Description:
Spent fuel elements from nuclear reactors are used extensively as gamma radiation sources. Such a source has been in operation since 1952 at the National Reactor Testing Station in Idaho. Three recognized monitoring techniques were used: reduction of ceric ion; calorimetry; and ion chamber methods. (W.L.H.)
