; it produced only minor changes in the phase relationship… more

PREPARATION OF STOICHIOMETRIC URANIUM MONOCARBIDE CYLINDERS

Description: Employing a modified arc-melting technique, homogeneous cylinders of stoichiometric UC were consistently produced. The cylinders ranged in size from 0.25-in. dia. by 1 in. long to 0.375-in. dia. by 3 in. long. The top 10% of nearly all cylinders did, however, contain shrinkage voids that could not be eliminated. UC buttons previously prepared by arc melting the elements were placed over a graphite-mold cavity, but in contact with Cu in an Aratmosphere arc furnace. When the UC charge became full… more

High-temperature sensors for Borax-V boiling fuel rods

Description: The development of sensors for measurement of temperatures to 2760 deg C in the center of UO/sub 2/-fueled, boiling fuel rods for BORAX-V is discussed. Samples of tantalumsheathed thermocouples with BeO and MgO insulation were tested to failure. Tungsten vs tungsten-26% rhenium was utilized as the thermocouple pair. The first group of thermocouples tested failed at 1650 deg C. Evaluation of 8 other thermocouples showed that the maximum temperature that they can measure accurately is approximate… more
