ELECTRODEPOSITION OF NICKEL ON URANIUM

Description: Electrodeposited nickel coatings on uranium for protection from destructive corrosion in boiling water wns investigated. Correlation between the pretreatment of the uranium and subsequent protection by thin nickel coatings was established. Thin electrodeposited nickel coatings provide better protection when applied to a matte surface produced by blasting with an aqueous suspension of silica (100 mesh) followed by a cathodic treatment in 35 wt% sulfuric acid than when applied to the rough surfac… more

Preliminary Report on the Rimini Area, Jefferson City Quadrangle, Jefferson County and Lewis and Clark County, Montana

Description: Abstract: A number of radioactivity anomalies and secondary uranium minerals have been found in the Rimini area near the northwestern margin of the Boulder batholith. Most of the anomalies are associated with chalcedonic vein zones that consist of one or more veins of cryptocrystalline and fine-grained quartz in silicified quartz monzonite and alaskite. Seventeen of the anomalies were found along veins that contain base and precious metals; nine were along veins in the vicinity of the village o… more

Preliminary Altitude Performance Data for the J65-B3 Turbojet Engine at Reynolds Number Indices from 0.2 to 0.8

Description: "Altitude performance characteristics of the J65-B3 turbojet engine and its components were obtained at engine-inlet conditions corresponding to Reynolds number indices from 0.2 to 0.8 over a range of corrected engine speeds from 70 to 110 percent of rated speed. Engine operational limits up to an altitude of 75,000 feet together with ignition and windmilling characteristics were also obtained. The engine and component data are presented both in graphical and in tabulated form. The operational … more

METALLURGY DIVISION SEMIANNUAL PROGRESS REPORT FOR PERIOD ENDING APRIL 10, 1954

Description: Transformation kinetics studies were started on Ag - Zr alloys. Tensile properties of Th alloys with additions of 2 and 4% Ti and varving C content were determined. The production of U - Al alloys by reduction of UO/sub 2/F/sub 2/ in a cryolite slag was demonstrated. Dynamic corrosion experiments including impact tests on commercial-purity titanium samples exposed to oxygen-preseurized UO/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ periods in excess of 500 hr indicated that no change in impact behavior occurred. Similar t… more

Essential material flow sheet of precipitation separations process

Description: This report describes the direct essential material requirements for processing a standard run through the precipitation separations process in effect on August 1, 1954. Flow sheet conditions are based on a starting maximum batch size of 300 grams of product at a uranium irradiation level of 215 MWD/ton. The essential material requirements are those used to process with 2.5 grams of Bismuth per liter in Extraction, First Decontamination Cycle volumes at 56% of the September 1, 1946 standard, an… more

Decontamination of bismuth phosphate process first cycle and coating removal wastes

Description: Recent successes with the use of metal ferrocynanides, particularly nickel ferrocyanide, for the removal of cesium from Uranium Recovery Process wastes prompted an investigation into the use of this carrier for the removal of cesium from wastes produced in the coating-removal and first-decontamination-cycle steps of the Bismuth Phosphate Process. Both in-line treatment of the wastes currently produced and treatment of supernatant liquids from wastes already stored in underground tanks were cons… more

The Development of Fixed Screen Resin-In-Pulp Devices

Description: A resin-in-pulp process was developed using a series of fixed-screen or Winchester cells. Various laboratory and pilot plant models were constructed and tested under simulated plant conditions. The fixed-screen device proved very effective in the recovery of uranium and/or vanadium by a continuous, resin-in-pulp process.

The Nuclear Reactor with a Transverse Air Gap

Description: Diffusion theory and transport theory approaches to the problem of a nuclear reactor with a transverse air gap are compared. It is suggested that the differences in results for thin gaps is due to the fact that diffusion theory does not adequately represent the flux distribution in the immediate vicinity of the gap. For mathematical conveniences previous treatments of the gap problem have made use of fictitious image piles which exaggerate the neutron losses. The extent of the error is estimate… more

THEORY OF MULTIPLE COULOMB SCATTERING FROM EXTENDED NUCLEI

Description: Two independent methods are described for calculating the multiple scattering distribution for projected angle scattering resulting when very high energy charged particles traverse a thick scatterer. The single scattering law for projected angle scattering is taken to be the Rutherford scattering law for projected angle scattering modified at small angles by electron shielding and at large angles by a nuclear form factor F{sub n}({phi}/{phi}{sub o}) which gives the effect of the finite nuclear … more

Considerations for additional 321 Building mercury dissolving studies

Description: Studies in the 321 Building dissolver during December 1953 and January 1954, were successful in developing a laboratory-proved mercury-catalyzed dissolving flowsheet into a suitable plant procedure. However, this flowsheet was not adapted for Redox plant operation because of uncertainty about the possible presence of hydrogen above the lower explosive limit in the off-gases. Subsequent laboratory work has resulted in a better understanding of the hydrogen evolution, and has resulted in developi… more
