Polishing Methods for Metallic and Ceramic Transmission Electron Microscopy Specimens

Description: "In recent years, the increasing sophistication of transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies of materials has necessitated more exacting methods of specimen preparation. The present report describes improved equipment and techniques for electropolishing and chemically polishing a wide variety of specimens. Many of the specimens used in developing or improving the techniques to be described were irradiated with heavy ions such as nickel or vanadium to study radiation damage. The high cost of these specimens increased the need for reproducible methods of initial preparation, postirradiaton processing, and final thinning for TEM examination. A technique was also developed to salvage specimens that had previously been thinned but were unusable for various reasons. Jet polishing is, in general, the method of choice for surface polishing, sectioning, and thinning. The older beaker electropolishing method is included in this report because it is inexpensive and simple, and gives some insight into how the more recent methods were developed. 29 figures, 8 tables. Improving the Accuracy of Computed Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors

Description: This paper describes a computational method for improving the accuracy of a given eigenvalue and its associated eigenvector. The method is analogous to iterative improvement for the solution of linear systems. An iterative algorithm using working precision arithmetic is applied to increase the accuracy of the eigenpair. The only extended precision computation is the residual calculation. The method is related to inverse iteration and to Newton's method applied to the eigenvalue problem.

First Annual Workshop on Ice Storage for Cooling Applications : Argonne National Laboratory, June 4-5, 1981

Investigation of resonant signals recorded at well J-11, Nevada Test Site

Description: After the Farm event, gages measuring horizontal accelerations at the bottom of Well J-11 began resonating at about 3 to 5 hertz on each shot. This investigation of possible causes concludes that the material surrounding the well casing has fallen away, allowing the casing to move freely in horizontal directions and causing the undesirable resonance.

Mitigation of Hydrogen Sulfide Emissions in the Geysers KGRA (Staff Draft)

Description: Violations of the ambient air quality standard (AAQS) for hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are currently being experienced in The Geysers KGRA and could significantly increase in the future. Attainment and maintenance of the H2S AAQS is a potential constraint to optimum development of this resource. The availability of reliable H2S controls and the development of a validated air dispersion model are critical to alleviating this constraint. The purpose of this report is to assess the performance capabilities for state-of-the-art controls, to identify potential cost-effective alternative controls, and to identify the California Energy Commission (CEC) staffs efforts to develop a validated air dispersion model. Currently available controls (Stretford, Hydrogen Peroxide, and EIC) are capable of abating H2S emissions from a proposed facility to five lbs/hr. Alternative controls, such as condensate stripping and condensate pH control, appear to promising, cost-effective control option. The CEC staff is currently developing a validated air dispersion model for The Geysers KGRA. The CEC staff recommends investigation of retrofit control options for existing units, investigation of alternative control technologies, and dispersion analysis for optimum plant location in order to maximize the development potential of The Geysers KGRA. CARBON-14 IN SAGEBRUSH ON THE HANFORD SITE AND VICINITY

Description: The purpose of this study was to estimate the levels of {sup 14}C in sagebrush wood from plants growing on the Hanford Site and vicinity and to determine if these levels could be attributed to past and present operations at Hanford. Mature sagebrush plants were collected at one onsite and two offsite locations and analyzed for {sup 14}C. The offsite samples were collected both 60 km upwind and 26 km downwind from fuel reprocessing facilities on the Hanford Site. The results from these samples showed no statistically significant increased levels of {sup 14}C for any time period during the operation of Hanford fuel reprocessing facilities. However, samples representative of the postnuclear era showed a 30% increase in {sup 14}C content over prenuclear era (pre-1944) samples. This increase is primarily attributable to worldwide fallout resulting from atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons. An important finding of the study was the approximate fourfold increase in {sup 14}C detected in sagebrush wood collected onsite near the PUREX fuel reprocessing facility at Hanford. This result implies that sagebrush plants growing within 0.5 km of PUREX while the facility was in operation were exposed to an estimated average air concentration four times normal or about 4 pCi/m{sup 3}. This was during those times when the sagebrush was actively growing and assimilating carbon. The data indicate that sagebrush wood provides an historical record of changes in {sup 14}C assimilation and, thus, some basis for judging what to expect in the way of increased levels of {sup 14}C in vegetation following the proposed restart of PUREX operations.

