TOTAL RADIATION-INDUCED GENETIC DAMAGE IN ENTIRE GENOMES OF DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER. Technical Progress Report.

Description: Drosophila melanogaster adults are irradiated and then mated to flies containing genetic markers and/or crossover suppressors in all chromosomes. Appropriate genetic schemes are followed to obtain balanced stocks of entire treated genomes. Each chromosome of each genome is observed for visibles, lethals, detrimentals and sterility factors. Tests are made for translocations involving any combination of chromosomes. All chromosomes of each genome are examined cytologically for possible deficienci… more

Development test IP-342-AG increase of bulk outlet water temperature 105-DR

Description: The objective of this test is to determine the DR-Reactor effluent systems characteristics under 95 degrees Celsius bulk temperature operation. This proposed bulk temperature increase from 93.5 to 95 degrees represents a 33% decrease in the bulk temperature suppression below the boiling point. A major aim of this test will be to evaluate the degree of increased maintenance at this higher temperature operation. The basis and justification, test preparation and instrumentation, procedure, costs, … more

B, D, F, DR, H reactor new aluminum HCR concept: Temperature study

Description: The horizontal control rods presently installed in the older Hanford Reactors have inadequate heat transfer characteristics for present and predicted future operation of the reactors. Continued graphite stack distortion, coupled with higher graphite temperatures, has resulted in ECR failure during reactor operation, such as swelling of the outer aluminum sheaths to the extent that rod movement in the graphite channel is severely restricted. Continued graphite stack distortion will tend to furth… more

Evaluation of Buried Conduits as Personnel Shelters

Description: Supersedes ITR-1421. Twelve large-diameter buried conduit sections of various shapes were tested in the 60- to l49-psi overpressure region of Burst Priscilla to make an empirical determination of the degree of personnel protection afforded by commercially available steel and concrete conduits at depths of burial of 5, 7.5, and 10 feet below grade. Essentially, it was desired to assure that Repartment of Defense Class I, 100psi and comparable radiations, and Class II, 50-psi and comparable radia… more

A Perturbation Method for Solving the Angle Dependent Nucleon-Meson Cascade Equations

Description: A method is described for obtaining an approximate solution to the equations describing a nucleon-meson cascade by using the angular dependence of the secondary particle production kernels as a perturbation. The usefulness of the method lies in the fact that in a slab geometry the equations that must be solved numerically are essentially the same as those that are used in the straight-ahead approximation and have been solved previously. LRL 25-INCH BUBBLE CHAMBER

Description: The recently completed 25-inch hydrogen bubble chamber combines excellent picture quality with a fast operating cycle. The chamber has a unique optical system and is designed to take several pictures each Bevatron pulse, in conjunction with the Bevatron rapid beam ejection system. At present the chamber operates twice per Bevatron pulse. The general features of the chamber constructiosn are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The chamber is ten inches deep at the narrowest point. The magnet is of conventio… more

A Subcritical Plutonium-Fueled Fast Reactor Core (ZPR-III Assembly 37)

Description: A subcritical fast reactor, fueled with Pu, is described. Calculations and experimental measurements of neutron flux and gamma dose rates near the bare core face are reported, as well as the core temperature increase eaused by Pu alpha and gamma heating. (auth)

Multipurpose scintillation camera

Description: The scintillation camera is a nonscanning instrument for displaying the distribution of radioactive isotopes. It can be used, for example, to show abnormalities in the thyroid gland with I-131, the size, shape and location of kidneys with Hg-203 Neohydrin or to locate brain tumors either with Hg-203 Neohydrin or with the new positron emitting agent, Ga-68 EDTA. For many applications, the scintillation camera has higher sensitivity than conventional isotope scanners, and will produce pictures in… more

LEAKAGE OF WATER FROM GASKETED JOINTS PROPOSED FOR THE HWCTR. PART I

Description: When mockups of typical gasketed joints proposed for the HWCTR were subjected to thermal and pressure cycling that simulated reactor operating conditions, the average leakage rate was less than 0.11 lb of water per year per linear inch of gasket. The joints were exposed to deionized light water and were cycled 100 times from about 70 deg C and atmospheric pressure to 250 deg C and 1000 psig. (auth)

PRELIMINARY HAZARDS EVALUATION OF THE ISOLATED COOLANT LOOPS IN THE HWCTR

Description: The design features of two isolated coolant loops in the Heavy Water Components Test Reactor (HWCTR) and the effect of these features on reactor safety are described. It is shown that limitations on the operating conditions, backed up by properly chosen safety systems, will permit operation of the loops without adding appreciably to the reactor hazards. (auth)

TABLES OF OXYGEN PRESSURES CALCULATED FROM THE HYDROGEN-WATER SYSTEM AND FROM THE DISSOCIATION OF CUPRIC OXIDE

Description: The dissociation of various mixtures of hydrogen and water vapor and of cupric oxide was calculated over a wide range of temperatures (from 600 to 1700 deg C for the H/sub 2/--H/sub 2/O system, and from 200 to 1000 deg C for CuO). The resulting partial pressures of oxygen are presented in tabular form. (auth)

EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS OF THE SUCTION HEAD REQUIRED BY THE HALLAM PROTOTYPE FREE SURFACE SODIUM PUMP

Description: Hydraulic tests were made on the Hallam Prototype Free-Surface Sodium Pump to determine the net positive suction head (NPSH) required at various sodium flow rates. Pump performance data were also collected. The results indicate that an NPSH of 22 ft sodium is required at the design flow rate of 7200 gpm at approximates 1000 deg F, agreeing with computed values, and that the pump is designed with a safety margin of slightly over l0%.
