Distribution Coefficient of D₂O Between Triethylamine and Water

Description: Summary: "Water containing 1.8% D2O was distributed between the two liquid phases formed with triethylamine at 20 and 35 C. The triethylamine was removed from each phase by aseotropic distillation with benzene before analyzing the water by determining its density with a quartz float. The ratios of the concentrations of the D2O in the water layer to that in the amino layer were 1.007 and 1.004 at 20 and 35, respectfully. The differences from unity are about the same as the errors of analysis."

Polarographic Determination of Uranium in Dust Samples

Description: Abstract: "Samples of dust are collected from the atmosphere with a Mine Safety Appliance Co. electrostatic precipitator and analyzed for uranium by means of a dropping mercury electrode apparatus. Two to three micrograms of uranium can be detected in a cell solution volume of 1 ml. Iron, nickel and chromium present in shop dusts do not interfere. Copper may interfere if present in excess but may be removed by a sulfide precipitation. Directions for preparation of cell solution and operation of… more

Project 9536, metal turnings - fire hazard

Description: The turnings have proved to be highly inflammable and subject to spontaneous ignition. Several experiments have been conducted at Herring-Hall-Marvin Safe Company, Hamilton, Ohio, and Baker Brothers, Inc., Toledo, Ohio, and in addition there have been a number of accidental fires, of which at least three were spontaneous. Fires of quantities ranging from several pounds to several hundred pounds have been experienced and a number of extinguishers have been tried. Records of this work are availab… more

Fission Spectrum

Description: Measurements of the spectrum of the fission neutrons of 25 are described, in which the energy of the neutrons is determined from the ionization produced by individual hydrogen recoils. The slow neutrons producing fission are obtained by slowing down the fast neutrons from the Be-D reaction of the Stanford cyclotron. In order to distinguish between fission neutrons and the remaining fast cyclotron neutrons both the cyclotron current and the pusle amplifier are modulated. A hollow neutron contain… more

Flight Measurements of the Effect of Various Amounts of Aileron Droop on the Low-Speed Lateral-Control Characteristics of an Observation Airplane

Description: Report presenting tests of the low-speed lateral-control characteristics of an observation airplane with ailerons and spoilers in combination and with the spoilers disconnected and the ailerons used alone with various amounts of droop. The results indicated that in unstalled flight at low speeds and with flaps deflected, little or no aerodynamic benefit was derived by changing the lateral-control system from the aileron and spoiler combination to a normal aileron installation either with or wit… more

Bearing strengths of some wrought-aluminum alloys

Description: From Introduction: "Although a number of investigations of the bearing strength of aluminum alloys have been made, the problem remains one of considerable interest to the aircraft industry. For this reason it has seemed advisable to make additional tests of the commonly used aircraft alloys in an effort to establish a better basis for the selection of allowable bearing values. Current design practice does not recognize the effect of edge distance upon bearing strengths, and for this reason edge… more

Development of thermal ice-prevention equipment for the B-17F airplane

Description: Report presenting a thermal ice-prevention system for the B-17F airplane. The report includes a description of the design, an outline of the design, analysis, and a presentation and discussion of flight-test thermal data secured under non-icing conditions. The basic idea of the design was to raise the temperature of the surfaces to be protected from ice formations by subjecting the inner faces to a stream of heated air.

The Effect of Artificial Aging on the Tensile Properties of Alclad 24S-T and 24S-T Aluminum Alloy

Description: "An experimental study was made to determine the effect of artificial aging on the tensile properties of alclad 24S-T and 24S-T aluminum-alloy sheet material. The results of the tests show that certain combinations of aging time and temperature cause a marked increase in the yield strength and a small increase in the ultimate strength; these increases are accompanied by a very large decrease in elongation. A curve is presented that shows the maximum yield strengths that can be obtained by aging… more

The Effect of Mass Distribution on the Lateral Stability and Control Characteristics of an Airplane as Determined by Tests of a Model in the Free-Flight Tunnel

Description: "The effects of mass distribution on lateral stability and control characteristics of an airplane have been determined by flight tests of a model in the NACA free-flight tunnel. In the investigation, the rolling and yawing movements of inertia were increased from normal values to values up to five times normal. For each moment-of-inertia condition, combinations of dihedral and vertical-tail area representing a variety of airplane configurations were tested" (p. 1).

Description: Report presenting testing to determine the effect of xylidines on the load-carrying capacity of aircraft-engine oil in several test devices. Lubricating oil and lubricating oil with xylidines added was tested in four different testing machines. In all of the experiments, adding the xylidines made the oil a poorer lubricant in the boundary region of lubrication, where metal-to-metal contact occurs.

Experimental Investigation of Impact in Landing on Water

Description: "The extent of agreement of the theoretical impact computations with the actual phenomenon has not as yet been fully clarified. There is on the one hand a certain imperfection in the theory (simplifying assumptions made) and on the other an insufficiency in the experimental data available. The object of our present paper is to show how far test results agree with the available approximate computation methods, to investigate in greater detail the physical nature of impact on water, and to perfec… more
