An Estimation of the Explosion Hazard During Reprocessing of Metallic Uranium Fuel Elements Metallurgically Bonded to Zircaloy Cladding

Description: Through the years, considerable effort has been expended in studies of the explosive reactions sometimes observed in the dissolution of uranium-zirconium alloys in nitric acid. It has been shown (1) that such reactions result from the rapid oxidation of finely dived solids released by the preferential dissolution of the metallic matrix. The explosive portion of such solids has been identifies (1) as an intermetallic compound with the approximate composition UZr2. This compound, referred to as t… more

Quarterly Report July, August, And September 1953

Description: Nine zirconium billets, jacketed with copper, were extruded into tubing at a commercial tube mill. Three billets were extruded into tubing 2" in diameter with 0.125" wall thickness, and five of the billets were extruded into tubing 2-1/8" in diameter with 0.188" wall thickness. One billet failed during extrusion because of insufficient die lubrication by the copper jacket.

Seismic Decoupling for Explosions in Spherical Cavities

Description: Abstract. A series of paired explosions in a salt mine near Winnfield, Louisiana, has been conducted to test a theory by Dr. A. L. Latter concerning seismic decoupling by underground cavities. The theory predicted a decoupling of about 100. Free-field and surface measurements from an explosion in either a 6-ft- or a 15-ft-radius spherical cavity were compared with similar measurements from a completely tamped explosion. Shot sixes were from a 10 lb up to a few tons. Surface measurements were ma… more

Intermediate Heat Exchanger and Steam Generator Final Design. Volume 1. Thermal & Mechanical Design

Description: This technical report represents the final design for a sodium to sodium intermediate heat exchanger and a sodium to water steam generator. The intermediate heat exchanger is designed for operation in a nuclear power plant using liquid sodium as the primary and secondary coolant. Since the primary fluid coming fro the reactor is radioactive, the purpose of the IHX is to transfer heat to a nonradioactive fluid which then goes to the steam generator. Because of radioactivity the unit will be encl… more

Hydration-dehydration cycling of MgO--Mg(OH)/sub 2/ for application to solar heat storage systems

Description: A method for storing heat energy by utilizing reversible chemical reactions of inorganic oxides with water is under investigation at Atomics International. The system design requires a knowledge of rates of the dehydration and hydration reactions, and, in order that these rates be significant for practical applications, it must be shown that these rates are maintained as the material is cycled repeatedly through the anhydrous and hydrated condition. For solar heat storage operating on a daily c… more

Base sequence effects on interactions of aromatic mutagens with DNA

Description: The chemical binding of bulky, mutagenic and carcinogenic polynuclear aromatic compounds to certain base-sequences in genomic DNA is known to inhibit DNA replication, and to induce mutations and cancer. In particular, sequences that contain multiple consecutive guanines appear to be hot spots of mutation. The objectives of this research are to determine how the base sequence around the mutagen-modified target bases influences the local DNA conformation and gives rise to mispairing of bases, or … more
