PWR AXIAL BURNUP PROFILE ANALYSIS

Description: The purpose of this activity is to develop a representative ''limiting'' axial burnup profile for pressurized water reactors (PWRs), which would encompass the isotopic axial variations caused by different assembly irradiation histories, and produce conservative isotopics with respect to criticality. The effect that the low burnup regions near the ends of spent fuel have on system reactivity is termed the ''end-effect''. This calculation will quantify the end-effects associated with Pressurized … more

Infrastructure certification plan for HANDI 2000 business management system

Description: Hanford Data Integration 2000 (HANDI 2000) Project will result in an integrated and comprehensive set of functional applications containing core information necessary to support the Project Hanford Management Contract. It is based on the Commercial-Off-The-Shelf product solution with commercially proven business processes. The system will reduce the number of legacy systems maintained today and absorb key systems identified that have Year 2000 issues.

Aerodynamic Performance of Several Techniques for Spike-Position Control of a Blunt-Lip Nose Inlet Having Internal Contraction; Mach Numbers of 0.63 and 1.5 to 2.0

Description: Memorandum presenting a study to determine locations of pressure sensors for controlling the spike position of a blunt-lip, axisymmetric inlet with internal contraction. The inlet performance was determined at Mach numbers of 0.63 and 1.5 to 2.0 for airflow schedules corresponding to those of a given turbojet engine over a wide range of ambient temperatures. The use of the ratio of a throat static pressure to either a local total or the spike-tip total pressure provided a signal that could set … more

The BBP Algorithm for Pi

Description: The 'Bailey-Borwein-Plouffe' (BBP) algorithm for {pi} is based on the BBP formula for {pi}, which was discovered in 1995 and published in 1996 [3]: {pi} = {summation}{sub k=0}{sup {infinity}} 1/16{sup k} (4/8k+1 - 2/8k+4 - 1/8k+5 - 1/8k+6). This formula as it stands permits {pi} to be computed fairly rapidly to any given precision (although it is not as efficient for that purpose as some other formulas that are now known [4, pg. 108-112]). But its remarkable property is that it permits one to c… more

Progress report on tube propagation testing of tank waste using the PRSST

Description: The subject of this FY 1997 progress report is tube propagation tests of actual, dried tank waste to verify the contact temperature ignition (CTI) criterion for point-source ignition in the Hanford Site waste tanks. Testing is in support of the Organic Tanks Safety Project and will help resolve safety issues with waste containing organic constitutents. In FY 1997, improvements were made to the laboratory apparatus and procedures for conducting the testing, and the final testing strategy was for… more

Landsat and the Data Continuity Mission

Description: This report discusses the U.S. Landsat Mission, which has collected remotely sensed imagery of the Earth's surface for more than 35 years. The two satellites currently in orbit are operating beyond their designed life and may fail at any time. Most Landsat data is used by federal agencies. Efforts to commercialize Landsat operations have not been successful. This report discusses issues facing Congress regarding funding for new Landsat satellites.

Department of Energy: Programs and Reorganization Proposals

Description: This report, a revision of an earlier CRS review of DOE programs, consists of an introductory discussion of the agency and its mission as a whole, and a description of its major programs as independent entities. Many of DOE's original energy-related missions have disappeared or changed radically. In addition, with the end of the Cold War, DOE's nuclear weapons-related programs, almost two-thirds of the total budget, are undergoing modification. However, regardless of the outcome of the debate o… more

Issues associated with manipulator-based waste retrieval from Hanford underground storage tanks with a preliminary review of commercial concepts

Description: Westinghouse Hanford Company (WHC) is exploring commercial methods for retrieving waste from the underground storage tanks at the Hanford site in south central Washington state. WHC needs data on commercial retrieval systems equipment in order to make programmatic decisions for waste retrieval. Full system testing of retrieval processes is to be demonstrated in phases through September 1997 in support of programs aimed to Acquire Commercial Technology for Retrieval (ACTR) and at the Hanford Tan… more

Ground Vibration Measurements at LHC Point 4

Description: Ground vibration was measured at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Point 4 during the winter shutdown in February 2012. This report contains the results, including power and coherence spectra. We plan to collect and analyze vibration data from representative collider halls to inform specifications for future linear colliders, such as ILC and CLIC. We are especially interested in vibration correlations between final focus lens locations.

Tentative method for the determination of plutonium-239 and plutonium-238 in water (by a coprecipitation anion exchange technique)

Description: A procedure for the determination of plutonium 238 and plutonium 239 in water is described. The procedure consists of a coprecipitation, an anion exchange separation and electrodeposition, followed by alpha pulse height analysis. More specifically, the sample is acidified with nitric acid and plutonium-242 is added as a tracer before any chemical separations are performed. Iron is added to the water as iron (III) and the plutonium is coprecipitated with the iron as ferric hydroxide by adding am… more

Estimation of Neutron Energy for First Resonance From Absorption Cross Section for Thermal Neutrons

Description: Examination of published data for some 52 isotopes indicates that the neutron energy for which the first resonance occurs is related to the magnitude of the thermal absorption cross section. The empirical relation obtained is in qualitative agreement with the results of a simplified version of the resonance theory of the nucleus of Breit-Wigner.

Chemical Weapons Convention: Issues for Congress

Description: The Convention provides the most extensive and intrusive verification regime of any arms control treaty, extending its coverage to not only governmental but also civilian facilities. The Convention also requires export controls and reporting requirements on chemicals that can be used as warfare agents and their precursors. The CWC establishes the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to oversee the Convention's implementation. Chemical Weapons Convention implementing legis… more