Precharacterization Report for Instrumented Fuel Assembly (IFA)-527

Description: This report is a resource document covering the rationale, design, fabrication, and preirradiation characterization of instrumented fuel assembly (IFA)-527. This assembly is being irradiated in the Halden Boiling Water Reactor (HBWR) in Norway as part of the Experimental Support and Development of Single-Rod Fuel Codes Program conducted by Pacific Northwest laboratory (PNL) and sponsored by the Fuel Behavior Research Branch of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Data from this assembly will be used to better understand light water reactor (LWR) fuel behavior under normal operating conditions.

Reactor Safety Research Programs

Description: This document summarizes the work performed by Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) from January 1 through March 31, 1981, for the Division of Reactor Safety Research within the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Evaluations of nondestructive examination (NDE) techniques and instrumentation are reported; areas of investigation include demonstrating the feasibility of determining the strength of structural graphite, evaluating the feasibility of detecting and analyzing flaw growth in reactor pressure boundary systems, examining NDE reliability and probabilistic fracture mechanics, and assessing the integrity of pressurized water reactor (PWR) steam generator tubes where service-induced degradation has been indicated. Experimental data and analytical models are being provided to aid in decision-making regarding pipeto- pipe impacts following postulated breaks in high-energy fluid system piping. Core thermal models are being developed to provide better digital codes to compute the behavior of full-scale reactor systems under postulated accident conditions. Fuel assemblies and analytical support are being provided for experimental programs at other facilities. These programs include loss-ofcoolant accident (LOCA) simulation tests at the NRU reactor, Chalk River, Canada; fuel rod deformation, severe fuel damage, and postaccident coolability tests for the ESSOR reactor Super Sara Test Program, Ispra, Italy; the instrumented fuel assembly irradiation program at Halden, Norway; and experimental programs at the Power Burst Facility, Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL). These programs will provide data for computer modeling of reactor system and fuel performance during various abnormal operating conditions.

FRAPCON-2 Developmental Assessment

Description: FRAPCON-2 calculations using all mechanical and gas release options are compared with well-characterized experimental data and with calculations of generic fuel rod response by FRAPCON-1. These comparisons indicate that FRAPCON-2 is capable of analyzing the fuel rod response for the wide range of cases for which the code was designed and compares well with experimental data.

Technology, Safety and Costs of Decommissioning a Reference Low-Level Waste Burial Ground Environmental Surveillance Programs

Description: This Addendum supplements, and to some extent replaces, the preliminary description of environmental radiological surveillance programs for low-level waste burial grounds (LLWBG) used in the parent document, 11 Technology, Safety and Costs of DecolliTlissioning a Reference Low-Level Waste Burial Ground, 11 NUREG/ CR-0570. The Addendum provides additional detail and rationale for the environmental radiological surveillance programs for the two referenced sites and inventories described in NUREG/CR-0570. The rationale and performance criteria herein are expected to be useful in providing guidance for determining the acceptability of environmental surveillance programs for other inventories and other LLWBG sites. Two generic burial grounds, one located on an arid western site and the other located on a humid eastern site, are reference facilities considered in this Addendum, and as described in the parent document (NUREG/CR-0570). The two sites are assumed to have the same capacity for waste, the same radioactive waste inventory, and similar trench characteristics and operating procedures. The climate, geology, and hydrology of the two reference sites are typical of existing western and eastern sites, altnough a single population distribution was chosen for both. Each reference burial ground occupies about 70 hectares and includes 180 trenches filled with a total of 1.5 x 10{sup 6} m{sup 3} of radioactive waste. In acldition, there are 10 slit trenches containing about 1.5 x 10{sup 3} m{sup 3} of high beta-gamma activity waste. In this Addendum environmental surveillance programs are described for the several periods in the life of a LLWBG: preoperational (prior to nuclear waste receipt); operational (including interim trench closures); post-operational (after all nuclear waste is received), for both short-term {up to three years) and long-term (up to 100 years) storage and custodial care; and decommissioning (only for the special case of waste removal). FUEL PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM Thermal Conductivity of Sphere-Pac Fuel

Description: Progress in understanding the thermal conductivity of sphere-pac fuel beds has been made both at Oregon State University and Exxon Nuclear Company supported by the Fuel Performance Improvement Program (FPIP). FPIP is sponsored by the U. S. Department of Energy and is being performed by Consumers Power Company, Exxon Nuclear Company, and Pacific Northwest Laboratory. The purpose of the program is to test and demonstrate improved li9ht water reactor fuel concepts that are more resistant to failure from pellet-cladding interaction during power increases than standard pellet fuel.
