1. K+ Charge Exchange - Search For K+ Charge Exchange

Description: An experiment was designed utilizing a charge-exchange reaction to study the decay and interactions of the neutral K mesons produced. The experiment produced no events that could be interpreted as either the decay or interaction of neutral K mesons. The nature of the experiment and the possible explanations of this unexpected result are presented in this paper.

Abstract for the Glasgow Meeting - "International Conference on Nuclear Physics": Gamma Transitions and the Shell Model

Description: The study of the interaction of the electromagnetic field with nuclei has proved very fruitful for the elucidation of many details of nuclear structure. The γ-ray transitions observed in either absorption or emission can be divided into three classes, depending on whether the matrix elements of the transition are (1) much larger, (2) approximately equal or (3) much smaller than those expected for single proton transitions which are usually taken as a norm. In class (1) we find (a) the broad tra… more

Accident in Continuous-Dissolver Pilot Plant of Fluoride Volatility Project on May 15, 1957

Description: The so-called Fluoride Volatility Processes refer to several proposed non-aqueous methods of processing irradiated fuel elements. In each of these methods, the uranium is fluorinated to UF6 and then decontaminated by distillation. One of those methods, involving the direct fluorination of the uranium by bromine trifluoride (BTF), has been under investigation at BNL since 1950. In 1952, it was demonstrated at BNL that uranium, as UF6, could be satisfactorily decontaminated by distillation in sma… more

Accumulation of Radioactivity in Columbia River Fish in the Vicinity of the Hanford Works

Description: Abstract: The data obtained from the radioassay of fish collected in vicinity of the Hanford Works between April, 1948 and June, 1950 are presented. Most of the radioactivity in the fish resulted from the concentration of p32 in the scales, bone, and certain visceral organs. The level of activity density in the fish was influenced by size, feeding habits and metabolic rate in addition to the activity density of the water. Changes in operation of nuclear reactors have resulted in progressive inc… more

Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion Project Quarterly Progress Report For Period Ending June 10, 1955

Description: The development of the reactor layout is continuing. New features that have been incorporated because of stress, fluid flow, or fabricability considerations include an elliptical fuel expansion tank, a rounded dome to enclose the top of the reactor, a newly designed sodium pump impeller, and other related items. Recently completed heat exchanger tests yielded consistent data from which a series of heat exchangers is being designed. The most promising of these will be chosen for the ART.

An Alternate Interpretation of the Results on then p-Meson Decay Electron Spectrum

Description: We have preliminarily reported the interpretation of our experimental results that the intensity of the spectrum at the maximum energy was zero. But, as reported in the second paper UCRL-1261 we found that the results may also be fitted to a different spectrum with finite intensity at the maximum energy. Quite recently, however, the most probable value for the mass of the p-meson has been revised by two independent groups based on two different experiments.

Analysis of Broadened X-ray Diffraction Peaks

Description: This report is a manual describing the methods developed by Stokes (1) and Warren and Averbach (2) (3) for the determination of the effects of cold work by x-ray diffraction methods. Only the method of mathematical analysis is presented while the method of obtaining the necessary x-ray diffraction patterns is not mentioned. This manual will be used for an experimental study of irradiation damage to uranium.

Analysis of Bulk Shielding Facility Neutron Dosimeter Data

Description: Technical report calculating "effective removal cross sections" for Pb, Fe and O from measurements of fast neutron does in the water surrounding the BSF reactor. The values for Pb and Fe agree quite well with those previously determined from Lid tank data, whereas that for O is somewhat lower. [From Abstract]

An Aqua Recia Flowsheet for Uranium Dissolution

Description: Relatively long time cycles are required for the standard nitric acid dissolution of enriched uranium using safe batch size techniques for criticality control. Upwards of forty eight hours are required for the total dissolution of solid of I and E enriched slugs in nitric acid. The dissolution capacity may be increased by: (1) using a dissolver critically safe by virtue of its geometry or, (2)increasing the rate of uranium dissolution. Dilute agua regia -- a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric a… more

The Bevatron 9.9-Mev Proton Linear Accelerator

Description: The Bevatron requires an intense source of high energy protons. The machine should accept monoenergetic protons for a duration of approximately 500 microseconds once every 6 seconds. To satisfy the requirements of small loss due to scattering by the gas in the accelerating chamber, a 9.9-Mev linear accelerator has been built and operated.

Burst Characteristics Associated with the Slow Assembly of Fissionable Materials

Description: This technical report is a sequel to LA-596, "Efficiency for Very Slow Assembly" by K. Fuchs. Herein are given estimates of temperature rise and pressure developed as a result of active material slowly being driven supercritical. Marginal assembly rates can thus be determined for both metal and solution assemblies above which the disassembly by thermal expansion is explosive in the sense that the active material or containing vessel is ruptured.
