Theory of Final State Interactions

Description: Using requirements of analyticity and the unitarity of the S-matrix we obtain the dependence of a transition amplitude on the invariant mass of two particles strongly coupled to other two particle channels. As an example, we consider the production of a Σπ state near the Y*₀ resonance assuming it is coupled to a KN state in an s 1/2 state.

Pion Resonances in π⁻-p Interactions at 4.65 Bev/c

Description: This note describes some results of the study of single pion production in π⁻-p interactions at 4.65 Bev/c, using the BNL 20" Hydrogen Bubble Chamber. It is well known that the observability of some of the particle resonances (e.g. 33 Isobar and η) varies markedly with the energy of the incident particle. Minutes of the Conference of Linear Accelerators for High Energies

Description: During the past year notable progress was made in several laboratories on design for linear accelerators in the energy range up to and above 1 Bev. Interest in linacs for this energy centers on two possible applications: first, as injectors for 300 to 1000 Bev synchrotrons, and second, as sources of intense meson beams. To review this progress, a conference jointly sponsored by the Brookhaven National Laboratory and Yale University was held at Brookhaven during the week of August 20, 1962.

The Thermal Expansion of Five Titanium Carbide Cermets from 68 to 1800F

Description: This technical report presents measurements of the thermal expansion of five titanium carbide type cermets from 68 to 1800F. These cermets are designated by Kennametal, Inc., as K 138A, K 150A, K 152B and K 162B. They contain from 64 to 80 weight percent titanium carbide, 10 to 30 weight percent metal binder and 6 to 10 weight percent other carbides. Elastic Thermal Stress in Reactor Fuel Elements -- a Comparative Study of Various Shapes

Description: A method for comparison and evaluation of thermoelastic stresses is given for a range of fuel element shapes based on parameters available from the initial study of a reactor system. The shapes studied, in descending order of stress level are circular rods, concentric tubes, flat plates, and a matrix of circular holes.

The Reprocessing of Beryllium-Base Reactor Fuels : a Chemical Feasibility Study of a Modified Thorex Process for the Recovery of the Uranium and Thorium

Description: Stable solutions of basic beryllium nitrate can be formed with beryllium concentrations up to 9M, and an NO3/Be mole ratio as low as 1:1. The efficiency of basic beryllium nitrate as an agent for salting out uranium into a tributylphosphate/kerosene solvent has been compared with that of other salts. It appears possible to separate uranium and thorium from beryllium and fission products using a modified Thorex process in which beryllium nitrate replaces aluminum nitrate.

The Ion Exchange Behaviour of Beryllium Salicylate Complexes

Description: As part of a general study of the co-ordination chemistry of beryllium, the beryllium salicylate complexes have been investigated by ion exchange procedures. The evidence indicates that a neutral 1 : 1 and an anionic 1 : 2 chelate exist in solution under appropriate conditions, and their stability constants have been determined by ion-exchange methos. The values of the stability constants were found to be [beta]1 = 4.97 x 10 (12), and [beta]2 = 2.63 x 10(22).

The Reprocessing of Homogeneous Beryllium-Base Reactor Fuel : a Suggested Scheme for the Selective Aqueous Dissolution of the Matrix

Description: The matrix of a dilute homogeneous H.T.G.C. reactor fuel employing metallic beryllium as a moderator can be selectively dissolved by a caustic soda solution containing salicylate ion. At least 99 percent of the uranium and thorium can be recovered as insoluble solids, but in the case of irradiated material the uranium loss might be higher. Production Test IP-524-AL, testing in 1706-KE single-pass tubes of Quachrom Glucosate as a replacement for dichromate

Description: The objective of the production test detailed in this report is to authorize testing in the 1706-KE single-pass facility to measure the corrosion of aluminum-clad fuel elements in process water containing 0.20 ppm of Quachrom Glucosate added in place of dichromate and to compare this corrosion to corrosion in normal process water. Evaluation of lithium as a control rod poison

Description: To permit more accurate evaluation of the incentives for isotopes producing control rods a determination was performed of the tritium production which would result from conversion to lithium HCR`s. A cursory examination of the gains resulting from the use of lithium shows that a significant amount of tritium could be produced in this manner totaling 1.6 percent of the present Pu-239 production on an atom equivalent basis.
