Peeler Extraction of a Synchrocyclotron Beam

Description: This report follows the study of a perturbation in the fringing magnetic field of a synchrocyclotron, using the computed unperturbed orbits of the modified Berkeley 184-inch synchrocyclotron, and introduces the peeler extraction to overcome limitations by using a perturbation that recedes with increasing radial amplitude.

Utilization of the Surface Tension of Liquid Metals in Making High-Vacuum Seals

Description: Abstract: "The free energy (surface tension) of a liquid film can withstand atmospheric pressure across a maximum theoretical gap of 10-(-3) cm between solids if the liquid wets and bridges the sides of the gap continuously. The eutectic alloy of Ga, lm and Sm is used for this purpose. This alloy is molten at room temperature with surface tension > 500 dynes/cm, vapor pressure < 10-(-8) cm at 500 C and excellent wetting properties. This alloy can be utilized in valves, motion seals, flanged joi… more

Process tube boilout experiments

Description: The loss of cooling water from a Hanford production reactor has serious implications because of the accompanying reactivity transient. It is imperative that the time dependence of this transient be determined in order to evaluate properly some aspects of reactor safety. A previous experiment has been done however it was primarily in the nature of an exploratory run leading to the present experiment. The experiments described below cover a much wider range of conditions and have been used as a b… more

Drilling in the Flatirons Locality, Monument Valley, Arizona

Description: From introduction: A subsurface exploration program was undertaken to investigate the concentration of uranium and vanadium in or near the base of the Shinarump member of the Chinle formation in the Flatirons locality, and to develop criteria whereby adjacent unexplored areas could be evaluated as to potential production capacity from study of geological and mineralogical features at the host rook outcrop. An earlier study of the area by C. G. Evensen of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission had s… more

An Investigation of the Application of the Gas Generator-Free Turbine Cycle to a Nuclear Powered Aircraft

Description: This study has investigated the feasibility of installing a gas generator-free turbine type power plant in the R3Y aircraft, using a circulating fuel reactor as a power source. Two variations of the cycle were considered. The split flow cycle bleeds high temperature, high pressure air from the gas generator directly to the free turbine in the wing. The through flow cycle partially expands the high temperature, high pressure air through the compressor turbine of the gas generator then directs th… more

Manufacture of the ThO$sub 2$-UO$sub 2$ Ceramic Fuel Pellets for Borax-IV

Description: Preliminary investigation indicated that it was possible to prepare thoria-urania solid solutions by sintering in air a mixture of ThO/sub 2/ and U/ sub 3/O.sub 8/. The U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ on heatin g in air was found to disassociate, and when heated with ThO/sub 2/, the resultant body was essentially a ThO/sub 2/-UO/sub 2/ solid solution. The methods used in preparing and granulating the ThO/sub 2/ and U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ for the BORAX-IV loading are discussed in detail. This material was dry presse… more

Zirconium Hazards Research. Summary Report No. 3655 for September 1, 1956 to August 31, 1957

Description: The sensitivity characteristics of a variety of Zr samples such as sponge, scrap, powder and process materials were studicd. Of particular interest was the determination of the relative seasitivity of these materials to such stimuli as impact, friction, electrostatic discharge, and heat. A study of the zirconium--water reaction at relatively low temperature was initiated. In general, scrap and sponge were relatively insensitive to impact. Only one proeess material, the distillation residue, exh… more
